Prologue

Abbey Brooks tied her hair up in a ponytail, smiling brightly into her reflection in the mirror. She only smiled wider at the thought of her gorgeous and loving boyfriend, Bryan Winters. She pictured his dark messy brown hair and his flashing blue eyes.

“I’ll be off, Mum, bye!” she called over her shoulder, going downstairs and grabbing her Billabong messenger bag. Her mother merely nodded before returning to her breakfast. Abbey shrugged and picked up her car keys before jumping into her Mustang.

She went to pick up her best friend, Leia Kramer. Leia was German. She had dark brown hair down to her shoulders in layers and bright blue eyes. Honestly, she had the same hair and eye color as Bryan but it didn’t really matter. “Hey Lei!” she called out.

Leia lived in a duplex ever since she turned eighteen. She hated her parents with a loathing so she preferred with her own and a bit of Abbey’s to stay alone. “Coming, coming!” she heard a flustered voice say angrily. “Sheesh, whose got your knickers up in a bunch?”

“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you!” Abbey called out between laughs. “Hurry!”

Leia appeared out of her duplex, her flustered form entering the Mustang. “I hate you so much,” she muttered angrily, tossing her backpack under her seat. Abbey grinned, her perfect white teeth shining.

“I do my best.” Abbey turned left and finally arrived at their school, Brick Elm Academy. Leia tied up her All-Stars while Abbey rolled up her long-sleeved blouse up to her elbows.

“Hey Abbey!” Alex Hunter called out. Alex was Bryan’s best friend and he seemed pretty nervous. Abbey grinned a fantastic million-watt smile at him.

“Hey Alex, where’s Bryan?” she questioned. Alex gulped nervously and went up to the Mustang, hugging Leia as he did.

“Uh, Bryan, he’s, um, well, he’s getting something for his mom this morning. He’ll be a tad bit late,” he stammered. Abbey raised her eyebrows in suspicion. “No, seriously, Abbey.”

“Uh, okay.” She parked her Mustang and gave Alex a good morning hug. “So, where’s that latest girlfriend of yours?”

“Not again, Alex…” Leia groaned. Alex smirked and glanced at Leia, his smile widening.

“Oh, is that jealousy I hear, Ms. Leia Kramer?” he taunted. Leia rolled her eyes and shoved him playfully. “Ouch, no need for violence.”

“You rightfully deserve it, Alex,” a voice said between laughs. The three turned their heads and saw Andrea Martin, smiling at them. “Have any of you seen Bryan?”

“No, why?” Abbey was suddenly interested in what Andrea was looking for.

“Well, he promised me roses this morning for a good first monthsary,” Andrea said, blushing slightly. Abbey stared at Andrea in confusion.

“I beg your pardon?” Her British side got the best of her. They glanced at her, not seeing her British side before.

“Um, yeah, he said you two broke up, that’s why he and I got together,” Andrea said uncertainly. Abbey’s eyes blew up in fury. She turned to see Alex’s apologetic look.

“I’m sorry, Abbey…” he said softly. “He was supposed to meet Andrea while I try to distract you so you won’t look for him.”

Abbey tried not to cry, although the tears stained her eyes quickly. “Um, excuse me a moment.” Abbey rushed out of the circle and quickly jumped in her Mustang.

Tears rapidly fell down her cheeks like rivers as she sped out of the parking lot. She wiped them away with one hand and steered herself away. But she couldn’t take it. She swerved to the right and the next thing she saw was black and nothing more.

“Abbey?” a voice said gently, prodding Abbey with a finger. Leia sighed and stared at the bloody figure contrasting on the pale white sheets of the hospital bed.

“D’you think she’ll wake up soon?” she asked Alex, who was holding Abbey’s hand as if they were brother and sister. He shrugged, tears forming in his eyes.

“I hope she does,” he croaked out. Bryan and Andrea entered the room nervously, fingers laced. Leia stood up quickly and glared at him.

“Get the bloody hell out.”

“I can explain, Leia—”

“Get. Out,” she said through gritted teeth. Bryan found no use to argue with her, so he went outside, Andrea following. Leia, Alex, Abbey’s parents and a nurse waited until she woke up. Finally, Abbey moved and sat up with weary, tired eyes.

“Who are you?” she whispered softly. “Who am I?”
