Chapter 1: Tea for Your Thoughts?

When the Road Gets Dark

A/N: This story is yaoi/slash, or male/male so if that’s not your cup of tea, RUN AWAY NOW! This is my first original fiction story that I’m posting, and so naturally I’m a little nervous.

Chapter 1: Tea For Your Thoughts?

Breaking loose from the world of subconscious, Shawn shook himself awake just as his alarm clock was buzzing recklessly on his bedside table. Glaring at it he smacked the thing to make it shut up before it awoke his whole household.

Peeking out the window he saw the side door to his house closing, and soon after heard the sounds of his friend Evita letting herself in to the kitchen. Digging through the closet, he began to get more and more anxious. It was one of the last forensics tournaments of the season, which meant he’d get to spend the day with Eamon.

His hand hovered over the black blazer that was starting to be way too small; he could probably get away with wearing it if he didn’t do any of the buttons. But was suffering an entire day in that jacket worth looking nice? Shawn wiggled his fingers as he tried to decide, finally wimping out and going with the worn gray blazer that was too big for his small frame. Running the brush through his slightly scrappy brown hair he raced down the stairs and into the dimly lit kitchen.

Evita was sitting at the small crooked table that was nestled between the refrigerator and a window looking out at the backyard. In one of her tan hands she was swirling a bent spoon in a cup of tea she’d helped herself to making while waiting for her friend. Shawn smiled at her, taking in quickly the outfit that clearly went against the forensic team dress code, again.

“Glad you made yourself at home.” Shawn quietly joked, rushing to pour himself a thermos of tea.

“Yeah, well you certainly take long enough to get ready. What would you do if Eamon didn’t go today?” Evita said as she turned back to her tea, smirking when Shawn stopped dead in his tracks.

“He didn’t say he wasn’t going, did he?” Shawn turned around, already round eyes growing wide with worry. Evita burst out laughing as she looked at him.

“God Shawn, you’re his best friend, not me. Keep tighter tabs on your boy if you’re going to get all psycho about this.” Pushing up from the folding chair Evita grabbed Shawn by the arm and dragged both of them towards the side door.

Once out the door, both teens clutched their teas close to them as the bitter winter air hit them full blast. The sun had only just begun its journey up into the sky, creating an eerie glow on the streets as the night tried to linger. Wrapping a big fuzzy scarf around both of their faces, they struggled through the icy streets toward the school where their bus was waiting.

“We need to make friends with someone who has a car we can snatch.” Evita said as they finally reached the bus, both unable to feel their fingers or noses anymore.

“Or move far, far away from Wisconsin.” Shawn said with a laugh as they climbed up into the still fairly empty bus.

Shawn, and Evita headed straight towards Evita’s twin sister Tiz and her friend Violet who had claimed the back of the bus. Shawn sat down next to the window, getting comfortable until Evita climbed over him and wedged herself between him and the wall so that she slid him away just enough to fit beside him. Giving a triumphant cheer, she set her stuff down and smiled over at the pouting brunette, who had turned his back to her.

The pouting stopped as soon as a tall boy stepped onto the bus, his curly blond hair slightly wet. Evita waved to Eamon, who smiled as he headed back to the group. Shawn sat up a little straighter and beamed at Eamon. Noticing this, Evita leaned against the window, stretching her legs across Shawn’s lap and putting her headphones on, winking at Shawn as she did so.

Eamon sat down in the seat across from Shawn, leaning across the aisle so they were next to each other. Their faces were so close Shawn could smell Eamon's shampoo in his hair and something manly but natural about him. As they rode to the tournament, Shawn wasn’t even listening to Eamon’s rambling, all he could see was the other boy’s lips and how they seemed to naturally shine without chap stick. Catching himself at what was going on; Shawn blushed but pretended he’d been listening the whole time.

“Yeah, so I told my mom about my speech and she practically kicked me out of the house. I can’t believe I came out of such a close-minded person.” Eamon shook his head sadly, glancing at the school whose parking lot the bus had just pulled into.

“Wait, your gay marriage speech?” Shawn said suddenly as the bus jerked to a stop, realizing what his friend had been talking about. Eamon just nodded, having got himself in a sullen mood. Well, he was just going to have to cheer him up, one way or another.

A/N: Ok, reactions? Suck, stop writing all together? Did you like anything about it? I promise it does get better with time! Evita and the other girls will not actually be a part of this story, for any hardcore yaoi fans who cringe at the fact that girls even exist in male/male fics. They will only be around in the first few chapters until the plot gets going. Well, what ever your reaction, review so I know you are out there
