Dawn

Away the east is breaking like a dream

That shatters at the calling of the lark.

From the lazy cloudbanks come the beams

Of rosy light, that chase away the dark.

The sky is deeper than the foaming sea,

But lightens into day's soft powder blue.

The darkness in the west sinks, as must be;

Moon bids the waking earth her soft adieu.

The bright spears of the dawn thrust faster still

To herald sun's triumphant, glorious rise.

The ling'rers of the night are caught and killed.

The shadows sink beneath the dawn's bright eyes.

The sun is up in splendor and in might

To fill the world with all her waking light.
