Free

The dark hair falls over her face like a veil

Eyes the color of charcoal peer through

She moves as if in a dream

Slowly, surely, her legs carry her across the room

She stands poised at the window

Her hands rest lightly on the sill

The view is spectacular

City lights wink at her from all angles

They blind her while wrapping her in their embrace

And in that moment, she knows

She is not in control as her body climbs up onto the narrow ledge

The wind blows her dress around her legs

Her hair streams behind her in ribbons

She closes her eyes and releases herself to the sky

It answers her call

Her earthly body falls back to the ground

As her spirit spirals upwards

Floating, it hovers over the same city lights that welcomed her not so long ago
The sight gives her comfort, but as she watches

They vanish one by one

The darkness falls over her face like a veil
