Chapter 3: What You Waiting For?!

“Why couldn’t I just say no?”

That thought secretly ran through her mind the whole entire time as she was walking with Carlita and Melody home. Sure, she laughed at their jokes and their rude comments on the innocent bystanders walking passed, but was she paying attention? Not at all. Terrance’s party and the mysterious cutie were scrambled in her mind. Thinking quickly she didn’t want those two on her back again so she replied.

“I think its best I get home…” sighs were heard and rolling of eyes was seen from her friends. She had to save herself before they “attacked” her again.

“To get ready for the party! Duh!”

“Ohhhh!” They all laughed in relief. “I thought you were gonna bail on us, but we know we can count on you!” Carlita patted on Lynette’s back, but it felt more like a slap than anything else. Not to mention she hits like a man. Lynette caught her breath while Carlita smiled her mouth wide as the Pacific Ocean. Melody nodded,

“We’ll get you at 8:00!”

“Huh? Why 8:00? Isn’t that when the party starts?”

Melody let out a chuckle.

“Of course girl! We are going to be fashionably late. You know how we do! He won’t mind, especially with you.”

Lynette didn’t seem amused. She had no interest in Terrance and she had planned to end this plea to get her back tonight at the party. Rude? She calls it necessary. For someone to come to you and offer his money everyday at lunch, attempt to walk you to class, and even let you come to sporting events at the school for free is great. If you liked them that is. Thank goodness she was blessed with the characteristic of compassion. She didn’t want to take advantage of him. Without a doubt in the world, she pitied him.

Continuing on, she shrugged and said,

“He can keep trying, but he'll never get with me. Like I say-“

“You break my trust in you; you lose my trust for you. We know, we know!”

Carlita and Melody finished one of Lynette’s favorite phrases.

“Well, with that said. See yall soon!” Lynette started walking fast to her house. Carlita and Melody just waved and walked to their respective homes.

Lynette felt so relieved when she grabbed her keys do the door, opened it, and was finally home. As her usually routine went; grab a peach, drop off backpack on the dining table, and then plopped herself onto the sofa and watched whatever the Digital Cable channels had to offer. Nothing, just nothing. It’d be usually re-runs or they’d show the same old played out movies. Lynette got bored, took her things, and migrated on into her domain. Her sanctum. Her bedroom.

Entering it was like going into two different people. Four walls. Two covered with celebrities such as Usher and etc. On the other two sides, anime, Japanese pop and Japanese rock celebrities, and RPG game posters plastered on the walls. Linkin Park’s lyrics were pinned to her wall, “Somewhere I Belong” it was. She swore they new her. No one ever saw her room or even this side of her. She planned to keep it a secret, for as long as she could. She felt like a superhero, one who had to keep her identity underground. As it seemed, she was an anime obsessed, Japanese culture loving’, alternative rock punk, all around geek. She hated the word, but it was true. No denying that. Her own family would even critique her when they heard the sounds of Utada Hikaru, Japanese music in general, coming from her room. She didn’t care. She’d turn it up even more…

“Lynette, open the door now!” It was her father. Luther Daniels, the Military General of his sector. Lynette jumped out the bed and scurried to the door. She opened it and closed the door behind her.

“What is up with the Japanese music?” he asked with a confused look.

“It’s helping me with my Japanese…is that so bad that you had to come to me and ask?”

“Not quite. I just found it, a bit…odd that’d you listen to it all the time. Plus, your mother is going crazy over it. She insisted I ask you, it wasn’t my idea. If you ask me, I don’t care nor do I mind. You know how your mother is,”

She knew her father was too cool to ask her something like that. She laughed and hugged her father. The party popped into her mind. Perfect timing she thought.

“Um...dad?”

He let go and had his full attention on her. She had to sound convincing, or he’d wouldn’t let her go.

“There is this party and I really, really want to go. Mom keeps complaining on how I always get on the computer and never do anything, right? So now I can prove to her!”

He had a skeptical facial expression. “No No No!” ran through her mind. She was preparing for a let down.

“Aw, I guess you can. When does it start?”

Lynette’s eyes lit up like the Las Vegas Strip at night.

“At 8:00!”

“When does it end?”

“Umm…it didn’t say.”

“What?! What kind of party is this? You can’t go if there are no chaperones!”

She had to think quickly. “Oh yeah!” she remembered. Everyone in her family loved Terrance so it was definitely a plus to the discussion. He was, so you say, a family friend years before they got together.

“Do you remember Terrance daddy?”

“Oh yeah, that great young man you used to be with all the time. Whatever happened to him? How about his parents?”

She wasn’t going to explain to him about the drama that went down between them, nor did she ever dare. Lynette wasn’t allowed to have boyfriends, but of course she dropped that rule.

“I don’t know, but it’s his party.”

That directed his answer to a yes. She could feel it.

“Okay, you can go. Be home before 12:00 though, you don’t want me over there and beat up any boys do you? Even worse, your mom coming over there and drag you by your hair home!”

“No dad, I don’t.” She laughed and hugged him again, harder. He sighed. He knew he’d get his throat cut off by his wife Cornelia if she found out. Lynette jumped up and down and quickly got ready.

Eight-o-clock rolled around and Carlita was at the door. Lynette opened the door, and looked at Carlita’s face.

“Your gonna get Terrance and all the other guys followin’ you all night tonight!”

Lynette stood beautifully as the moonlight shone on her, revealing her gorgeous brown eyes. Her hair in cute curls, hip hugger low rise Baby Phat jeans and a purple Baby Phat stomach length jacket to match, showing off her flat stomach. Awesome Silver Star earrings and a medium sized star diamond necklace, classified as “Bling Bling” in the Hip Hop world. The total package came to mind as Carlita observed Lynette’s. “Hot” seemed to be written all over her body, but she thought insecure was the right word.

She just smiled as Carlita stood there looking cute her own self, with her Roca Wear skin tight jumpsuit and her leather black stilettos. You could tell her parents let her do anything she wanted.

Lynette let out a “Good Bye!” at her father, who was sitting on the coach cheering for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He replied a “Good Bye” back and with that, she closed the door.

“Who is taking us?” asked Lynette. She noticed the black Escalade truck as the windows rolled down. Melody’s seventeen year old brother, Dante, popped his head out and winked at her. She stuck her tongue at him and walked around to the other side of the truck. They got in and Melody turned around, since she was in the front seat.

“You guys ready for the biggest party of this year?!”

“Hell yeah!!” The two said.

“Hell yeah nothin’, yall better not mess up my interior. I paid big bucks for this stuff!”

“Oh shut up and drive!”

With that, they were off. Excitement ran through her mind and body, but so did the worries. Little did she know that the events that were to happen tonight could dictate her life in the near future, for better and worse.
