It was with some difficulty that I managed to locate an empty, untouched classroom. And I guess that’s the reason why I’m feeling all those unstirred dust stuffing up my nose right now. I made a face. Just how long had this classroom been isolated? It repulsed me. And well, I guess Kilan felt disgusted too, since he was currently baring his teeth at me. His glaring eyes were blaming me for bringing him here.
I inconspicuously back away from him, not wanting those sharp teeth anywhere near me.
But of course, nothing can escape Kilan’s oh-so-mighty eyes. He saw through me immediately and huffed scornfully. Oh how dare he. . . is it wrong to protect my safety first? Stupid fox.
I let out a breath. “Well, come on, rant all you want, my darling fox.” I initiated monotonously.
Without missing a beat, Kilan transformed. And of course, I didn’t miss a chance to let my eyes have a feast. Besides, he didn’t have a shirt with him. Well, he did have a shirt, but it was with me; inside my bag. I didn’t think I want to take it out right now.
“I’m not entering a fucktard beauty contest.” Kilan stated calmly; his expression eerily serene.
A shiver unconsciously shot up my spine when he said that. Although Kilan appeared unruffled outwardly, I could sense the overpowering emotions clashing inside of him. He was definitely incensed. It was like the calm before the storm.
“It’s not my fault.”
“Your friend’s mistake is your responsibility.” Kilan replied offhandedly.
I rolled my eyes and tried to contain the exasperation inside of me. “What’s done cannot be undone. Stop fucking whining.” I gritted out.
Kilan’s navy orbs flashed, but it was gone in an instant. “What if I bail on you?”
I stiffened. “That would be like, god, so embarrassing. I wouldn’t let you do that, believe me.”
Kilan smirked and stepped closer to me, invading my personal space. “I don’t think you can contain me, Raeanne.” He said huskily.
My breath hitched. He was standing way too close to me. And I could smell his scent. My heartbeat quickened against my will. It didn’t help that he only had a pair of boxers on. I should have passed him his shirt just now! Damn. He was teasing me, I know he was! Oh god . . . I took a deep breath and pushed him away.
It took me a moment to gather my bearings. Kilan was still looking at me with that insufferable smirk in place. I couldn’t help it. I glared at him. “You know, we could always withdraw from the contest.”
“So why didn’t you do that instead of bringing me here?” Kilan raised an eyebrow.
I sighed. “Mum’s gonna be so upset if we withdraw.”
Kilan frowned. A short silence stretched between us.
“You’ll do it, don’t you?”
A slight grimace.
“Come on, for Mum?”
“Well, fuck.”
•••
I happily carried Kilan over to the grooming section. I almost giggled when I saw a bulldog getting a trim. I know it’s mean of me, but it’s just so funny. And besides, I’m in a rather giddy mood now.
Kilan slid a glance over at me, as if daring me to hand him over to the . . . hair trimmers? I wasn’t exactly sure what they are called, but whatever.
“Hi! Does your pet need a trim?”
I observed the girl standing before me. She had on a smile that was too wide and too fake. I decided that I didn’t like her. If she was going to help Kilan get a trim . . . I glanced down, and sure enough, Kilan was pointing daggers at me.
“It’s really cheap! Won’t hurt your pocket at all.” The girl’s smile turns up a notch.
“Are you going to be doing the trimming?” I asked innocently.
“Uh, of course. The others are all busy with the other animals.” Her mouth looked like it’s going to split in half soon.
Hmm . . . should I just walk away or should I entrust Kilan to this split mouth girl? Decisions, decisions. Hm.
Well, either way, it seems like it’s going to be interesting. It doesn’t hurt to see who’s going to suffer more at the end, does it?
I dumped Kilan into the girl’s arms. “Help yourself.” I said cheerfully. And good luck.
Kilan’s eyes narrowed towards me, but it was soon directed towards split mouth girl, who was now attempting to comb Kilan’s fur. He let out a growl and bared his teeth. The girl’s smile slipped.
“Now now, I’m going to make you beautiful, so you keep still, alright?” She tried to pacify Kilan.
I leaned back against the wall, a small grin attached to my lips. I decided to relax and just enjoy this show . . . for now.
I snickered softly as Kilan smack the girl’s hand away with his tail.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
I glanced over. “Oh yes, I am.” I purred happily. Well, it isn’t everyday that I could control Kilan this way. And it’s all thanks to the leash in my hand right now. My grin grew bigger.
Ace shook his head. “You’re such a bitch, you know that? But that’s why I love you for it.”
For a moment, I wondered if there’s a double meaning to Ace’s words, but I shook it off. Ace doesn’t take things seriously most of the time. He just says and does things for kicks.
“So. . . . ”
I raised an eyebrow in question.
“I heard that your overprotective pet is taking part in the beauty contest?” Ace inquired.
“Yeah. Seems like news got around fast.”
Ace’s mouth quirked up. “Somehow I don’t think that is suitable for your fox. Maybe . . . a sparring contest? That would be just nice.”
Ace’s tone was light when he said that, but somehow, I detected sarcasm beneath his words. I wasn’t angry though. What he’s implying was true, anyway.
I chuckled softly. “And he’ll probably win hands down.”
Ace grinned widely. “I can see that. So, it’s a he?”
“Huh?” I frowned in confusion.
“Your fox. It’s a he?”
My brow cleared. “Oh yeah. Right.”
Ace shook his head, smiling as he did so. “No wonder he was so territorial over you. Say,” Here, his voice dropped to a mere whisper. “Is it possible that your fox has a tiny, weeny crush on you?”
I was stunned for a moment, although I knew that Ace was joking. I mean, Kilan was after all part human, and I can’t deny that little attraction I held for him, so naturally, I was a little shaken by Ace’s words.
I brushed Ace off and laughed. “Don’t be silly, you stupid asshole.”
Ace leaned back and smirked. “You know, it’s actually kind of hot when you call me names.”
“You’re sick.”
“Mm hmm.”
“You’re such a prick.”
“Thank you.” Here, he smiled warmly.
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t wanna waste my time on you.”
“Now, that hurts.”
I ignored him and refocused my attention back on Kilan. My eyes widened. Was that little scratches I see on the girl’s arms? And she’s still smiling! Although it was a somewhat bitter smile. Mother holy fuck! A smile slipped onto my face. Kilan was definitely a tough one.
I approached them, and split mouth girl started to talk before I could even open my mouth.
“Great, just great. You just dump your over-abrasive pet here and there you are flirting over there! You know what, I don’t want your money, just go. Like owner, like pet.” Even though she was spilling insults at me, her grin was still in place.
I grimaced and threw a few notes down on the table. “Sorry, I’m not one for free gains. You should go to the nurse, and at the same time, do something about that mouth of yours. It’s really ugly. Oh, and not to mention pathetic and fake. No wonder my pet dislikes you so much.” I scooped Kilan up and waltzed off before she could fire a comeback at me.
Ace chortled softly beside me. “There’s the bitch. But oh so hot.”
I didn’t even need to respond. Kilan growled and took a swipe at Ace. Ace jumped out of the way just in time. He clucked his tongue. “I better run. See you in a bit, Rae.” He threw a cautious glance towards Kilan before swiftly bending down and giving me a kiss on the cheek.
Ace winked as he walked away. I was a bit surprised by his action, but I’m actually more worried about Kilan. He seems like he’s about to burst in anger soon.
I hurried my pace to the front gate. Tenjo will be waiting by the gate for my parents to arrive. I bit my lip as I looked at the smouldering Kilan. “You know, I didn’t mean to do that, or maybe I did, but it was all in good fun.” I paused. “It was quite entertaining, actually. Don’t you think so?”
A glare was all I got in answer.
“Well, you did have fun smacking and scratching that horrible girl.” I mumbled.
I reached the front gate, and was dismay to find that my parents haven’t arrived yet. Kilan immediately started growling and doing all those funny fox sounds.
I wrinkled my brow in confusion. “What’s he doing?”
“He’s complaining.” Tenjo replied.
I gave him a baffled look.
“I quote: I’m getting out of this shithole. This is ridiculous. Why do I have to do this? Fuck the beauty contest.” Tenjo recited.
I let out an incredulous short laugh. “No, you can’t. Don’t be stupid.” I turned to Tenjo. “Whoa, so you know how to translate his fox language to English?”
Tenjo shrugged. “It’s an extra benefit, I guess.” He paused. “What happened?”
I waved a hand around. “Oh, it’s a long story. Kilan’s just being petty.” I glanced at Kilan before he could protest. “And besides, Mum’s buying you some . . . clothes, so you can enter the beauty contest decently.”
Kilan scoffed in response.
Just then, Dad’s car pulled up. I let out a sigh of relief. Mum jumped out of the car and excitedly shoved a bag at me. “Go, go dress Kilan up. It’s about to start, isn’t it?”
I sighed, and without another word, dragged Kilan away with me.

“Put your hands up, everybody! Come on, cheer! You’re going to be seeing the best of the best on this stage! And now, let’s welcome our first contestant of the beauty contest, Janet’s Macy. Macy is a . . .”
I stifled a yawn. Just what was so interesting about this? All they had to do was to perform a catwalk down the stage in their best form. Maybe some tricks here and there. And woo ha, all animals walk the same. It was, in other words, boring.
I stole a glance at Kilan and stifled a giggle. He was sulking. Haha. He was sulking. Sulking. Can you believe it? Somehow, Kilan and sulking just didn’t go hand in hand. I could understand though. The dog’s clothing that my mum bought for Kilan was simply hideous. Not hideous as in the really ugly hideous, but hideous as in that it was all lace and frills. It would be better if Kilan was a female, but alas, as fate had it, he was a male.
I picked Kilan up. “Hey, you know, it would be wonderful if you can wow the crowd outside and win the judges’ praise. If you win this beauty contest . . . I promise to do anything you want.” I said playfully.
Kilan’s navy orbs gleamed.
“And now, let’s welcome our third contestant, Raeanne’s Kilan!”
I straightened my back. “Come on, Kilan. It’s time for you to kick their ass.”
Still with the gleam in his eyes, Kilan stepped out onto the stage. I followed closely behind.
Kilan began his catwalk down the stage. There was nothing exciting about it, except that when it was almost to the end, he stood on two legs and twirled around like a ballet dancer, then he jumped up and made a perfect split. The crowd went crazy then.
I almost dropped my mouth in shock and surprise, but then I remembered that I was not supposed to do that.
“Whoa! WHAO! Look at that! Raeanne has such a unique pet! And it’s a fox! Can you guys believe it? Judges, I believe that there’s going to be some bonus points for that! Now, let’s interview Raeanne! Raeanne, why did you choose a fox as your pet?”
I put on a megawatt smile. “Kilan’s my birthday present when I was five. I didn’t exactly choose Kilan. It was my parents.”
“WOWEE! What cool parents! So, judging by the way Kilan is dressed, I’m guessing it’s a female fox?”
Kilan regarded me with cool eyes. I could see that Mum was anticipating my answer by the wide grin in her face. Well, I’ll give them an explosive answer then.
“Kilan’s a cross-dresser.” My smile remained intact.
The crowd cheered. Mum was giggling away while Dad was shaking his head in amusement. I saw Ace choking on his drink. Jazzy was high while Luke remained indifferent. It was amusing to see their reactions.
“A shocking revelation! Why, thank you, Raeanne, all the best to you and Kilan!”
I took a bow and went down the stage with Kilan in tow. Tenjo immediately appeared beside me. He chuckled. “Kilan wants me to tell you that you’re going to pay for making that remark.”
I batted my eyelashes innocently. “Oh, how do you know?”
“He just told me.” He gestured towards Kilan, who was staring at me coyly under those eyelashes.
I grinned. “Bring it on.”
In the distance, I saw Jazzy squeezing through the crowd towards us. My parents and Luke were just behind her.
“Rae!” Jazzy squealed breathlessly and hugged me. “You’re so going to win. And Kilan is so cute!” She gushed.
“Thanks.”
“Hey.”
I looked at Luke and gave him a friendly shove. “Hey.”
“Good job.” Luke gave Kilan a short pat on the head. Kilan frowned, but he didn’t try to reject Luke. I guess that’s a good thing.
“Seems like Kilan has grown slightly fond of you.” Dad commented, surprise showing in his face.
“Oh, everybody loves Luke.” I teased.
Luke ruffled my hair playfully and I stuck out my tongue at him.
Kilan let out a soft growl. Tenjo chuckled. “Don’t overdo it, guys. Kilan tends to get jealous easily.”
I might have blushed a bit when Tenjo said that, but luckily, the auditorium is quite dark, and hopefully, nobody noticed it. Besides, what are the chances that Kilan will get jealous over me and Luke? Not likely.
“Hey guys, it’ll be awhile before the results will be announced, so why don’t we go grab a bite first? I’m pretty hungry.” I said, trying to change the subject.
Everyone agreed, and we head over to the cafeteria. I thought I will finally have some food and rest, but man, I was so wrong.
