Stirring on the ground with a stick in my side
I open my eyes to see an eagle overhead glide
Sitting up I look around at the unfamiliar land
Gasping at the beauty around me, I stand
Surrounded by a deep wood with leaves as green as grass
And a little ways off, a lake as smooth as glass
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The grass is thick and lush
And in the air is a reverent hush
Breathing deeply, the scent is calm and sweet
And on the ground are tiny prints made by tiny feet
The birds call out a sweet tune of praise
As the lake is hit by the sun's beautiful rays
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look into the lake and see swimming koi
Who twist and dart in pleased joy
Slight ripples toss the sun's light
Catching a small sparrow in flight
A splash is heard and I turn to see
Two little eyes peeking out of the water at me
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A babbling brook fights its way with a pleasant sound
Over those rocks and around that mound
And out of the woods a fox stepped, lowering its head to drink
A colorful red coat, deep brown eyes, and two paws black as ink
Its soft tail waves in pleasure
Surrounded by beauty without measure
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A rustle of bushes and the fox was gone
Like the rest of his family, they never stayed long
The bank he stood on was now bare
As the brook continued on without a care
Continuing my quest, my hair teased by a breeze
Which reached out to play with the trees
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turing to my left, I see a beautiful creature
Whose proud stance was his most dominant feature
Blue eyes piercing, head held high
Ears held erect, held to the sky
Silver fur with black and white streaks
His calm demeanor volumes speaks
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Watching him walk, my breath held in awe
As he went in silence, nothing shifting beneath his paw
Across the brook he gracefully stepped
Even as he disappeared, his silence he kept
Into the woods he melted, of his passing he left no sign
Except for the movement of the leaves of the pine
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A knock on the door breaks my dream
And in my eye is the early morning gleam
Mumbling a response, I cover my face
And try to go back to that calming place
When I can't get it back I sit up and sigh
But it will always exist—in my minds eye
