Boy and Beast

Wind hums a savage tune
That thrums about his
Head and slows but never ceases, like
Battle drums and horn. Their
Voices echoing, entangled in the
Loose-hanging vines –
Serpents that hang limp and useless around him
Long hair that sticks to the sweat on his face
Thunder’s mumble turns to dull rumble then bang
White whips lash the melancholy sky
Make the red knife white for a half a moment and
Throw their lights across his narrowed
Eyes. He sees a teddy bear half buried in the mud
He uncurls his fingers and with
Dirt-rimmed fingernails, gathers up the pathetic creature and
Throws it over arched back and taut shoulders that
Move with strangled ease
Bended knees and outspread hands, white spiders
Creep and crawl, make move this scrawny body
With rugged posture, suddenly still though
Buzz and buzz drone in his ears
Harass him with their savage tune
Boy and beast become one
