The day I got the letter was already going down the toilet. I forgot my homework, blanked on a test and got shoved in a puddle. I grabbed the mail as I hurried inside. As I threw it on the table, one letter caught my eye. There in shinny gold writing, was my name. As I opened it I had no idea that it’s contents would change my life in so many ways.

The letter was in a seemingly innocent white business sized envelope with no return address. It was addressed to Ms. Crystal Llewelyn. That was really cool; it made me feel old and wise. I ripped it open. The letter read:

Ms. Crystal Llewelyn,

You have been selected to join our prestigious high school, Michigan High School of the Arts. We are located in Northern Michigan.

Michigan? That was odd. Almost on the other side of the country. Anyways.

Your application to our school has been accepted. In addition, you will be attending our selective Drama Program. This school is a boarding school and the attached notices have a list of the admission fees.

A Drama program?! I probably wouldn’t be able to go. Admission alone must cost a fortune. We were pretty tight on cash, now that dad was out on disability. Better find out how much. Wait. This isn’t a price list.

Ms. Crystal Llewelyn,

In addition to being accepted to our school, you have qualified for a complete scholarship. This includes room and board, along with three square meals (and a snack) each day. Any items you wish to purchase in the local town, however, are at your own expense. To alert us of your acceptance, please fill out and mail the attached forms immediately.

Oh my god! A full ride! I don’t even remember applying for this scholarship, but who cares! A full ride to a drama school. Wow! Wait until mom and dad hear about this.
