When Darkness Falls
‘Catch me as I fall
Say you’re here
And it’s all over now.’
“Please no more! Please daddy. I can’t take any more.”
The plea fell on deaf ears. The tears of the crying child went unnoticed. She desperately wanted someone to hear, someone to rescue her from this torment, tell her it was all over, but no one heard and no one cared. She was alone.
‘Speaking to the atmosphere
No one here’s and I fall into myself.
This truth drives me into madness’
Her brother had always been there for her. He always took their dad’s wrath upon himself, saying he was the older so he could handle it. But this time, he wasn’t here. She was alone with her father and he was having his way with her. And the pain was unbearable.
‘I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
If I will it all away’
The child whimpered and tried to imagine herself somewhere else. Never before had she experienced any type of pain like this before. It hurt more than she could have ever imagined. She tried to will it all away, hoping if she thought hard enough, the pain would leave. If she willed it away, it had to go. It had to.
‘Don’t turn away
Don’t give into the pain
Don’t try to hide
Though they’re screaming you name’
The pain was becoming too much. She tried to push her father away, but her weak attempts did nothing to his strong body. His torture continued and he increased his delivery of the pain. The child cried out in horror. All she wanted at the moment was death. It would be a safe haven to hide away in. It seemed to be screaming her name and she wanted it. She wanted to give in to the pain and just let go.
‘Don’t close your eyes
God knows what lies behind them
Don’t turn out the light
Never sleep never die’
Ariel sat up in her bed with a gasp. Sweat ran down her forehead and her body trembled. She had had another nightmare. Her sleep was always haunted by nightmares. Ever since that first night, she hated nighttime. Every time she closed her eyes, her father was in her dreams. Every time she turned out the lights and tried to sleep, she was afraid he would walk in. She was afraid to sleep, for fear of being caught of guard. She never knew when he would come back.
‘I’m frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there’s much more to come’
Her door squeaked opened and a shadowy figure immerged into the room. Ariel groaned silently. She was frightened as he walked inside her room. She acted like she was asleep, hoping he would just leave. He walked silently to her bedside and knelt down. Gently, he rubbed a hand across her face, pushing the hair from her face. The touch frightened her, but she knew more was to come. Somehow, she knew in her heart. Much more was to come.
‘Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears’
She was so afraid that she couldn’t even move as he began to ready her for his torture. She could not hold back the tears that were stinging at her eyes. They were filling her eyes and began to fall down her face as the pain began again.
‘I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
If I will it all away’
Again, she willed it away. Her only hope was that this time it would be faster and over more quickly. Perhaps this time the pain would not be as bad. She could hope. She could only hope.
‘Don’t turn away
Don’t give into the pain
Don’t try to hide
Though they’re screaming you name’
This time was no better; in fact, it felt worse. She cried out in agony, hoping for any relief. But there was none. Nothing could ease the pain.
‘Don’t close your eyes
God knows what lies behind them
Don’t turn out the light
Never sleep never die’
When it was finally over and he left the room, Ariel was left sobbing on her bed. She could not close her eyes for all she saw was pain and anguish. The darkness that was in her room seemed to be creeping into her very soul. There was no escape.
‘Fallen angel at my feet
Whispered voices at my ear
Death before my eyes
Lying next to me I fear’
The darkness that was around her seemed to be calling out to her. It whispered to her, persuading her to give in. Death lay before her.
‘She beckons me
Shall I give in
Upon my end shall I begin
Forsaking all I’ve fallen for
I rise to meet the end’
Death was calling to her. There was no reason left to live. She wanted the end. That sounded better. Things that once mattered in her life, no longer matter. She wanted to forsake them all and rise to meet her death. The end would be better.
‘Servatis a periculum,
Servatis a malefic’
Save us from danger
Save us from evil
