One Wish

For you, my darling,

With every heartbeat I wish

That you would grow yet more beautiful

With every rising of the sun,

And with each pulse of living blood in your veins,

And that each time you looked upon yourself

Reflected in still lake or silver glass or in the eye

Of birds overhead and your worshipful lovers,

That your own eye could discern the beauty increasing;

And I wish that kings would become beggars before you, swearing and pleading

To rip their own hearts still-beating from their chests for the memory of your smile

And that you will smile

And smile upon me last;

And then I hope

You fucking go blind.
