Hopes Fade

A little girl

Not yet five

Wonders if

Her dad’s alive

She tries to see

His sparkling eyes

She hears a noice

The image dies

Ten years pass

Her hopes do fade

Thoughts of Dad

Are far away

She has friends

And no more toys

She now knows

Some of life’s joys

Until one day

She gets a call

Her emotions reach

An impassable wall

It is her dad

On the line

But she was

Surprised to find

She didn’t want

To talk to him

She almost hung up

On a whim

Instead she spoke

Her voice unsure

He was a stranger

As it were

Ten minutes later

All was said

Life was easier

When he was dead

At the thought

She almost wept

But instead

She laid and slept

And in her dreams

She saw his face

Brighten up –

He won a race

At the finish

Line she stood

With her dad

This time for good

Until she woke

In the morn

And she found

Her heart was torn

She didn’t love him

As she knew

And there was nothing

She could do
