Chapter 1- Hollaback Girl
It was sunny and not a cloud was seen in the sky, as if it was the perfect day. When it really wasn’t for Lynette Daniels.
“Ugh…another uneventful year of school again…”
Lynette’s alarm awoke her to the dancing crazy hip hop tunes from HOT 97.5. Her hand slowly rose itself to the button, as it took a couple of trial and errors to finally turn it off. The sun peered through her window to her dark brown eyes, making her squint harder. Lynette knew it wasn’t going to do her any good just laying in her bed and whining about how school was starting again, for her mother and brother were getting ready and didn’t want to spend time waiting on her. She pulled the covers and sheets off her, and with a sluggish look, walked herself to the bathroom. She had thanked God that they had moved to a bigger house during the summer. Lynette had finally gotten a bathroom so she didn’t have to share it with, as she claimed, “Demon Seed” a k. a her younger brother. Michael, her older brother, had gone to UCLA for the fall so she had no other worries of the doubling amounts of the times the toilets seats were left up.
She finally got the bathroom and splashed, not intentionally, extra cold water on her face. She shivered and tried to come to her senses.
“Thirty more minutes and we’re out of here!” She heard the cat call from her mother, who was getting ready frantically as well for her job at the hospital as medical doctor for sick children.Herfather was already at work on the air force base so no "Have a good day at school today" from him, as usual. Her mother ran to the bathroom to see Lynette still in her matching yellow tank top pajamas. She rolled her eyes at the lazy teen and gave her the typical angry mother tone,
“If you spent as much time as you do doing nothing you’d get straight A’s!”
Being the typical perceived young teen, she rolled her eyes, but from an angle her mother couldn’t notice. Lynette hated when she brung up the played out sayings her parents, mostly her mother, threw at her when she wasn’t doing what they want her to. Lynette didn’t care though, for it was a new school year and that means new grades. This year was special though. She, along with her friends from Hayfield M.S, were finally becoming freshmen. Of course, which in their eyes meant high school parties, awesome pep rallies and cute sophomores and junior guys they could snag, for the seniors were too busy planning on either college or excited about finally leaving. Lynette didn’t really have her full attention on the accusations by her friends; she just played along for the long run.
Lynette obeyed her mom’s wishes and got ready quickly. She put on her new outfit and put on the usual: mascara, tinted lip-gloss, and Heavenly perfume from Victoria Secret. She combed and brushed her hair down which grew over the summer and placed a baby blue flower clip in it for decoration. Gathering her school supplies, her brother darted in her room.
“What do you want!? I’m getting ready, something you should be doing.”
“I don’t have to go in as early as you do anyway so it doesn’t matter. I just came in here to see if you have a pencil.” For Chris, it was his first day in middle school. He didn’t seem too excited like Lynette, who hid hers. He thought it was another year full of the same mean, boring, and stressful teachers.
“Well, I only have two and they are for ME, not YOU.”
Chris kicked his leg in the as if he were kicking large rocks.
“Why’d you ask me? I wouldn’t give you one anyway!” Lynette was quite grumpy this morning and really didn’t want to be bothered with, but that ended swiftly once she heard the words,
LET’S GO!!
Come from her mother’s mouth. She smiled and ran out the door, hitting her little brother upside the head in the process. She jotted down her outside steps. Her mom had already been waiting in the car for five minutes so she was already pissed. Lynette ignored it knowing this happens all the time when she takes her to school or the bus stop, but for the first day of high school, she dropped her off at school.
After her departure from the car, she stood for a moment. Hayfield High was huge, bustling students running towards each other to hug their friends they hadn’t seen over the short-lived summer months while the couples kissed each other rejoicing their “love” for one another. Teens rolling up in the parking lot, blasting their loud music as the deans patrolled the area. The school was so diverse to add, even though located in a not-so-good neighborhood. The school had a program where students from all over the city could join if they got good grades. Lynette was in it fortunately because of course her mother wouldn't allow it any other way. She couldn’t believe it she made it to high school though, but she thanked God she wasn’tgoing through italone. Back in middle school, she was always surrounded by people mostly her good friends and associates. They’d be the loudest, but the most entertaining, funniest bunch in the whole school. Everyone knew them. She’d wonder if this year would be any different. She had a feeling it’d be a lot different since nobody really knew the real her.
Inhaling a deep breath, she exhaled as she started off towards the entrance. Opening the doors was just as nuts to her as outside. Tons of booths open for registration for new students/freshmen and others were clubs. She didn’t know what to do. Gladly enough, a huge lift was raised from her shoulders as sherecognized the familiar voices from afar. Her friends Melody and Carlita ran up towards her wrapping their arms around Lynette. They jumped up and down and rejoiced.
“Girl, I am too glad you back! I missed you Lee!” Carlita was the very judgmental one out of their group. She always had and always will have comment for everything. Today, there was no need. She was just glad she saw Lynette again.
“I know me too. Being in North Carolina the whole summer can get you sometimes.”
“Well as long as you came back, I’m all okay with that!” said Melody. Her dark skinned face shone in the light, making her eyes look light brown. She lifted her hand using it to try to block the morning sun from her eyes. The rest of the time they caught up on almost everything while waiting to get their schedules for the year. Lynette told them about her trip to NC to visit her dad’s side of the family, Melody about her days with her many useless boyfriends, and Carlita’s notorious fights down in the ghettos in the city while staying with her aunt for the summer. As usual, Melody and Lynette shook their heads as Carlita shrugged and said “What?!” as if it was a daily thing to do. To her it was no problem. Other friends from Hayfield MS saw them and they joined in on the crazy and wild conversations. Thirteen minutes passed by and finally they got to the front. Lynette was next, placing her folders and Nike backpack between her legs as she got her pre-schedule out.
“And may I ask your name?” questioned counselor, flipping her overly teased hair from her glass lenses.
“Lynette Dan-”
She stopped in her tracks. A sight she had never saw in her life walked in front of her very own eyes. His smile was bright, like the sparkles that appeared on the cartoon characters. His hair was jet black, medium, and spiked styled in way that screamed creativity. Facial features so exotic, yet still had that All American flare. He walked as though he was full of confidence and maturity, so she knew right away he wasn’t a freshman. Tall, not to dark, nor too pale. Not to mention, he was Asian. In her eyes, he was perfect.
“Gorgeous…”
Her thoughts her mumbled, just like her words when she stuttered to say her last name.
“HELLO?” the counselor had to snap her fingers to get her attention back. Lynette shook her head quickly and said,
“Daniels…its Daniels” The counselor penciled her in and gave her the schedule. Her eyes continued to scan the quad area for the handsome guy she just saw. A hand was placed on her shoulder. In reaction, she jumped and then calmed down, grabbing her chest.
“Damn, it’s only me.” Melody stepped back a little, to give her some space. “So what was all that up there about?”
“What do you mean?” Lynette tried to play it off, but she knew it wasn’t going to work. Melody knew her more than anyone else. Lynette could always tell her things she wouldn’t dare tell Carlita. She knew she was trustworthy. Though this time, she wanted to keep this to herself.
“You know exactly what I mean. That scene up there with the counselor, the whole DUH look!”
Melody just had to demonstrate the way she was looking.
Lynette sighed and shrugged, still trying to shake it off so she’d forget about asking anymore.
“Nothing. Really. I just had a moment. You know how I am! Miss Unpredictable!”
Really in her mind, the image of the boy was stuck. The school unfortunately conceived of over 4000 students so the possibility of seeing him again was surely low. Even so, she still had a feeling or at least she’d hope to see him again…
