A/N: Thanks for the threatening emails to get me to finish this! Lol So obviously this is the longest chapter, 10 pages on my processor, enjoy!
The Final Goodbye
Why do I keep finding myself in a position that only gets me in trouble? As I sit on the couch of my grandmother’s home drinking a Pepsi, I ask myself questions that cannot be answered. Jeremy allowed Jake to borrow some of his clothes while he went into the kitchen to make something to eat. Jake returned and sat down next to me.
“So…what’s next?” he asked.
I shrugged, not looking at him, fearing that Jeremy would think something and cause a scene just like the one he caused in the car earlier that night.
“Is everything okay with you and your brother, I mean he did pull a gun on us in the car.” He chuckled.
“I don’t know.” I mumbled. And I didn’t know, so I wasn’t lying to him. I had no idea if things with Jeremy and I were alright at the moment.
Jake sighed and grabbed a Pepsi off the table for himself, just as Jeremy entered the room with a tray of ham sandwiches and Doritos. “This was all that was in the fridge, guess the old lady didn’t get a chance to shop before she croaked huh Lisa?” he laughed.
I looked up giving him an evil glare, “That’s not funny Jeremy.”
“Have a sense of humor…you haven’t had one in a while.” He answered.
Jake took a sandwich and bit into it slowly, staring at Jeremy. “Hey, thanks for letting me borrow your clothes.” He said with a full mouth.
Jeremy nodded, “Not a problem, you can keep those too.”
Jake smiled faintly; I then took a sandwich for myself along with some chips. “Aren’t you going to eat Jeremy?”
He shook his head, “Not really hungry.” He said as he stared at me.
I stared back at him, chewing slowly on my food. I looked to Jake who was already on his second sandwich. I took another sip of Pepsi letting it wash down the food. “Jake where do you plan on going, I mean now that we’re out of that place and all?”
He cleared his throat and looked to me; Jeremy’s eyes were fixed on Jake. “I don’t really know…”
“Bull shit, you know you can stay here.” Jeremy interrupted.
I looked at him as did Jake. “What do you mean?” Jake asked.
“It means what it means dumb ass; you can stay here with us. It’ll be like a little family or somethin’.” Jeremy answered.
“Jeremy I don’t think-“ I started.
“Shut up Lisa, that’s exactly your problem, you don’t think.” He snapped at me.
I was shocked as to how he’d been acting since we escaped from the hospital. I eyed him as he kept his eyes on Jake.
“Hey…look I want you to tell me the truth, got it?” he asked.
Jake nodded slowly.
“Do you think my sister’s pretty?” he asked.
Jake looked to me then back to Jeremy, “Yeah…I umm…I think she’s beautiful.”
Jeremy looked at me and smiled. “Yeah, she’s beautiful…do you want to kiss her?”
“Well umm…” Jake hesitated.
Jeremy laughed, “Don’t struggle dude, I know you want to.”
“Well yeah…” Jake answered confusingly.
“Jeremy, stop this.” I pleaded.
He only held up a hand at me, continuing his conversation with Jake. “Have you kissed her already?” he asked.
“Jeremy!” I shouted.
“What?” he asked.
“Stop it, where is this all coming from?” I asked.
“Just answer the fucking question!” he shouted to Jake.
“Yeah, I kissed her.” He answered quickly.
“You want to fuck her?” Jeremy asked.
“That’s it.” I stood up walking in front of Jeremy and slapped him across his face. Without hesitation he slapped me back and I fell to the floor. Jake stood to walk over to me but Jeremy pulled that gun on him again. “You fucking touch her; I’ll blow your brains out.”
Jake slowly sat back down as I looked on from the floor. “What’s gotten into you!” I screamed.
He looked down at me, lowering the gun. “You’ve gotten into me Lisa, everything about you. I told you before we started messing with each other how I felt about you. I wanted you, and I got you, when you do these things with these other guys you drive me crazy; I don’t want to fucking share you!” he screamed.
“You and your brother have been messing around?” Jake asked.
“You shut up; it has nothing to do with you.” Jeremy snapped at him, he looked back to me. “Lisa…we could have had a baby together.”
“No, Jeremy remember, we don’t know if it was yours or Nicks.” I pleaded.
“It was mine!” he snapped, “I know it was mine.”
“Why are you acting like this?” I asked him.
“It’s your fault, you made me this way.” He laughed.
Jake watched in astonishment as Jeremy and I just lashed out, letting out our secrets from the past. “Jeremy, I don’t understand…”
“Lisa, I want us to be together, and if you don’t want that and you’d rather be with…him,” he said pointing to Jake. “then tell me right now so I can just die.” He pointed the gun to his head staring me down.
“I don’t want you to kill yourself!” I screamed. “That’s what you’re doing to me? Making me choose between you and him?”
He nodded, “Yeah, now tell me who you want.”
“Jeremy I want you, I’ve always wanted you.” Didn’t I, or was I just saying this because he had a gun to his head.
“This is fucking sick.” Jake started, but before he could take another breath, Jeremy fired the gun to Jake’s chest, causing him to slump over the couch.
My eyes grew wide just staring blankly at Jake, who wasn’t moving at all. Jeremy rushed to me sitting on the floor, kissing me all over my face. “He talked too much; he was trying to get in the way.”
I ignored Jeremy’s words and his kisses, continuing to stare at Jake, as Jeremy pulled back to look at me, I looked at him, eyes still widened.
“I love you.” He whispered, caressing my cheek.
My mouth was open but I couldn’t talk, my eyes fluttered as I struggled to find my voice. “I…I…love…y…you too.” I managed to say.
He pulled me close once more clutching me as if I was going to disappear or something, I swear at that moment that my heart had stopped. I looked up at him and he was crying, the next thing I know he’s pushing me away.
“Fuck, what the fuck did I just do?” he whispered.
Tears streamed down my face as well, I hugged my knees as Jeremy got up to pace the room. I tried not to look at Jakes dead body on the couch, but I couldn’t help but stare.
“I killed two people…I’m still a kid.” He said.
“Jeremy, your 18, your considered an adult now.” I told him.
He shook his head, “That shouldn’t matter…what the fuck are we going to do?”
“‘We’”? I asked, “What the hell do you mean ‘we’, you’re the one that shot Eric, you’re the one that shot Jake.”
I realized I should have kept my mouth shut when he gave me a sharp look, for fear that he would slap me again. “I’m sorry…” I said.
“Lisa what the hell has happened to our lives?” he asked.
I shook my head slowly, “I don’t know, this is all my fault…everything I’ve done these past few months has just gotten out of control. People are dead because of me; Nick’s dead, Eric’s dead, Jake’s dead…” my voice trailed off as I cried harder.
Jeremy came to my side and held me close.
“Mom and dad are dead,” I continued, “grams is dead too.”
“Grams didn’t die because of you Lisa, she died of natural causes.” Jeremy told me.
Everything I had before all of this chaos was perfect, now I’ve lost everything and everyone I’ve ever loved. There was no way I was going to get it back, I’d never see my loved ones faces again, I’d never feel Nick’s lips touching mine. If only I’d never…if only I’d never…fucked around with Jeremy.
I pushed Jeremy off of me standing on my feet; he stood as well looking at me with shock. “What’s your problem?” he asked.
“This whole thing is your fault!” I screamed, “If you had never told me about your sick incest feelings for me, mom and dad would still be here, Nick would be here and none of this crazy shit would have ever happened!” my voice carried over the house louder and louder, it made Jeremy nervous as he shushed me quickly.
“Keep your voice down, and this isn’t my fault, you didn’t have to act on those feelings.” He told me.
“You forced me!” I screamed.
“That’s like saying I raped you, and you know damn well I didn’t do that!” he yelled back.
“I just wish you’d never told me how you felt, we would still have our parents, and I would still have my boyfriend, and I would be perfect again!” I yelled.
“No one is perfect, and you know that. Besides you weren’t a little saint you know.” He said.
“I never should have let you talk me into loving you.” I whispered.
“What? I talked you into it?” he asked, “Lisa, I didn’t make you love me. I just told you how I felt and you acted on it. I kissed you, you kissed me back.”
I shook my head, not wanting to believe what he was saying, even though I knew it was true. “I’m just sorry that you were dragged into all of this too.” I told him.
“What better of a person to go through it with?” he asked. He walked over to Jakes dead body, rubbing his head. “I just don’t know what I’m going to do about this…this isn’t the first one I did this to.”
I nodded, wiping my eyes. “I feel like we’re Bonnie and Clyde or something, you kill ‘em I hide ‘em.” I slightly laughed.
Jeremy nodded, “I think that I’m going to get caught.” He sighed.
I knew Jeremy was going to get caught, and that really bothered me. As we sat there for another five minutes I heard police sirens in the distance. Jeremy looked at me as I looked at him.
“There’s no need in running.” He said. “One of the neighbors must have called the cops when they heard the gun shot.” He added.
I nodded, beginning to cry again. I ran into his arms as he held me tight, he’s the only one that stuck by me through all this crazy shit. He’s the one that really truly loved me.
We shared a long passionate kiss with each other as the sirens were closer and a loud banging was at the door.
I slowly walked over to it, as Jeremy stood behind me. I opened the door to see two cops standing there. They walked in without me saying anything; they looked at Jeremy then at Jakes lifeless body.
“My name is Officer Carter, and this is Officer Pernile; are you two Jeremy and Lisa Armstrong?” he asked.
“Yeah…” Jeremy said quietly.
“There have been reports that you two have had quite a journey these past few months.” Officer Carter stated.
“One body has been found, and witnesses say they saw you, Jeremy, shoot that person. They found him in an alley way downtown.” Said officer Pernile.
“Yeah…that was self defense.” Jeremy added.
“We know, there was a witness that stated that as well.” Said Officer Carter.
What? Jeremy didn’t shoot him in self defense. I looked on in confusion, trying to figure out where this whole thing was going.
“And Lisa…you escaped from a mental hospital?” Officer Carter asked.
I nodded, “Yes…I didn’t belong there.”
“We aren’t ones to judge that, so don’t think we’re here to take you back because we aren’t.” he said.
I nodded and watched as Jeremy looked just as confused as I did.
“Says here that you weren’t alone, you had a companion, by the name of Jake Lerner.” He added, “Where are his whereabouts?”
I pointed to the body towards the couch, “There he is.”
The officers looked to him and sighed, “Why is he dead?”
“Because-“ I started.
“Self defense!” Jeremy interrupted. “When we got him here he got real violent with us, we didn’t know what he was going to do. He had this gun on him and pulled it out, took me 5 minutes to get it away from him, so I had to get him.”
The officers wrote it down then looked at me. “Is that what happened?”
I nodded quickly, “Yeah, that’s exactly what happened.”
“Get some more units out here, we’ll need to examine this body, get court dates set and what not.” Officer Carter told Officer Pernile.
Pernile walked outside and got on his walkie talkie quickly.
I walked over to Jeremy, letting him put his arm around me.
“Alright, we don’t want to scare either of you, but; we’re going to have to have you both come to court to testify. If the courts find you guilty you’ll both go to juvenile hall, but Jeremy will be headed towards real prison since he’s now 18.” He told us.
I sighed, feeling nervous as hell.
“So,” he continued, “that means that we’ll set a court date, there’ll be a trial, we aren’t sure how long it will last, but if the court and jury finds you not guilty, the two of you will be free to go, otherwise, I’m sorry.” He finished.
Jeremy looked at me, “Why would Lisa have to go?”
“Well there’s no guarantee that Lisa would have to go, but if the court finds her guilty of a charge, then she will.” He said.
4 Months Later
We’ve been in and out of court for four months now. Today the jury has reached a verdict; they’ve heard my story, Jeremy’s story, our story. Witnesses were called and heard, people I had forgotten about, people I never knew but knew my story.
Steven, the doctor, he was called. Anthony, my bank teller fling was called, Nancy…the maid and living version of my grandmother was called. Nicks Parents were also up there when the trial first began.
Jeremy and I sat next to each other hand in hand as we stood for the judge and jury returning with our fate in their hands.
“You may be seated.” The judge stated.
The room sat down, but Jeremy and I felt like we were the only ones there.
“Jeremy and Lisa please stand.” The judge said.
We stood up, gripping our hold on each other tighter.
“First Lisa Armstrong…Lisa, you have been found…not guilty of any charges against you.” He stated.
My heart dropped, Jeremy and I immediately hugged each other tightly as their were quiet cheers in the room.
“Order! Order!” the Judge called. “Jeremy Armstrong… your sentence.”
I held tight to Jeremy’s hand, as he gripped mine even tighter.
“Jeremy, you have been found …guilty of one charge against you.” The judge stated.
Tears filled my eyes as I stared blankly ahead.
“You’ve been found guilty of drug possession; the test came back from the lab after they looked over the finger prints on the gun. We had a surprise and private witness come in at the last minute confirming your story.” He said.
Jeremy and I looked at each other, who in the world could that have been?
“Therefore, I’m only sentencing you to three months in prison, in which you may be allowed parole earlier than that. Court is adjourned please take Mr. Armstrong into your custody.” The judge banged his gavel and everyone was on their way.
The police came up behind Jeremy to take him away. “Can I just have a moment with my sister please?” he asked.
They nodded and stepped back a little; Jeremy took my hands in his and looked into my teary eyes. “So I guess I’ll be gone for about three months.” He smiled.
I nodded, “Yeah…that’s so much better than what I thought.”
“I know…promise you’ll visit every weekend?” he asked.
“Of course I will, I’ll bring you food.” I laughed.
He smiled and wiped a tear from my cheek. “I love you Lisa.”
“I love you too.” I whispered, “Jeremy…where are we supposed to go when you get out?”
“Lisa…we honestly don’t have much of a choice we can either go home which was once a happy one or we go back to grams’ old place.” He said.
I sighed looking up at the ceiling. “Alright… we can…I don’t know.”
“Excuse me,” an officer interrupted. “It’s time now, we can’t wait any longer.”
They handcuffed Jeremy, I watched in terror, even though we would be together in a short three months it was still going to feel like a life time. Once more Jeremy mouthed the words “I love you” to me, I blew him a kiss as more tears escaped from my eyes.
A social worker came over to talk to me, they said that since my 18th birthday was coming up real soon I was allowed to be on my own, they just wanted to know where I would be; I told them I would be staying at my grandmothers old place.
Two months later I awaited the day that Jeremy would be released from prison. While I was on my way out the door of my new home, I ran into some people I never thought I would see again, Nick’s parents.
“Lisa…” his mother called.
I turned to her with a faint smile; she smiled at me as well as her husband. They both embraced me into a long hug. She sniffled and pulled away to look at me.
“Sweetie it’s been such a long time, and we are dearly sorry about your parents; and your brother.” She added.
I nodded, “Thank you…I am…so sorry that I didn’t go to Nick’s funeral, I just couldn’t go, it was hurting to much to even think about-“
“No worries honey,” he interrupted. “Lisa, we wanted to let you know, that…if there’s anything you or your brother needs at all…you know where to reach us, we want to be there for you two.”
I hugged them once again, “Thank you so much.”
We said our goodbyes and I was off to see Jeremy. All this time, all along…so much has changed, I’ve changed for the better, the worse, the better, and the worse again; but now…I think I’m going to be ok. And for the first time in a long time, I know what I want to do with my life, and who I want to do it with. Although some may look down upon us as to what we do together is wrong, but from the old Lisa Armstrong, she says… “Fuck off.”
