Interwoven Deception

Chapter 1: A Nascent Idea…

It was another peaceful sunny Saturday morning in Austin.

Reggie welcomed the morning with a bright expression that almost rivaled the sun’s, breathing in as much sunlight as she could— while her twin sister, Sam, buried herself deeper in the mass of azure blankets.

“Aw… c’mon Sammy! It’s still six— so, sunlight can still do good for your skin…”

Sam merely snorted and buried herself deeper in the azure blankets, “that has no scientific basis whatsoever…”

Reggie groaned and jumped on Sam’s bed, “oh yes it has! The sun gives us vitamin D…”

“Sunlight doesn’t give us vitamin D… it merely percolates…”

“Whatever… you’re no fun!”

Reggie stood up and threw a pillow at her sister, who caught it in time. She sighed and walked out of the room.

Finally! Sam muttered to herself, drowsing off again. She was tired— very tired… mostly because of the school works and projects. It was a Saturday and she intended to make the most of it by replenishing her lost strength…

Reggie ran down the stairs excitedly. She just absolutely loved Saturdays! Parties! Shopping! Everything heavenly happen on Saturdays! She skipped her way to the phone and called one of her guy friends.

“Hey… Kneil?”

“Who’s this?”

“Regina”

“Oh…yuh?”

“Any Soccer team parties I don’t know about?”

“Nope. Rest day?”

“…” Reggie pouted. What did they mean rest day? That’s what Sundays are for…

“Just kidding,” Kneil said, obviously sensing the disappointment Reggie felt.

“Not a good joke…”

“Hmm... Pool party later at one…”

“Again? Didn’t we have a pool party last week?”

“Wouldn’t know. Wasn’t there. Had a game.”

“Ooh… incomplete sentences! Let me try!”

“Look… that all? I have some business to attend to…”

Reggie sighed, “mm… kay bye…”

Reggie took a bath, changed her clothes and looked into the mirror. She had cerulean eyes and coppery red hair. She tossed her hair to one side of her shoulder and immediately began tackling it with her pink brush. She smiled her well-rehearsed slightly-fake grin and walked towards her twin.

“Hey,” Reggie said, prodding her sister.

“What?” came the muffled reply.

“I’m going out… wanna come?”

“No. I’m doing something later…”

“With the Intellectuals?”

“And what’s you’re problem with that? You never know— you might like them once you give them a chance…”

“Uh-huh… and I’m an only daughter…” Reggie muttered, “you sure you won’t come?”

“No.”

“Fine,” Reggie shrugged and walked out of the room.

Unable to sleep after the all the disturbances from Reggie, Sam groaned and forced herself out of bed. After freshening herself, she went to the kitchen, took a packet of chocolate milk and went to her favorite place, the study.

Taking a novel from one of the many bookshelves, she flopped down on the sofa and opened her book, her mind wandering.

Lately, life is not as fun as it used to be anymore. Somehow, everyday is so damn predictable. Lessons… student committees work, meetings, events projects…etc etc. It’s all the same. How I wish I can experience elements of surprises once in a while…

Sighing, she left her book, unread, and stood in front of the full-length mirror at one corner of the study. What she saw was what Reggie had seen, when she looked into the mirror not long ago.

With the exact same shade of cerulean eyes and coppery red hair, both of them looked so……alike.

But of course, we’re identical twins…same faces… she thought with dry humor, but different personalities…

Indeed, Sam and Reggie looked very much alike, yet different in their own way. Albeit they share the same brains, the same sporty genes, the same body, same looks— one chose to look gorgeous, while the other chose to look smart.

Being the outgoing twin, Reggie was more straightforward and active. She preferred playing sports rather than staying up in class the whole day. Also, she liked dressing herself up. Thus, her hair was usually in a ponytail (easily for her to play sports) or in any fashionable do she could think of, and she always hanged with the so called babes and jocks of campus.

As for Sam, she was more quiet, demure and soft-spoken. Loving books so much, she preferred to read and study more than being in the sun the whole day. Her fashion sense was as great as Reggie, only she rather not spend more time on her looks than on her books. Thus, she tended to stick more to the studious group. In appearance wise, she wore glasses so as to help other separate her from her sister, though she actually had no need for the glasses, and preferred to let down her long hair untied.

With their beauties, both of them attracted guys like magnet— though limited only to those guys in their own groups— yet Sam and Reggie didn’t want anything to do with them.

They have their shares of crushes and infatuation, but they end there— just crushes. Nothing more. Therefore, even at the age of eighteen, none of them had any relationship before, much to many guys’ despair.

Though sometimes they each find the other an inconvenience, both Sam and Reggie were inseparable. They were each other’s confidant, friend, buddy, parent and sister. They share everything that occurred in their life with the other and all the secrets. All the interesting stuff, cutest guys, newest fashion, best music, gossip for the day…etc. In fact, they were so close that if one was hurt in the way, the other would feel pain as well.

However, there was one thing that they couldn’t understand about each other.

How could she tolerate her group of so-called friends?

That was the only matter in which they couldn’t quite agree on. They knew a lot about the other twin’s group, sure enough, but they just had no experience on how to understand and tolerate each group. Therefore, Sam came to dislike Reggie’s too popular group and Reggie hated Sam’s too studious group.

Haiz…it hurts my brain whenever I try to look at Reggie’s friends in her perceptive. Forget it, I don’t think I wanna know how the minds of her friends work. They probably don’t even have one of those…geez… now I’m turning evil.

Just then, her cell phone rang. Sam groaned when she saw who the caller was. Reluctantly, she clicked on the connect button and put the phone to her ears.

“Samantha…”

“Yes, Ivan?” Sam said, hoping she didn’t sound too bored.

“Is the proposal for the coming up event ready? We need to let the teacher scrutinize it later.” Ivan, the student president, said, impatiently.

“Oh, yeah, it’s done. I’ll bring it with me later and let you examine it during the meeting, before we passed the proposal to the teachers.” Sam said, purposely emphasizing on the word.

“That would be great. See you later then.” Without so much of a goodbye, he hung up.

Apparently that sarcasm was lost somewhere along the way, Sam thought dryly as she put down her phone and went to her wardrobe.

Purely and utterly predictable— that’s what my life would always be…

How I wish I can exchange places with Reggie now. Even though I can’t stand her friends, it’s better than being stuck with assignments and meetings all the time… and being too serious— She thought as she put out a t-shirt and jeans. Realizing what had just entered her mind, she shook her head to clear that ridiculous thought out of her mind.

What a thought! How could that have entered my mind? I must be going crazy…no way am I going to be seen with those types of people. Absolutely no way! What a juvenile thought…

But it never occured to her that the same thought was running through her sister's mind at that very moment.
