Forever’s Pool

On a night like tonight

The moon took the shape of a crescent,

Filling Forever’s Pool with a light.

Violet mist snaked on its surface,

Hinting at magic that night.

A pair of lovers sat by its shore,

Filled with deep sorrow.

Dark bags hung under their tearful eyes,

They knew there’d be no earthly tomorrow.

A long time ago

The magic of that place,

Began many years ago.

Before we were born,

In a place called Tetrago.

The people there

Wore animal hides,

And would dance within

Forever Pool’s tides.

It would grant them gifts

From time to time.

They never argued over

“What’s yours and mine.”

Peace reigned within,

They shared with one another,

But the lake’s secret spread abroad,

And its gifts to no other.

So powerful a trick

Many did admire,

And that arose human lust,

A deep, dark desire.

Neighboring tribes

Were filled with greed.

Only that lake

Could fulfill their need.

They lifted weapons,

Crying for blood.

Spear and sword clashed,

Over some lake and mud.

With luck and prayer

The battle was won,

But all the tribes died,

Tetrago, the last one.

The people who lived there

Would sit on its shore.

They’d think of their loved ones

Lost in senseless war.

They could have shared,

Allowed others to see it,

To taste its radiance

And maybe feel it.

But selfishness had

Come that day,

And not even the children

Could keep it at bay.

They needed a way

To set things right,

So they thought of something

That very night

Ask the lake,

What better thought?

It would grand their wish

Just like the elders taught.

Together they gathered,

And asked of the lake,

“A portal to our loved one’s,

Could you now make?”

It was then that the mist

Swirled up and around.

Those snakes of the mist whispered,

“To the land of the dead you are bound.”

But would they exist there

In this strange new land,

Or cease to be,

Never to hold their lover’s hand?

Or was the water lying,

Maybe speaking in fiction?

Did it really become a portal,

Could they trust a lake’s diction?

One day someone tried it,

She never came back,

So the legend began

Of lover’s making their pact.

They’d vow to love each other,

Forever and ever.

They’d dive into that pool,

And begin their endeavor.

They say a trip to a star filled world,

A beautiful land.

It’s where lovers could meet

And walk hand in hand.

Time passed,

And the story wasn’t the same

It became an escape for impossible love,

Where the dead would reign.

Some people journeyed to

Explore curiosity,

Some tried to escape

Their love’s animosity.

Years passed by,

They went and went,

Until all the tribe’s numbers

Were gone and spent.
