It was nearly noon when Daniel finally awoke. He felt refreshed, and found himself wishing that he could change into a wolf again tonight. Daniel had never felt more alive than he did last night. Even though they had lost the buck they were hunting, the chase was still very enjoyable. He quickly located his clothes and got dressed, then quietly stepped around the still sleeping Miles to go look for Mikolaj. Daniel eventually found him, still asleep and in his arms was a girl Daniel recognized to be Michelle.
"Mikolaj, wake up. Mikolaj!" Mikolaj woke with a start, and as soon as he saw Daniel he covered up Michelle with his arms.
"Do you mind, Daniel. I vas having a good dream," he glanced at Michelle, still asleep in his arms, "a very good dream." He sounded quite irritated, and his accent was a little heavier. Daniel hastily apologized and began to leave, but Mikolaj called him back. "Go find my clothes, and then we'll discuss your future. And find her some clothes as well," he added as an after thought. Daniel nodded, and went off to search for Mikolaj and Michelle's clothes.
Later that day, after Mikolaj had dressed, him and Daniel sat down by the boulder to talk about Daniel's next move.
"First, I have a couple of questions," Daniel said before they began. "Who was that white wolf? Was it Lyko?"
"Indeed it was. He's a rather large wolf, isn't he? And he leaves quite an impression as a wolf too." Daniel nodded, but Mikolaj merely shrugged. "Eh, my cousin Ziemowit is bigger. Biggest wolf I've ever seen. And he makes quite an impression too, but of a different sort."
"Really? Where is he now?" Daniel asked.
"He lives in Poland, along with most of my family," Mikolaj answered. "Anyways, enough of that," he hastily added, before Daniel could ask any more questions, "let's get on to business. Have you decided what you will do?"
"No, I'm still not sure. I would like to stay with the pack and all, but I can't just leave my friends and family behind without an explanation." Daniel sighed in frustration.
"All perfectly understandable, but the fact remains that you must decide." Daniel frowned and shook his head, clearly still unable to choose between his old home and this new one being offered to him. Mikolaj watched him, trying to think of a solution to Daniel's dilemma. "Perhaps we can give you a little time to think about it." Daniel looked up at him with curiosity. "How about you go back to the city for awhile, return to your old life. Take some time to think about what you want to do, and maybe give you the chance to come up with a story to tell your family if you decide to join us."
"I think that would be good," Daniel replied.
"Very well then, I'll just go run it by Lyko. See what he has to say about our plan. I'll be right back." And with that Mikolaj got up and walked off. Shortly after he left, Daniel was joined by Aaron.
"So, Miles tells me you two lost a buck last night. No worries, rookies rarely make a kill their first couple of times out," Aaron said as he sat down. Daniel nodded distractedly, lost in his own thoughts.
"What can you tell me about Mikolaj?" he suddenly asked. "I don't really get him. He said he wasn't turned, so that means he's a pure-born werewolf, right?"
"Somethin like that, kid," Aaron answered. "No one really knows alot about Mikolaj, not even Lyko. He's a bit of a mysterious guy from a very mysterious family. You see, Mikolaj is an Eastern European werewolf, and they're...just different from others."
"Now I'm more confused," Daniel said, completely lost by Aaron's explanation.
Aaron laughed and shook his head. "Well, the rest of us in the pack are what you might consider your average werewolf. It's all pretty standard for us, we have hightened senses, we're stronger and faster than average humans, and our change is more or less completely controlled by the moon. You find our kind primarily in Western Europe and America. Lyko is from a very old Western European family of werewolves. Most of them can control the change, and they remain rather distant from normal humans. Werewolves from Eastern Europe are different though. Nobody can really say how they're different, or why, they just are. It's said that Eastern Europe is where our kind originated from, many many centuries ago. The whole legend of the origin of werewolves is shrouded in mystery, as is that region of the world. Does that clear up things a little bit for you?" Daniel nodded a little hesitantly, confusion still evident in his expression however. "Don't worry about it, just accept the fact that you won't ever understand everything about Mikolaj, no one else completely gets him either."
The two of them sat there and talked of about more familiar things as they waited for Mikolaj to return. He eventually did show up later in the evening. He brought a large platter of food, and sat it down between the three of them so they could enjoy some dinner as they talked. Mikolaj began to eat as soon as he sat down, and Daniel watched him expectantly, practically ignoring the food. After a few moments, Mikolaj finally spoke. "Well, I have some good news. Lyko has agreed to let you return to your home to think about your decision. However, you do have a time limit to make that decision."
"How long do I have?" Daniel asked, expecting it to be only a few days.
"Until the next full moon. You must make a choice before then. After that it will be too late, since the pack will be moving on afterwards, and you'll likely never see us again." Daniel looked at him wide eyed, surprised that he'd been given so much time.
"Moving on? Why?" he asked after a few moments.
"Because that is how it is. We never stay for very long in one place, we've already been here for three months. Anyways, when do you want to go back? We can wait until morning, unless you'd prefer to go tonight," Mikolaj said.
"I can wait until morning," answered Daniel, as he finally noticed the food, and began to dig in.
"Well then, in that case I will see you tomorrow and wish you a pleasant night," Mikolaj said as he stood up to leave.
"Where are you going?" Daniel asked.
"To find Michelle. You should get some rest, it's a long walk back to the city," he responded, then walked away.
"Alright. I'll see you tomorrow then," Daniel called after him.
"Tak. Dobranoc," Mikolaj called back over his shoulder.
