As I walked out into that gentle rain
Just a small child with pajamas out there
It felt so good to smell.
Ended too soon for calming thought
When I heard mommy yell,
“Come inside, it’s cold and dim!”
As if my act had been a sin.
It felt so good to breathe
As I stood there in that precious dust
A wondering teenager fully clothed
Yet without his jacket
Feeling the chills run down my arms
I heard my brother tell me,
“Come inside to eat”
It felt wonderful to breathe
As I walked on through the moistened sky
A young man seeing the newer world
The sky added texture to the industry below
I watched the world spin
Wearing my coat
Then turned around again
To return to my home
Walking on the wrong side
I’d turn right back in fear.
Touching every puddle
On his slow journey back
He got inside and closed the blinds
Protected from darkness and wonder
Sitting down he thought to himself,
“It felt so good to breathe”
