Write Me a Poem
I am a poet -
good or bad, your decision.
I am asked
by the people I mention this to:
"You're a poet -
write me a poem!"
Right -
write a poem about what?
Something grand -
the Human bane or the mystery of life?
An affect -
deep-rooted love or throat-tightening fear?
Trivial perhaps -
my dreams last night or fatigue?
The response -
"No, something about me"
How I ask -
what do you want me to write of you?
Lord Byron -
he had his endless nature.
John Milton -
he had his Christ.
Homer -
he had his fallen Ilium.
And the reply -
a mediocre "I dunno, something"
Very well -
so I rumble off a few mediocre couplets.
Judgement time -
a quick laugh and a "nice, thanks"
You're welcome -
you Hamlet you.
