>O CHILD OF THE SUN >O

Akhenaton
Meant, “Child of the Sun”
The pharaoh, the king
The Blessed One
He ruled eighteen years
With his new ideas
Among them, monotheism
Unheard of in Egypt.

He taught his world
To worship one god
The Sun God
Aton Ra.
Enmity grew
Between old and new
Those loyal to
The polytheistic view
Weren’t awed.

Akhenaton
Had a son
Tutankhamen.
At Akhenaton’s death
A boy king left to rule
Surrounded by sorrow and scandal
His kingship abrupt
His advisors corrupt
And unable to turn
His head
Without turning his torso, too.

So maybe he
Never saw it coming.
Too young to understand
His father’s legacy
That foreshadowed his fate.
Too young to understand
The hate
And not able to turn
And see it.

The pharaoh, the king
The Blessed One -
Who wasn’t sleeping?
Who wasn’t weeping?
When the child of the Child of the Sun
Was murdered?
