Prologue

“Dangit, I hate this freaking class…” a boy named Derek muttered. “Stupid teachers, stupid school, stupid—“

“Derek, calm down.” One of the boy’s classmates said, no bothering to turn and look at Derek. “It’s just school.”

“I’m not a freaking genius like you are, so shut up.” Derek replied, glaring at his classmate. “Just because you have a cybernetic brain doesn’t mean you can laugh at me about it, James.”

“My brain wasn’t the only thing my parents made better.” James replied, sighing. A moment later, the loudspeakers crackled to life, and the class quieted down to listen.

“Attention all residents. Arania, our self-sustaining city, is currently under assault by bums. Please do not panic. We have everything under control.” There were several loud crashing noises from the loudspeaker. “I repeat. We have everything under control! Do not panic!” whoever was talking said frantically. There was another crash, then a new voice took over. It was a girl’s voice, high pitched and evil.

“Listen up, all of you. For too long you have stayed here in this city, enjoying peaceful lives while we Bums have been left outside your perfect little city. So from now on, Arania is ours! I am Whale B., your new leader! As I speak, my Bum soldiers are bumming their way into every corner of this place! Hah!!”

“…You know what this means?” Derek asked, looking at James. The other boy smiled and raised up one of his arms. Both were organic machines, specially designed for the spellcasting that James liked.

“Oh yeah.” James said, smiling.

“Bum Hunt!!” the two said together.
