The Sweetest Sin

Ch 4

By: Helena F. Lupin

Wolfe could not leave the child there, not now. He was going to pay the price for this, he could see it now. His ears and tail twitched with a mixture of agitation and fear for both himself and the boy he was ushering along to a cab. Sar seemed blissfully oblivious to the dangers hanging above his head, ready to come down from a rapidly fraying thread. They together had packed one of Sar's suitcases, he was going to be staying with the angels now. This would be best, now they could keep track of him and bring him upon their side.

Sar was well welcomed into the place, he would be sharing a room with Leo, the least likely angel to molest him. Wolfe was given the tongue lashing of his life by Giles who could be heard shouting throughout the entire building. The owner of the building called them about the complaints he was getting from the others around them. Not a good thing. But at least it made Giles calm somewhat and stop to think. Wolfe stood in the other's room, waiting for the anger to explode outwards again at him. He expected to literally be burned as if he had been sent to Hell. Giles drew in a deep breath and sighed, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose as per normal and looked to Wolfe. "It was foolish...but it is done now. You will keep main care over him. Do not let Dominic alone with him please?"

Wolfe suddenly felt such a need to break Dominic's face in, to tell him the boy was his, not to be touched by anyone else. It made Wolfe stop and think. When was the last time he was possessive? Never. That is when. He felt a shiver of anger touch his spine again. It was out of place, but it was right. He could catch Sar's scent even now and wanted to pull the teen into the room, just so he was in his sight. It was really pissing him off that he could catch Leo's scent even so close to his boy. He wanted to tear something apart...then he noticed Giles was speaking. He looked at the other angel and realized the world was gold tinted. Giles's voice was too dim to catch in his sharp wolf ears. Wolfe was not sure what was making him so angered. He was turning, moving, he knew Giles was trying to catch him, but he was moving far faster then the other angel.

The door was suddenly missing from Wolfe's path as he moved into the living room. He felt it before them all, and it should not have been possible. He was grabbing Sar's arm roughtly, jerking him against his chest and putting his back to the window, wings in the way just as the windows exploded inward. He snagged Leo as well, pulling him out of the way as well. Dominic was in the room, a massive scarlet bladed broad sword in hand, Daniel was moving in with a more normal sword in his own hands. Giles was moving toward the window to try and throw up a shield in the way of what was coming through the broken window. It was large, a massive misshapen human form of scarlet skin and black claws and a pair of horns set upon the head, wide spread wings of black feathers fluttered behind it, delicate compared to the rest of the hulking body. "What is that!" Sar cried.

"A fallen." Wolfe spat.

"A fallen! That's what a fallen angel looks like!" Sar shouted.

"Yes, that's what we become in the darkness and fires." Wolfe shoved Sar into Leo's hands. "Take him out of here! Guard him!" Sar screamed an objection as he was tossed over the angel of life's shoulder and carted off.

"Why is there only one!" Dominic shouted, his eyes livid. "There should be more! They travel in packs like damned wolves!"

"Hey!" Wolfe growled. "Just kill it!" Wolfe rushed it, hands becoming clawed as he leapt tearing into the things throat. It let out an unholy scream that was like the mix of an infant crawling on glass and screaming, unable to stop and nails on a chalkboard. Wolfe's own sensitive ears began to ring, to bleed even as he tried in vine to brake it's jaw to stop that sound. Dominic was seeking out the heart in the chest, but the scary thing about a fallen's heart was that it moved around in the chest cavity.

"God damn it! Hold still!" Dominic shouted.

"Thou shalt not use the Lord's name in vine!" Giles shouted from where he was, away from the battle. He was not trained in fighting as much as they were. It was a great time to be quoting the bible, and only Giles could have done it and gotten away with it. Even as his friends were fighting this massive being from hell. Dominic and Daniel with sword, Wolfe with claws and savage teeth.

Wolfe felt the world slowing again, heard it dulling and it became tinted in gold again. He could see each flinch of the fallen's muscles in slow motion, could see the emotions flickering through Dominic's eyes and Daniel's lips muttering chants to slowly to hear. Wolfe glanced around as if he had all the time in the world. He could see Sar standing in the doorway. "Across the back." He said, his voice echoing, soft, but Wolfe could hear it. "Near the center...right side of the spine. It's there." Wolfe turned his head slowly, his hand moving to that spot that the other had spoken to him. His claws slid into the normally tougher flesh and found it shredded like tissue paper. Then the world was on high speed suddenly again. The screaming cut off as his claws sunk into hot blood and the thick beating meat of the fallen's heart.

When the large shape fell over, slumping half in half out the window the angels began to back off. Wolfe stood just beside it, the still trying to pump black heart in his hands. He held the heart of one who would have been a brother to him. A fellow angel. He felt his eyes stinging. It was so unfair. It was cold. Even the flesh that should have been hot with body heat was cold, the rapidly drying blood running down his arm was turning to dust. The body was thinning, returning to it’s once heavenly state. It hurt to kill a fallen, they always became what they once more.

He dropped the useless heart onto the floor as Giles gently spoke to Dominic and Daniel to get rid of the body. Sar was moving across the room to Wolfe, Leo peeking in the door. He had put Sar down upon the teen’s tears and begging. Sar wrapped his arms about Wolfe’s waist and laid his head against his shoulder as the Wolf Angel tried to hold back more of the sorrow within him as he watched another Wolf Angel having become a fallen being dragged away. The body to be burned.

Wolfe moved to the bathroom, washing off his skin as best he could, Giles bringing him clothes to change into. “What happened out there?” Giles asked. “Your eyes were glowing...and you found the heart with no problem.”

“Sar told me where it was.” Giles blinked and Wolfe explained. “It was like the world went on pause almost, just so I could hear him, see him...he knew where the heart was.” As if it suddenly dawned on Giles his eyes went wide. Something had dawned on him. Something very amazing that he had not seen in nearly a thousand years as he tore out of the bathroom to his room. “Wha-hey!” Wolfe followed, tugging on his shirt and pants as he went. The others were still trying to clean up the blood, Sar was sitting on the couch.

Giles tore into his stash of books in a large case he had brought along with him. He jerked out a large, old green leather bound book. Within the book he found the page he wanted and was back in the living room, reading aloud for all to hear. “It is rare, but within the human race there is the gift to bind themselves to one angel that is their match and whom as tasted of them, bound forever are they and so the human will be blessed with the gift of sensing a fallen heart, and their angel the gift to protect them from the fallen. It is a sacred blond that binds them and keeps them to one another. So I God have written here in my ledger, so now it is nature.”

All the other angels were stunned for a moment before all of them shouted. “YOU STOLE GOD’S LEDGER!”
