Chapter One:
Adrianne:
“You cannot possibly feel calm after Mr. Duarte’s remark about your sleeping in his class! He can get you suspended, Andie!” my best friend Jasmine Moreau, exclaimed as she tried to keep up with me after Physics class (and our last class for the day! Hallelujah!).
I sighed, rolled my eyes and crossed my arms across my chest. “Jasmine, you need to chill. Firstly, Mr. Duarte can’t possibly give me suspension because I have the highest grade in his class. Secondly, I babysit his kids three nights every other week,” I argued, getting a hold of her before she hyperventilates. Jasmine tended to worry over the littlest things.
“But—”
“No buts, Jas! I’ll be fine! Sheesh, it’s not like you’ve never slept in class before,” I reminded her, smirking. Jasmine stuck out her tongue and I laughed. At least she wasn’t worrying anymore.
“Well, anyway, are you going to Krista’s party on Friday?” she asked, opening her locker we stopped in front of them.
I shrugged and started dialing my locker combination, a look of pure disgust on my face. “You know that Krista’s my favorite person in the whole world… How can I pass her up?” I answered, sarcasm dripping out of my voice. I made a face and Jasmine burst out laughing.
“You should really hold the sarcasm, Adrianne,” she told me, pulling out her calculus book out of her locker.
“Why should I?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. She looked past my shoulder and smirked. Sensing that someone was behind me, I turned around and pasted a sweet smile on my face.
Sure enough, the great Krista Ritchie was staring at me, a look of displeasure on her perfectly pampered face.
“Hi, Krista… My, aren’t we looking quite fresh today! When did you get your face lift done?” I asked, smiling sweetly at her. I could hear Jasmine trying to suppress her laugh from beside me.
Krista raised an eyebrow, flipped her blond hair over her shoulder and put her hand on her hip. “Very funny, Moore. Tell me, did you buy your clothes from a garage sale or from Salvation Army?” she replied, smirking at me. Her ladies-in-waiting laughed… though they weren’t very convincing.
“That was weak Krista, even for you,” Jasmine commented, smiling slyly. Krista scoffed but it was clear Jasmine hit her right on the punch line. One for Jasmine and me; none for Miss Bitch.
“Anyway, let’s put that aside for now,” she started, a phony smile on her face. I raised an eyebrow “What do you want?”
Krista smiled evilly. “We all know hat you’re friends with Adam and I was wondering if you could ask him to go to my party this Friday,” she said, giving me her “Please-help-me” look.
I wanted to vomit.
“Why don’t you ask him yourself?” I retorted, a scowl on her face. Jasmine had a scowl on her face too. We both knew that Krista has had a thing for my other best friend, Adam Hunter, ever since… well, forever. He never gave him the time and day though… one reason why I loved him so much.
You see, Adam has been my friend for as long as I can remember. He’s funny, sweet, understanding and friendly, so everyone loved him. Krista thought that she could control me, she would get Adam but alas, she never got me to be nice to her nor get Adam’s attention.
“He won’t listen to me! Why don’t you ask him?!” Krista exclaimed, stomping her foot like a four-year old kid. “Brat,” I heard Jasmine whisper and I agreed.
“Ask me what?” Adam asked out of nowhere, a look of curiosity on his face. He stepped away from Krista and nudged me. “Hey, icebox,” he greeted me, smiling sweetly. I grinned. “Hi, Pookie.”
“You know, I never really understood why you call each other that,” Vincent Fargo, Adam’s best friend and Jasmine’s long time boyfriend, said. Jasmine laughed and kissed him on the cheek. “Oh, hey, Krista.”
Krista smiled in greeting and then licked lips in a way she thought was seductive, just as she stepped closer to Adam.
It was disgusting. Nauseatingly disgusting.
Adam, however, was oblivious and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. It made me feel warm. Very warm.
I liked it. (And that fact that Krista was turning green over us was enjoyable too.)
“So, Krista, weren’t you going to ask Adam something?” Jasmine teased. Krista opened and closed her mouth like a goldfish. Ha. She looked stupider than ever.
“Well?” Adam asked, raising an eyebrow. He was tapping his foot… ah, what an impatient man my best friend is.
“I… I was wondering if you would… go to my party this Friday…” she said, regaining her posture and twirling a strand of her blond hair. I rolled my eyes and waited for Adam to say no.
Which he didn’t do but instead looked like he was thinking it over. Weird.
“Okay I’ll go if Adrianne and my friends get to go too,” he offered, shocking Jasmine and me. “WHAT?!”
Krista, on the other hand was in heaven. “That’s fine by me! Oh, my God, we are so going to have fun this Friday!” she squealed. Her cronies squealed as well. Airheads.
“Anyway, I have to go. But I’ll see you next Friday, okay?” she exclaimed, a goofy smile on her face. Adam grinned and winked slyly. Krista giggled again (a bit hysterical, I think) and walked down the hallway. Adam took a deep breath in relief, and then he rolled his eyes and shook his head. I stifled a laugh.
Once she was gone, I burst out laughing. Jasmine and Vincent followed suit.
“What a way to lead a girl on, Pookie!” I exclaimed in between laughs. He shrugged and smiled at me. “I’d do it just for you, Icebox.”
“Anyway, wanna go out for pizza?” he asked.
“Are you paying?” I inquired, batting my eyes at him. He rolled his eyes.
“If I have to.”
“YES!” I cried, pumping a fist into the air.
“Well, you guys have fun, alright? We have a date,” Vincent proclaimed, grabbing Jasmine’s hand. Jasmine simply blushed and nodded.
“See you tomorrow, Jas!” I called and she waved. I watched them walk out of the gate, hand in hand. Seeing them together like that made me feel jealous. Probably cause I’ve never found a guy to love (or better yet, satisfy my needs). I mean, Adam’s come pretty close but he doesn’t like me in that way… so…
“I’m jealous of them,” Adam declared, as if knew was I was thinking. I wrinkled my brow in curiosity, “Huh? What do you mean?” I nudged him a bit.
He looked down at me, a strange look in his blue-grey eyes. A shiver ran down my spine and my insides began heating up. I gulped. What the hell was that about?
“Nothing,” he replied, still staring down at me. My lungs weren’t functioning correctly. I drew in a deep breath and I felt my heart race…
He looked away and I began to breathe normally again. “Nothing at all.”
Adam:
We sat on one of the booths near the windows and I just stared at her a little longer. She was looking for Ester (the waitress) so that we could order. Her long brown hair was loose and her grey-green eyes were sparkling. I breathed long and hard.
God, I was a goner.
God, I suck. Sorry for the short chapter. This was a story I abandoned years ago. But with the insistence from my cousin, I decided to bring it back! So please, read on and enjoy! Don’t forget to Read and Review! Reviews with crit are fine because it lets me know what you want. :)
