A.N. Hey this is the editted version of the short story i posted a day ago. I was reading it over and noticed that it was in dire need of some editing so I spent a little bit of time going over it. I noticed in one place that i didn't spell moving right instead i put "mobbing". It sounds like some gangster thing. Ah well it only took me an hour and a half to write so not too bad considering. I also did some major editing along the way thanks to the five reviews i had on the other one i had some ideas of what to do. I hope this version is to everyone's better liking. :-) LadyWriter
Ellabella- Woah, yea i understand what you're saying and if i was to go into what some of the people did when i was younger it would be a completely different story. :-) They thought they were mature as well, but they realized it was foolish and i was just like i'm glad i didn't do what they did. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I hope that you will continue to read all of my stories and continue to review. Thanks.
Chelce- thanks and i hope you like the editted version as well. ;-)
Wheey- Thanks and I hope this is better. I took what you said and tried to make it work throughout the story. Thanks for the constructive critisim it's always good when someone will tell you what you need to work on. I really do hope this is better thanks again. :-)
Allison- Yea i just had to get some of my jumbled thoughts out. :-) Thanks for reading and review and i hope you enjoy the newest chapter of MPP and i'll try to get another one up in a couple of days. Thanks again for reviewing.
Lilylupin7- Awesome, French horn rules! Yea, that's my band nerd side coming out, but i love it anyways. :-) I love the Meg Cabot books too, I think she is my personal favorite author. Thanks for reading the story. ;-)
Isn’t It Funny
Isn’t it funny how life turns out? It’s really humorous! Like how one minute you can believe one thing and the next your beliefs can completely change. Lex proved that to me when he turned my life around in two days! Turning my life around by bringing the past back and creating a new future, more or less…
Lex was the young man who was assigned to be my new law partner. From what I understand Lex Mathis was forced to pair with me, “The Bitch”, Melanie Langus because he was new to our firm. Everyone at my firm felt sorry for him, including myself, however “The Pretty Boy” said he could take anything I could throw at him.
I was sitting in my office lounging with my feet on the desk thinking about the upcoming trial I had, when Lex walked into my office. Lex looked at me in my high-heeled shoes thrown onto the desk and then my mini skirt dress suit I was wearing. After what seemed like forever of him slowly going over my looks he finally took in my white low-cut blouse before he reached my face. When he saw my face he stared at it for a long period of time. I had long brown hair that was pulled back and icy blue eyes. I smiled darkly at him and motioned for him to come in. “Welcome, have a seat,” I told him and watched as he stepped further into the room.
As Lex was walking into the room towards the chairs in front of my desk I looked him over. Lex Mathis was about six foot four inches, which was almost a foot taller than me. Lex had silky black hair and sexy brown eyes. He was truly a pretty boy.
“Miss?” he said emphasizing the title that symbolized that I was unmarried.
“What Pretty Boy?” I snapped back at him.
“Is this a meeting or a staring contest?” Lex asked ignoring my new nickname for him.
I sat quietly for a few moments staring at him, surprised by his bluntness. Lex had gotten up when I spaced out and had walked over to me. I blinked when I saw a hand moving back and forth in front of my face. We just gazed at each other for a few minutes before the distance closed between us, and our lips met. We kissed for a good minute or two before I regained my senses and shoved him away.
“Damn,” Lex cursed trying to kiss me again.
“Stop!” I yelled bringing my knee up into his crotch and that caused him to double over in pain.
“Bitch!” What was that for?” Lex yelled holding his family jewels.
“Glad you got my nickname down already. As to the reason I kicked you… that was because I don’t want your grimy hands touching me!” I told him shoving him away from me and standing up.
“You know I don’t believe that, Mel,” he said and straightened up before walking out of the room.
I spent the whole day wondering about everything Lex had said and done. It hit me during dinner that evening that he had called me Mel, which is something only my friends back home called me. Or if I was to be more precise my best friend, Amber Marks and her family. That made me more confused than ever and I knew that the next day I would have to get to the bottom of what was going on, and who Lex Mathis really was.
The next morning I got to the office early and prepared my plan for the day. Lex showed up with a coffee in one hand and a bagel in the other about thirty minutes after I had arrived. He walked into my office and sat down in the chair across from me like nothing had happened the day before.
“Mornin’,” he said happily.
“Really? I hadn’t noticed,” I said coldly turning on my bitch mode.
“Then maybe you should look out the huge windows behind you at the beauty of the morning,” he said casually putting his feet up on my desk.
I ignored his comment and stared at him intently. My plan was that I going to make this day a living hell for him so he would not want to be my new law partner anymore and also that I was going to get to the bottom of what happened the day before. Lex ignored my icy gaze and pulled out a stack of papers for us to go over. We spent the entire morning going over the papers and making snappy comments at each other. Finally it was lunchtime and the lunch cart was coming around. Lex jumped up to get to the food, tripped over his briefcase, and fell on the floor. Before I could stop myself I cracked up laughing at the sight he made sprawled out on the floor.
“If I had known that that was all it took to make you laugh I would have done it sooner and now I’ll be sure to do it more often,” Lex commented getting up off the ground and ignoring the food cart that he had got up to go to. I stared at him in surprise as he started to walk towards me.
“You are a jackass,” I said dryly.
“And you, my pretty, are a royal bitch, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want you,” Lex said leaning over me menacingly.
“Get away,” I muttered softly.
“No,” he said softly, before leaning down and capturing my lips.
Lex’s mouth was warm and soft against my own. A groan rose from his throat as he ran his tongue across my lips begging for entrance. I finally gave in and let him continue to ravish my mouth. Lex pulled away after kissing me breathless and leaned against my desk so I was staring right at him.
“Mel, that was wonderful, but tell me why are you fighting me so hard?” Lex asked placing his hand against my cheek.
“How do you know so much about me?” I asked in return.
Lex smiled and looked me over not answering my question. I realized that I probably knew him somehow and I tried to think of where I could know him from, but I came up with nothing. Lex leaned over me and kissed me lightly before walking to the door. “Think back, my pretty, back to when you were made a large promise,” Lex said and then walked out the door.
My thoughts went into overdrive and it took me two minutes to realize what he was talking about. I remembered that back when I was sixteen, almost eight years ago, Amber’s brother had made me a promise. This was shortly after Amber’s parent’s split up and she was going to stay with her dad while her brother went off with his mom, since his mom’s new home was closer to his new college.
FLASHBACK (Third Person)
Two teenagers sat on a porch swing, outside of a noisy house. One was crying and the other looked like they were going to cry in a minute. One reached over and wrapped their arms around the other finally letting the tears come out for them as well. A third teenager walked up and stopped when she spotted her best friend and her best friend’s brother crying on the porch.
“Amber, Lexy, what happened?” the third one asked looking at her friends.
“Mel, our parents are splitting up and Lex and I are going to have to and live with each of our parents separately! I won’t live with my brother anymore! I’ll be all alone!” Amber cried clinging tighter to her brother.
Melanie rushed up to her best friend and threw her arms around her ignoring the fact that in reality she was hugging her best friend and her secret crush. Lexington placed a protective arm around Melanie as well wanting more than anything to stay in the embrace of the people closest to him. Amber just kept crying onto Melanie and Lexington’s shoulders.
The group sat hugging for so long that Amber had cried herself to sleep in their arms. Lexington looked down at his sister and then back at Melanie, he told Melanie to wait downstairs and then he carried her sister up to her room. He laid her down on the bed and then walked downstairs to where Melanie sat swinging back and forth on the porch.
“Hey, babe,” Lexington said sitting down next to her and placing an arm casually around Melanie.
“Lexy, how did this happen? I mean I always thought your parents were the perfect couple. Always so happy together,” Melanie whispered and felt Lexington pull her into his lap so he could wrap his arms around her.
“Mel, it was out of the blue, but I’m alright with it. Amber will be too once she realizes that you will still be here for her since she’s not leaving. My mom is going to move to the town where I’m going to go to college and I would be leaving anyways. I just regret that a relationship never developed between you and I. Don’t deny that you have feelings for me, I’ve known you for twelve years and I was too afraid to say something because you are Amber’s best friend,” Lexington said running his hand through Melanie’s hair.
“You mean all this time we have been dancing around each other and you had feelings for me and never told me?” Melanie yelled out and struggled to get out of Lexington’s arms.
“Yep,” Lexington said with a smile and refused to let go of her even though she continued to struggle.
“Jackass!” Melanie screamed out and before she could say anything else Lexington had kissed her. She struggled for a minute or two before giving in to his lips. They continued kissing for a good five or ten minutes before they pulled apart. Melanie’s eyes were glazed over and she had a slight blush on her cheeks.
“You look gorgeous in the moonlight, Mel,” Lexington said running his hand up and down her face.
“I don’t want you to go now,” Melanie whispered out.
“Neither do I, but I will promise you something. I promise that when you least expect it I will come back into your life and be the only man that matters. I will win your heart even if you are married to someone else and steal you away from everything. I promise that I will treat you like royalty and be everything you ever need. Will you promise to try and wait for me?” Lexington asked brushing her hair out of her face and behind her ear.
“I’ll try, but if you wait too long I don’t know if I’ll remember you,” Melanie had whispered and was surprised when Lexington had given a short laugh and cut her off with another kiss.
End Flashback (Back to First Person)
I sat behind my desk with a happy and confused look on my face. I remembered how much his words had meant to me back then. I remember why I had forgotten his words as well, when I had entered college and Lexington hadn’t come back I had thought that he was just indulging the fantasies of a little girl with a crush. Amber’s brother was named Lexington Marks, but his mother’s maiden name was Mathis. I guess that Lexington had decided to quit going by Lexington or Lexy in college and just started going by Lex.
I jumped up from my desk and ran down the hallway to Lex’s office. I threw open the door to find him sitting at his desk reading over reports. I rushed over to him, shoved the papers out of his hands and crushed his lips against mine. Lex smiled into the kiss and pulled me down on his lap continuing to kiss me.
“Lex, when were you going to tell me?” I asked when we pulled back for air.
“I figured you would remember. I didn’t figure you could get over your crush on me that easily,” Lex said smiling and running his right hand up and down my back.
“I figured you were just trying to make me feel better, back then,” I replied.
“No, my pretty. I wanted you back then but you and I weren’t ready for that kind of relationship. I did keep my promise though and came back when you least expect it and I will weasel my way into being the only man that matters to you,” Lex said, stroking my face.
“I think you always were,” I replied bring his face to mine for another kiss.
Isn’t it funny how things turn out? How one moment you can think one thing and the next discover something completely different? It’s been eight years since Lex and I met up again. Lex and I got married after dating for a year and we now have two beautiful children Alyssa and Grey. They are my pride and joy and I’m sure Lex would tell you the same. Lex and I started our own Law firm together and it has been running smoothly since it opened four years ago. Life is a funny thing and I’m definitely happy about how mine turned out.
THE END!
