Chapter One

Kaos watched as his sister, Mallie, headed out of the library and down the hall towards the registration building. Kaos had only met Mallie’s friend Neena, but had never met the other two. What did he care anyways? He had his own problems to worry about.

Suddenly Kaos heard a loud ringing tone coming from his backpack. He unzipped the top and took out a small cell phone. Pushing the green button on his phone he stopped the ringing and put the phone to his ear.

“Hello?” He spoke mellowly into the phones speaker. A kind hearted loud voice spoke immediately into his ear causing him to back lightly away from the phone.

“Hi honey,” His mother spoke as though she hadn’t heard from him in years. “Did grandma get you to the academy okay?”

“Yeah, Mom,” Kaos replied reluctantly.

“Good,” She responded. “Is your sister with you at the moment? I want to talk to her.”

“No, she just walked out a few seconds ago,” Kaos told his mother without the least sign of remorse for his sister not being there. Her and his mother were exactly the same. They were big talkers and they loved to yell a lot.

“Well, you tell her when she gets back that Mommy called and that she loves her so much,” His mother said in a mother-like voice. “Also tell her to give me a call once she’s gotten settled. Have you gotten your dorms yet?”

“No. We won’t get our dorms for another hour because the academy is still new,” Kaos replied calmly.

“True,” His mother paused for a moment, which seemed very odd to him since she usually had something to say. “Well I better let you go. Don’t forget to talk to Mallie for me. I love you Kaos.”

“Bye, Mom,” Kaos replied stiffly. He wasn’t about to tell his mother he loved her over the phone.

“Kaos, say I love you,” His mother demanded. Kaos’s nose wrinkled. “Come on honey, say it.”

“MOM, I’m not gonna say it here,” Kaos replied in an annoyed tone. “There’s someone sitting in the library.”

“KAOS, SAY IT OR YOUR COMING HOME TOMORROW!” His mother’s voice seemed almost monster-like. Kaos groaned and leaned back in his chair.

“I love you, Mom,” Kaos said reluctantly and after doing so quickly turned the phone off without listening to anything else his mom might say. His eyes seemed a little enraged, but his face was as red as a beet.

“Sir, please calm down,” The registration lady tried to reason with Nash, but he wasn’t giving in. “There is absolutely nothing I can do.”

“You wouldn’t leave a poor defenseless animal like this out in the cold would you?” Nash inquired as he held out Luna in front of the registration ladies face.

“Yes, but you see it’s clearly summer so you wouldn’t be leaving her out in the cold,” The lady

protested back.

“YEAH BUT IT’S THE PRINCIPLE OF THE MATTER!” Nash yelled back in reply.

“What seems to be the problem here?” A familiar voice was heard from behind them. “Don’t tell me you guys are going to this academy.”

“Mallie!” Neena ran up to the slightly taller teenage girl. “How come you’re here already?”

“Well, Grams decided she’d get a job here since it pays a lot more than at the conservation center,” Mallie replied as she hugged her best friend, Neena. “So what’s up with you guys?”

“Well, we have a bit of a problem,” Neena stated. Nash broke into the conversation.

“Yeah! They say it’s a requirement to have a license for your animals,” Nash huffed.

“That’s true,” Mallie replied with a smile. “But don’t worry. I’ll get you guys licenses.”

Both Nash and Neena’s faces lit up as smiles spread across them. They’re problem was solved and they could now bring their animals to the academy.

“Thanks, Mallie,” Neena said thankfully.

“But how are you able to get licenses that quickly?” Aaron questioned.

“We’ll just say the animals are owned by Grams and there should be no problems at all,” Mallie said with a wink of her silvery eye.

“So, what have you been up to lately?” Aaron began a conversation with Mallie while Nash and Neena signed up at the desk. “I haven’t seen you since last winter or perhaps it was spring.”

“Oh, not much,” Mallie replied as she kept contact with his lime green eyes, trying hard to block out the loud sounds of people in the registration building. “It looks as though Neena and Nash haven’t changed a bit. Except Nash seems a bit louder than the last time I saw him.”

“Nah, if you hung out with Nash as much as I did last winter you would have known how loud he can be. Especially when he’s mad.” Aaron replied with a laugh and Mallie laughed with him.

“Alright, next,” The registration lady called out. It was Neena’s turn as she prepared to step forward with Horus on her shoulder. Unexpectedly, someone walked just in front of Neena and took her place in line.

His figure stood much taller than hers and his hair, though light, came out at the sides making just the back of his appearance intimidating.

“Hey pal!” Nash yelled aloud to the guy who had cut in front of Neena. “She was there before you!”

The young teenage boy turned his head and looked straight at Nash. His face made him even more intimidating than before as he gave an icy look with his lavender eyes which did nothing much to calm his appearance. The boy said nothing, but calmly, without making a scene walked away from the registration desk, his eyes turned away from Nash’s as Nash continued to watch him closely. He than stood just behind Neena and waited for his turn to sign up.

“Thank you,” Neena replied before resuming her spot at the desk. The light haired boy looked at her calmly with his lavender-like eyes. He could have cared less if she was there or not. He hadn’t even seen her there. So why had the guy with her gone crazy?

Neena finished her registration and walked with her friend out of the registration building and into Spirit Guardios academies campus. “What was up with that guy?” Nash asked Neena as she walked beside him. The boy at the desk huffed quietly at their remark of him and moved towards the registration desk.

“Name?” The lady asked kindly despite his intimidating appearance.

The boy breathed in and out as though it were a chore for him to speak to other people. “Saith Colbin.”

The gang of four friends made their way onto the beautiful campus of Spirit Guardios Academy.

It’s appearance was truly lovely and new looking. Several long grass patches could be found every so often along the sides of buildings and paths that could lead you from the academies main hall to the near by forest, pools and even the vast ocean that lay outstretched near the academy.

“Wow!” Neena yelled as she ran ahead of everyone and stopped abruptly to look at the compelling view of the ocean. “It’s so beautiful! Look you guys!”

The other three made there way towards where Neena was glancing and were immediately overcome by the loveliness of the scenery before them.

“Whoa, I hope I get to ride a few waves while I’m here,” Aaron said as he looked out at the ocean in amazement.

“You surf, Aaron!?” Nash was surprised.

“Yeah, I took a few classes when I used to live in Australia,” He replied. His Australian accent clearly came out as he spoke.

“Great, then you’ll have fun when they teach us wind surfing,” Mallie told them as she looked at Aaron.

“Yes!” Aaron cheered. “I get to show you blokes what surfing is all about!”

“Are you guys talking about wind surfing?” Asked a boy from behind them. He seemed very small and hardly old enough to be in the academy. His face seemed young and his hair was a bright blonde color. He seemed to be tired out and stood hunched over as he breathed heavily. “I..love...wind surfing!” He said between huge gasps for air.

“Cool. What’s your name, kid?” Aaron asked as he held out a hand to the boy.

“Marky,” He replied as he regained his breath and shook Aaron’s hand. “You’ll have to show me what you can do.”

“Of course. Same to you.” Aaron replied with a smile. “So what were you running from?”

“My brother,” Marky stated. Everyone looked at him in shock.

“Your brothers that bad?” Mallie asked as though she had no idea what his was talking about.

“You don’t know my brother,” Marky replied with a worried look on his face.

“Oh Marky!” Called out a voice from far off in the distance. “Where are you little brother?! Come here so I can give you a wedgie!”

Marky’s already worried face became even more worried and scared of the fact that his brother was coming nearer. “I need to hide!” He yelled frantically. The gang watched as he jumped in a large bushy hedge and hid silently. His brother soon came running down the path and stopped just in front of the gang.

He was quite tall compared to his brother Marky and had very dark brown hair compliment with black glasses he wore over his brown eyes. He wore a pair of denim shorts and a yellow shirt with big red letters saying “Joker”.

“Have you guys seen my brother around here? He’s about this tall,” He placed his hand at waist height to indicate his brothers size. “He’s got blonde hair and brown eyes. And his name is Marky.”

“Oh yeah, we–

“Sh!” Nash interrupted Mallie. “Nope, haven’t seen him.”

“Okay, thanks,” He said as ran forward and waved bye to them.

Once the coast was clear, Marky leaped out of the hedges and brushed off the excess leaves from his hair and clothing.

“Thanks you guys,” Marky said thoughtfully. “Lucas is always doing stuff like that when mom isn’t around.”

“I helped mostly. But Mallie almost spilled the beans!” Nash turned to Mallie who could only smile at her own stupidity.

“That’s okay,” Marky said with a smile. “At least my brother didn’t find me.”

“There you are Marky,” Marky nearly jumped 5 feet high at the sound of his brothers voice. “I’ve been looking for you. It’s time for your long awaited wedgie.”

“NO, PLEASE LUCAS!!!” Marky pleaded as he backed away. Nash was about to step in and help the poor kid, but instead Marky took off running at top speed. “NOOO!!!!”

“You won’t escape me Marky!” Lucas yelled as he ran after his younger brother. “Now that mom isn’t here I’m gonna give you a wedgie every day!”

Nash watched as the two brothers ran throughout the campus. He wished he had a brother. Although he used to have a teacher who was like a brother to him. ‘Oh well. At least I don’t have to deal with wedgies,’ he thought to himself.

The rest of the group watched in horror as Lucas finally caught up to Marky and began giving him the worst atomic wedgie any of them had ever seen.

“Owe,” Aaron said as he squinted his eyes in disbelief of the weird yet hilarious sight he saw. “That’s gonna hurt in the morin’.”
