I shivered as the sun set below the horizon. It was mid May, the end of spring, yet not quite summer. I sat down and stroked the dying campfire with a large branch, hoping to absorb what ever heat it gave off. Sighing, I turned around as everyone else appeared to be drifting off to peaceful sleep. I put my hands as close to the fire as I possibly would dare without scorching them
After a while, I heard foot steps creeping behind me. When I turned around, I saw him holding a block of wood in one hand and a blanket in the other. He asked me if I was cold, and I just stared up at my crush while nodding silently. He put the piece of wood in the fire, my eyes glued to him with every move. After the fire was blaring effectively, he sat next to me a wrapped the blanket around us both, like a cocoon made for two. Silently, we both watched the fire. The flush in my face never went away as I could feel his chest moving with every glorious breath he took.
It was about an hour before any of us spoke. He pointed to the burnt wood in the fire, and told me to look for shapes in the charcoal. Confused, I looked and saw a school of fish. The closer I looked; I saw that a shark was chasing them. I pointed it out to him and he said that he saw something else. It was like looking at the clouds on a mid summer day, when every cloud that passes by tells a different story.
The charcoaled wood collapsed, taking the school of fish with it. I stared into the fire again and saw a pasture of mushrooms. He told me that he saw children playing. I looked at him and started giggling. He just shrugged with mock offence. I couldn’t bring myself to look away from his hazel eyes, with the fire reflecting in them; it appeared as if golden orbs were protruding from his face. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
For hours, we stared at the fire, talking occasionally. There really wasn’t any need to talk; silence was all we really needed. The blazing fire and the star-filled sky were our soundings. I shivered again; he put his arms around my shoulders and drew me closer to consume his body heat. My face flushed as I couldn’t bring myself to thank him.
We continued looking at the shapes in the fire. It wasn’t until the first sign of light in the east, that I felt his breathing even out. I looked over and seen that he was sleeping. I put my head on his shoulder; and with a smile, I watched the magnificent sun rise.
