Gleam
There was this strange gleam in his eyes—a gleam she’d seen before, on other occasions. Only this time, it seemed to grow yet more intense, more piercing. And fascinating all the same. Fascinating enough for her to not want to avert her eyes ever again.
“What’s wrong with you?” he asked, the tone of his voice somewhere in between curious and mocking.
“I . . . nothing,” she stammered as she felt the heat rising up in her face.
“Nothing, huh?” He gave her a sly grin and pulled her closer to him, encircling her in a pair of strong arms.
Up this close, the gleam in his eyes seemed even more unreal, unearthly than before. It sent ripples of cold and hot up and down her spine, the clash of temperatures nearly enough to shatter her like glass. She could hardly suppress a shudder.
“You cold?” he asked, his words now soft.
“Maybe,” she lied and couldn’t help the sigh that escaped her lips as his bent down to touch her neck.
