Prologue: Kieren and Michael

Yin and Yang, Light and Dark. Opposites, and they never clash, yet they need each other. There is no darkness without light to make it, and there is no light without the darkness to make it bright. Shadows only exist because there is light to begin with. None of them clash. There is no grey blur where they meet, it's just light, then dark.

Healing, innocence, hope, peace, tranquillity. All these things can be associated with the light, as well as the sun, and the colours gold, white, yellow, orange. Many people feel at home in the light. Not afraid, they seek the light to give them strength and support. Many more yearn for the light than the darkness.

Yet there are many more things associated with the dark. Shadows, destruction, death, illusion, nightmares, war, blood, fear, sadness, despair, and the colours black, purple, navy, and blood red. It is the darkness that makes us fear death. It is the fear of forever being in a dense black void that is inescapable; you're trapped in it. But in the darkness of the night there is always the moon, and the stars, even if they may be covered up by clouds, they are still there.

Light and dark never clash, but they do in a child called Kieran Lucas.

If you look at his name, Kieran means 'little dark one', and he is. With black shoulder length hair, that would appear what he is, as well as the gothic style of clothes he wears. And of course the fact he doesn't talk much. After all, there is always some silence in the dark, it's what adds the mystery . . . and the fear.

But like Yin and Yang, this boy also has light. Lucas means 'light', and in his hair are white streaks amongst the black locks, and his skin is nearly white for it is so very pale. Light to counteract the darkness, to balance it out. And not only does this boy have light and dark looks, he also has light and dark powers.

Kieren can hide himself in shadows, and heal people too. Shadows, healing; light, dark. Two elements that clash, yet balance out.

However, Kieren isn't the only player in this game of light and dark. There is another boy: Michael Griffin.

Unlike Kieren, Michael has no powers of light nor dark. He is just a mere mortal, a pawn rather than a player. But he has a rather interesting ability of seeing through illusions, like the shadow magic that Kieren has.

There is more to Michael than what I have said here, but you will have to find that out for yourself as this story of dark and light continues on.

Kieren and Michael and both pawns and players in a game of dark and light. Will they come out the victors? Or will they lose everything?
