(It wasn't raining.)

But I was hurting anyway;

So you held me, close,

And took my pain away.

"If you asked me, I'd do anything,"

Suspended, unspoken, in the air- a feeling;

So if I asked you would you save me

If I asked you would you try,

If I begged you would you stay with me

Until the day I die;

If I asked you would you fly me

So high that I couldn't see your face,

If I asked you would you show me

The brightest stars in outer space;

If I asked you would you sing me

A song only you know;

If I asked you would you hold me

And never let me go;

If I asked you would you tell me

Exactly what love means

If I asked you would you keep

All the pieces of my dreams -

You held me; my heart heard "yes"

So I asked you, please, to stay.

You gave me back my pain;

You left. I guess that I

Heard nothing but the rain-

.. wasn't it raining.
