Destiny’s Door

Prologue

The moment Nashie Kalis Faray was born into this world she was met with undeniable joy and complete adoration. But unlike most births, it was also met with dismay and despair.

Nashie’s grandmother discovered it first.

“She bears the mark of destiny,” the elderly woman of sixty-five said.

The two parents of the child jerked their gazes up to the child’s grandmother, fear and dismay in their expressions.

There on the left shoulder of the tiny baby girl was the mark. The mark of a Destiny Child. It was round, the edges containing runes while the inside was a tangle of other runes, larger and lines that resembled pathways…almost similar to a Celtic knot. The marking was barely an inch wide as well as long, but as the child grew, it too, would stretch to be proportionate with its bearer.

“Mama,” the new mother said, “What are we going to do? There hasn’t been a Destiny Child in our family for three generations. It has only been in the branches of the rest of the family. Nashie is our third born.”

The grandmother looked at her daughter and then at the child she held squirming in her arms. “She is the third born of the third born in the third generation. Sometimes Destiny’s marking jumps around like that.” Her voice was calm and reasoning.

“But what do we do Narla?” the father asked.

Narla, the grandmother looked at him in turn and said simply, “Just raise her as you planned to. But know that when the time comes, she must come to pass Destiny’s Door.”
