Chapter 1

“No!! Landon, please let‘s talk about this!!”

Kelsey lifted her arms to shield her face as her husband stalked towards her in a drunken rage. She had tried running in the past and it had always proved fruitless. He always caught her and punished her that much more. A cold, hand clamped around her wrist and swung her towards him, just as his free hand came down to deliver a sharp blow against her cheek which sent her reeling. Tears of pain and heartbreak flooded her eyes, blurring her vision as she stared into her husbands dilated, hazel blue eyes.

“I told you to mind your own business Kelsey! But no! You don’t respect me enough to listen to me!” Landon bellowed.

A Tear escaped her cheek as he shook her, “I more than respect you Landon…I love you.”

Her words came out rattled as he threw her up against the wall and glared down at her, “Then why won’t you listen to me!?”

“Landon you’re hurting me”

His hand clamped around her neck loosely but his thumb was pinching her skin against the wall.

“Then answer me!”

“I just wanted to help you…it’s those men I don’t trust not you” she whispered, fighting against tears.

Landon saw her tears and released her with a final push.

“I can handle them on my own without you, next time do as I say!” He growled before sweeping from the room.

She heard the front door slam and dropped in a heap to the floor; letting her tears come.

Kelsey had been married to Landon Spencer for 3 almost 4 years. He hadn’t always been so abusive and cold. In fact he had always been the complete opposite. He had been the man who looked down on drinking, who worked hard but knew when to stop and come home to spend time in the Jacuzzi with her or would surprise her with roses and jewelry and a night on the town whenever he got the chance. He was handsome and funny, sweet and charming. She never had to wonder why she married him. It had been a little over 7 months ago that her husband had started drinking; Right after she had miscarried their son prematurely.

He had wanted to be a father so badly, the loss had him heartbroken. In his grief, instead of mourning with her he ran from the hospital to the local tavern to drown his sorrows away. The week after she returned from the hospital was when he had hit her for the first time, had called her names, and started hanging with the wrong crowd, spending more time at the office, not coming home at nights or calling to say where he was or when he was coming home. What surprised her was through it all she still loved him as much as the day she married him. She wouldn’t stop loving him she knew. She took his words and blows gracefully, with the hope that one day she would get the old Landon back. The man who would take every free moment to hold her in his arms and tell her he loved her, who would steal kisses at traffic lights and tell her she was beautiful whenever she caught him staring at her. Drawing her knees up to her chin she closed her eyes and let herself drift back to the time before she had ever met Landon Spencer…

… She was in college at Pepperdine University, studying for her BA in Nursing. Classes for the day had just ended and she pushed herself along in the busy hallways, waving hello to some people she knew from other classes. Finally escaping the crowd she breathed a sigh of relief.

“Kelsey over here!”

Kelsey turned to find the voice and smiled widely over at her best friend Allison Baker.

“Hey!” she called back, walking backwards through the halls so she could talk to her friend still pushing through the crowd.

“Meet me at the cafeteria”

Kelsey called an agreement and turned with an ‘oof’ as she crashed into something tall and hard. She glanced up at the offending ‘object’ and turned to see a pair of soft sea blue eyes smiling down at her.

“Sorry, I didn’t see where I was going” she apologized, taking the hand he offered.

“I know you didn’t. I wondered if you were going to turn around in time” he teased her.

Her lips parted in surprise that he had known she would bump into him yet he hadn’t warned her. A man walking past called something to him and she took that minute to peruse the stranger. He was tall, she guesstimated around 6 feet or so. His hair was messily spiked, dark brown, he had beautiful, warm, sea blue eyes, his skin was tan and smooth. She thought him to be very handsome and pulled her gaze away as the other man walked away.

He turned his gaze down to her and realizing he still held her hand, released her as he perused her subtly. She was a beautiful woman; an average day Barbie. Her hair was long, wispy blonde, hanging past her shoulders, her eyes were the color of the sky on a cloudy day. Her lips weren’t too full nor too red. She was petite yet curvaceous, Tanned but not freckled from being out in the sun too much. Wearing a knee length skirt and a red halter, her hair tied loosely up in a pony tail he found her incredibly beautiful.

“I’m Colin Spencer” he told her.

She smiled, “Kelsey Moore”

He returned her smile.

“Beautiful name”

A light blush colored her cheeks, “Thank you, I don’t think I’ve ever met a Colin before”

He chuckled, “It’s not the most popular is it?”

She shook her head, “Not at all. Which is nice. It’s not weird or over used. I like it”

“Then I’ll keep it” he told her with a wink.

She laughed, “Somehow I don’t think you were planning on giving it up BEFORE meeting me”

“I wasn’t, but having a beautiful ladies approval on a name is never a bad thing”

“No I guess it isn’t.” He smiled.

He was glad she was a woman who knew she was beautiful and didn’t play games fishing for compliments, even though he’d be happy to give them to her.

Before he could formulate a reply Allison strode up to her, “You didn’t have to wait for me”

Kelsey shrugged, “I didn’t, I literally bumped into this man here, he didn’t even warn me or step out of my way”

Colin laughed, “Yes, blame the man when it was your fault you weren’t paying attention to where you were going”

Allison glanced between them. This man was incredibly handsome she had to agree and she could see why Kelsey was flirting with him.

“We were just going to go to the Cafeteria for drinks, would you like to join us?” Allison asked.

Colin nodded, “I’d love to” …

…Every day after that she would meet up somewhere with Colin Spencer. They would study together for their anatomy and physiology class, go out for lunch, drinks after school, the library. They spent all their free time together, even so they weren’t a couple. They were doing it as friends to get to know each other better. An attraction was there between them but they didn’t act on it immediately. During their time spent together they played truth or either/or. They covered topics from favorite color to preferred honeymoon spot. She learned that he was a twin, younger by 2 hours, he wanted to be a cop and when he graduated would go on to a Law Enforcement academy for training. She learned his favorite color was red, that he was more of a dog person than a cat person. His favorite car was a 1999 Dodge Hennessey Venom 650R, he wanted to eventually get married but wanted no more than 2 children; a boy and a girl. He was funny, kind, encouraging, handsome; any woman’s dream. They did everything together as close friends for a month; it was only after that time when she finally met his twin brother, Landon Spencer…

… She remembered it as easily as she remembered what she had eaten for breakfast that very morning. It was a rainy Monday afternoon. Their last classes had been cancelled and due to the weather a walk through a park eating ice cream wasn’t a possibility. Colin had invited her over to his dorm room and together they had made chocolate chip cookies and steaming mugs of Hot cocoa with white dollops of whipped cream. Taking their treats to the coffee table in front of the fire place they had pulled out a Ravensburger Puzzle to work on with “While You were Sleeping” playing in the background. Mid conversation about Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and whether or not they could or would make a cute couple in real life the door opened behind them.

Kelsey turned her head to see the intruder and gasped. If she thought Colin was handsome his brother was gorgeous. They were twins but Colin’s brother had a few differences that took her breath away. His hair was a little darker than Colin’s and where Colin’s hair stayed neatly in place, his brother’s hair was spiked, with bangs falling into his eyes, giving him a mysterious and boyish look. His eyes were more of a hazel blue than a deep sea blue like Colin’s and it was obvious he was just a little taller when Colin rose to embrace his brother. She would never forget that first time she saw him. His hair was wet and all out of place, a few wet strands hung into his eyes, his black shirt clung to his body, revealing just a taste of the definition hidden beneath the wet fabric. She slowly rose when his gaze turned to meet hers, his eyes lightened with warmth. His eyes were soft, and shone with amusement at catching her perusing him.

“Hello…?”

Realizing she hadn’t introduced herself before staring at him she blushed,

“K-Kelsey Moore”

Landon’s lips rose with a smile, “Well K-Kelsey Moore, I’m Landon Spencer”

He offered his hand and she slowly took it. His fingertips were calloused but his hands were large and otherwise soft. He held her hand a moment longer than was proper before releasing it.

“Nice to meet you K-Kelsey”

She laughed a breathy laugh, “You too”

He smiled at her and then went into the kitchen where his brother was preparing an extra hot of cocoa to warm him up as well. Kelsey’s breath escaped in a rush when he was out of sight and she slipped slowly down onto the couch. It was then she knew she was a goner…

… Kelsey lifted her head from her knees and wiped a few stray tears. She didn’t know how much time had passed since he had left the house and she had strolled, alone, down memory lane, but a key turning in the lock downstairs signaled her husband’s return. She heard footsteps around the house and then the shower water turn on. She breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn’t come into the bonus room again. Hopefully the water would help sober him up. She heard her knees crack as she rose, from being bent in one place for so long, and wearily trudged downstairs to do that night’s dishes and straighten up the house some. The water from Landon’s shower finally stopped running. Drying her hands on a dish towel she dropped it onto the counter. Pouring a cup of ice water she stopped at the bathroom to retrieve 2 Motrin from the medicine cabinet and then trudged slowly upstairs.

She sat on the bed beside her husband and held it out to him,

“Take these for your head”

He took the pills from her and quickly downed them. “Ah, thanks”

She smoothed his hair from his face and pressed a kiss to his forehead.

“You’re welcome”

She set his cup of water on the nightstand and changed into her night gown before climbing into bed beside him. Draping an arm around his stomach she rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes.

“I have to go out of town tomorrow”

Her eyes snapped open at his words, “Why?”

“The case I’m working on is going to be held at a court in Apple Valley where the victim was from”

Landon was a Criminal Lawyer and was requested for cases round the US. It was normal for him to be called away from home but it never made it easier on her; especially when she had so little warning.

“How long will you be gone?”

“A week probably” His voice was husky with sleep crowding in.

She told herself to be thankful he told her at all.

“When does your flight leave?” she asked.

“Long before you’ll be awake. I have to leave the house by 4 am.”

“Oh” she breathed. She wouldn’t even get to tell him goodbye. “Well then have a safe flight and good luck”

The only answer she received was the sound of his breathing even out. Rising up on her elbows she pressed a kiss to his unresponsive mouth.

“Goodnight Landon…I love you” she whispered.

With a sad sigh she rolled over to her side of the bed and curled into a ball, missing the time when he would never let her sleep so far from him but it was his warmth from lying in his arms that would lull her to sleep. As she drifted off to sleep a single tear, trickled down her cheek onto the pillow, that bespoke of how she felt at that moment; alone.
