Title: New World, Foreign Place

By: Abby )

Notes: This story(or poem) came out of my hand before I even fully realized what it meant. After inspection, I realize that it reveals two things that trouble me deeply. Giving you any more background would ruin it. So please, enjoy, and tell me what you think.

Jumping into a pool, ever refreshing, so cold,

Somewhere I have never been.

I floated near the surface, and I watched you swim.

So you reach for me, pulled me in,

Teaching me to breathe in this new life.

My moves become fluent, and soon I want to go deeper.

Come with me…

Come with me…

You smile and you nod; we go deeper.

The light is above us, another below.

Faster I swim. There is more I want to know!

I push on, yet we no longer move down.

You strain against me, smile, and let go.

I hold my hand out, afraid of the dark,

Unable to go either way.

But you fade, you glide, you float back to the surface.

My air is running out.

I’m lost.

And then I realize:

I never could swim in the first place.
