Dragon and Wolf
A lone wolf walks solemnly through the grasslands. His fur glows pure silver and white in the moonlight. He searches for the one thing he had lost a long time ago, a pack of his own.
High above the earth, a dragon glides on air currents. Her royal blue scales glitter from the play of the moon’s light. She searches this night as well, but for what she doesn’t know.
Their paths have crossed before, when both first started their quest. They had thought then that the next time they met, each would have what they searched for. Neither knew then that what it was, was so close yet so far away.
Wolf stops as he hears the gentle rustle of the wind increase. He looks around at his surroundings, but sees nothing. He then stares up into the sky, and howls his hello when he spots Dragon.
Dragon slows to a stop, then hovers above the ground as she hears a howling wolf. Focusing her sharp eyes on the terrain beneath her she spots the silver figure standing a few yards away. She dives straight for him. When she nears him, she thrusts out her wings and lands next to him.
“ Hello, Dragon.” Says Wolf. “ Hello, Wolf.” Says Dragon. “ Have you found what you have been looking for?” “ No Wolf, I haven’t. Have you found a new pack?” “ No, I haven’t. Have you searched everywhere, Dragon?” “ All but the Eastern Plain.” “ Hmm, that is the way I am heading. Care to join me, Dragon?” “ I would love to, Wolf. Would you mind telling me about your journey thus far?” “ Sure, Dragon. After all it is a ways till we reach the Eastern Plains.”
Wolf’s journey began ten years ago, a year after the incident. When he first started, he doubted he would make it that far. The fire had not only killed his pack, but it had also taken its toil on him as well. His back ached from where the flames had scorched him. Wolf had never believed that when he came to Neeliks, he would meet one of the fabled dragons.
The pack leader, his father, had once told his family about them. They were only legends to Wolf, a myth. Fierce creatures that control the skies and are capable of breathing fire out from their throats, capable of awesome power and strength, though they are not known for showing kindness towards the other species of the world.
Then he had met her. Dragon was in human form, as he himself was. Humans tend to be afraid of what they don’t understand all changelings know this. That was the reason they were incognito, for fear leads to hatred and then death.
She had long blonde hair and striking amethyst eyes. When Wolf saw her, he knew that she was the same as he, although he never had thought she was a dragon. The moment Dragon had laid eyes on him; he knew she was worried about him and his injuries. He had stayed with her that night and allowed her to heal his wounds.
During that time, Wolf had told her about the day that stranger came to ask for aid from his father. His name was Syrus and had told his father that bandits had tortured and killed his wife and child. His father was very kind-hearted and decided to help Syrus.
He had taken five of the strongest males of the pack and left with Syrus to his home where the bandits were. Little did any of them know that it was all a trap. As soon as Wolf’s father and the others were out of sight and ear shot range, the bandits attacked the remaining of the pack. Most of them were Wolf’s brothers and sisters that were too young to defend them selves and the few elder wolves that were left, were easily out-numbered by the bandits.
After they had ravaged the pack’s home and injured most of them, the bandits started the fire to finish the pack off. Without realizing it they left Wolf alive and left to catch up with Syrus. Wolf had followed their scent to their home and watched as Syrus and his men killed the leader of the pack and the others.
He waited until nightfall, then entered the encampment and slowly took the bandits out one by one. Wolf had never found Syrus before the fire reached the encampment. He barely got out of it before being burned alive, but as he left through the way he entered it, a flaming tree branch landed on his back. It severely injured him, but didn’t kill him and he was able to reach the town.
After hearing what made Wolf start his search, Dragon had felt obliged to telling him what had happened to cause her to start hers. Eleven years ago, she lived as a human with an entire human family. She had no clue of her being a changeling and never knew she was a dragon. The change didn’t come upon her until she was walking home one night from visiting a friend whom lived in the village of Cray. When she reached the fork in the road, which was the halfway mark between her home and Cray, all hell broke loose within her. Causing her to fall unconscious to the dirt road.
When Dragon awoke, she knew immediately that something was wrong with her. Before she fell unconscious the night was freezing to her, but not anymore. She also realized that when she stood up, the dirt road was far beneath her. As Dragon looked down at her feet, she noticed she had long, voluminous blue legs that ended in claws as her feet. She had freaked when she saw that and ran off into the forest. Hoping that it was all a dream, that she must have hit her head when she fell.
When Dragon stopped running, she stood in front of a lake and stared down into the water at her reflection. It was then that she realized she was a dragon and her family had lied to her all those years she lived with them. She had slept at that lake the entire night. The next day when she went home, she was in human form once again. Dragon had went into the house and threw most of her clothing and items she really cared for into a bag, then left her home never to return to it.
She had not told her family she was leaving and after awhile they had become worried and sent out search parties to find her. One such party found her sleeping on the outskirts of a town known for thieves and murderers. When they realized she was only asleep, they had begun to wonder how she had survived in such a horrific place, let alone not have a scratch on her. It wasn’t till nightfall that they find out why. The party’s curiosity had been too much to handle and so they waited for her to awaken. Wanting only to know how she was protecting herself in such a dangerous place.
When Dragon awoke, she felt hungry and went into the town to feast as she did every night. As she entered, some of the thieves in it decided to prey on her, hoping for an easy target to get their kicks. There were five in all that surrounded her without a fight and thought they had it made. Which was a fatal mistake on their behalf. Dragon was curious about how strong she really was and decided since they wanted a fight; she would try out her new strength on them. Within moments, all of them were defeated and seriously injured.
Upon seeing this, the search party quickly left and reported it back to Dragon’s father. He did not enjoy what they told him and called back all the searchers her sent out to find her. When they returned, he changed their orders and demanded that they follow him to where she was. He no longer cared for Dragon as his daughter and now only wanted her death. None of them returned back to their homes and families. Since then she had given up her human name and has been called Dragon ever since.
They had departed ways after a week when Wolf was completely healed. They left Neeliks at the same time, but went separate directions. Knowing that they would run across each other in the future. Wolf had left heading towards Cayle, whereas Dragon flew off to the Isle of Myst.
