Swan Lake: A Remixx

A woman, who looked no older than 19 leaned against a pillar by herself while a crowd of people filled up the rest of the ornate dance hall. They moved in step with the music, a sweet sound that was soft, an yet seemed to fill up the hall. She stood there watching them with her bright blue eyes, and every once in a while tossed her long brown hair.

An older man left his dance partner on the floor and strode over to the woman by the pillar, smoothing back his receeding salt-and-pepper hair.

"My lady, Sidglinde, would you care to dance?" he offered.

She glared at him with her cold eyes, and bit back a harsh remark, remembering her diplomacy. Instead, she said evenly, "No thank you." and went back to staring at the other dancers in an unamused fashion.

After many offers to dance, another man came up to her; her father. He was in his late 50's, sporting many wrinkles on his aged face and a bald head.

"You should dance with someone, or show an interest in someone at least" he commented, "You will be 19 tomorrow...I won't have the rest of the court thinking there's something wrong with you. I want you to pick someone at the party tomorrow, understood?"

She sighed, "Father..."

He gave her a look that silenced her, and walked away, leaving Sieglinde feeling even more depressed and isolated. She didn't want to 'pick someone'. None of the men at court interested her in the least.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sieglinde decided to slip out when no one was looking, and made her way out into the small garden just outside. She slowly made her way past countless rows of neatly trimmed hegdes and colourful flowers to a large unkempt lake at the very back of the garden. It looked as if no one knew it existed anymore.

She carefully sat down on a wooden bench and watched a group of swans glide across the surface of the water. The clouds in the sky moved to reveal a bright, full moon. Sieglinde blinked and saw that where the swans had been, there was now a group of drenched women.

One of them made her way to land, and wrung out hte water in her hair. She was extremely pale, and had finem white-blonde hair. Her damp white dress clung to her figure. She slowly walked to Sieglinde and looked at her pleadingly with eyes that were a miture of violet and dark red.

"What...who are you...?" Sieglinde asked, losing her calm, diplomatic voice.

"Odette" The girl answered, "A woman in court, Von Rothbart, but a curse on me and these can only take human form at night, and during the day we are trapped as swans."

Sieglinde suddenly felt self-consciece under those violet eyes. She looked away hurriedly and asked, "Is there any way to break this curse?"

The girl nodded and replied, "If someone will be faithful to me forever, the curse will be broken." she grabbed Sieglinde's hand, "Please help me?"

The woman took her other hand and nodded, "Anyway I can, my little swan."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next night, it was Sieglinde's 19th birthday. She greeted everyone at the hall this night with more enthusiasm. Later, she was introduced to an elderly woman with black hair. She introduced herself as Von Rothbart, and her daughter as Odile. She recognised the name Von Rothbart, but instantly forgot what she was going to say as she saw her daughter, Odile. She had long, white-blonde hair and violet eyes, and was wearing a long, flowing white dress.

She stared at the girl, astonished. She looked exactly like Odette. Could they be the same person? Her father gave her a gentle nudge, and she introduced herself to Von Rothbart and Odile. After, he reminded her to pick a dance partner to court.

Everyone stopped and waited in silence for her to chose. Without a second thought, Sieglinde went straight to the white-haired girl.

"Care to dance?" she asked softly. The girl smiled, took her hand, and followed her onto the dancefloor, despite the shocked protests from the onlookers. The music started up, and they two girls started to dance slowly, knowing that thousands of eyes were watching them. As they danced, Sieglinde caught a glimpse of pure white in the crowd. She turned her head to get a better look, and saw a girl with white hair, dressed in all white, and was soaking wet and crying. She immeadiatly stopped dancing, confused.

The girl she was holding in her arms smirked, "Your vow to Odette is broken. She'll have to look elsewhere".

Realizing now what had happened, she pushed Odile away and ran to Odette, grabbing her hand. They ran out of the hall together, leaving everyone in a daze. They ran out into the garden, to the lake where they had met.

"I'm so sorry...I-" Sieglinde started, and stopped when she heard footsteps behind them. Von Rothbart looked down at the two girls, shaking her head.

"You can never be with her now. You broke your vow to her" the older woman mused, "And even if you hadn't, the court would have looked down on you two in shame; your father would have disowned you for choosing a woman. Its just not acceptable. Its all for the best"

Sieglinde stood up, fury written all over her face, and grabbed Odette's hand tightly. The girl nodded at her, and they ran to the lake together.

"If our love cannot exist in this world..." Sieglinde yelled, "...we will go to a world where no one will stand in our way!"

And with that, they jumped into the cold lake.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sieglinde jolted awake in her seat, knocking something over. She panted, trying to calm herself down, and looked around her. She was sitting in a movie theatre, which was now empty. She guessed that she had slept through the whole movie. Next to her was Odette, who was just waking up as well, with a large soda stain down the from of her shirt.

"Sieg! Look what you did! You got your soda all over me!" she said, pouting.

Sieglinde rubbed her temples and started to get up saying, "God, I had a wierd dream!"

Odette nodded "Me too. The movie was kinda boring so I fell asleep. But I had this dream about being a swan or something, and us jumping in a lake. Anyways, you wanna go get something to eat?"

The other girl looked at her oddly, having had the same dream. She brushed it off and said, "Sure. How about Chinese?"

"Yes! I want pork chow mein!" Odette enthused, and took Sieglinde's hand to lead her to the mall's food court.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kchan: Betcha never expected that did you? ...Okay, whatever. I'm not sure how it turned out. Please lemme know what you think. No flames!
