Author’s Note: After a long hiatus, I’ve come back to update a chapter. I just finished watching a movie called Windstruck and I got inspiration to update this story. I hope you like this… because, this is the chapter where Adam talks to Ryan about him and Adrienne. Brace yourselves!
Adam
“You said you wanted to talk to me?”
I nodded, staring down at the glass in front of me. I don’t know how and why I ordered anything from the bartender that night but I guess I felt like I would need it for what I was about to do. I looked up to see Ryan taking a seat on a stool next to me and motioning for Fred (the bartender).
Guess he needed a drink too.
“So,” he started, scratching his ear before looking at me, “What’s on your mind?”
I raised an eyebrow at him. “What do you think is on my mind?”
He shook his head. “Oh, I’m thinking you’ve wanted to break my neck ever since I started showing signs of interest towards your best friend.”
Bingo, Carter! “You mean, towards Vincent? God, Ryan, I would have never took you as bisexual.”
He rolled his eyes at me, but he had a grin on his face. “Right. Cut the crap, Adam. I meant, Adrienne.”
“Straight to the point, huh?”
“Well, what can we do? If we keep sidetracking like that, we might as well just forget about this confrontation.”
He looked at me expectantly. “So, let me ask again. What’s on your mind?”
“When we were kids… you had a crush on her too, huh?”
Ryan nodded. “We both did. But you were closer to her so I never tried anything. I figured you two would end up together eventually so I never said or did anything.”
“Disappointed it took me so long?”
“Yeah, a little.”
I chuckled. “And now you’ve got the girl.”
“Only ‘cause you gave up too quickly.” His reply was faint, I almost didn’t catch it. I swallowed and tried not to get my temper up.
“How are you and—” My voice caught for a moment and I coughed. “Adrienne? How has things been for you two?”
He shrugged, looking thoughtful for a moment. “We’ve been doing great. She’s writing a lot of songs nowadays, and despite being kind of sketchy… she’s doing good in her music.”
I nodded, smiling slightly. That was good hear. I took a sip from my drink…
“And she’s a damn well good kisser too.”
I spit out the liquid in my mouth. I coughed several times. Ryan just sat and shook his head at me.
“Got you attention, didn’t it?”
I nodded again, glaring at him. He just laughed and took a sip from his glass.
“Look, Adam… we both love her. I know I do, and I’m positive that you still do too.”
“I’m with Laila.” I told him bluntly.
“Yeah. I know that. But you sure aren’t acting like it right now.” He gave me a pointed look. I had to sigh… I guess everyone could see right through me.
“You’re being unfair, you know. Not only to Laila, but also to yourself… and Adrienne.”
“Don’t say it like I don’t know it, will you?” I snapped, glaring at him.
He laughed at me and clapped me on the back. “Like I said, you sure don’t look like you do.” He took another sip. “Adrienne misses you. You’re her bestfriend.”
“Right. Best friend… sure doesn’t seem like it.”
“That’s because you’re asking too much from her.”
I looked at him confused.
He sighed. “You wanted to be more… and you were too impatient. Imagine being in her shoes for once – stuck between the possibility of losing a lifelong friendship for a relationship that might or might not work.”
“Who died and made you Dr. Phil?”
“Shut it, Adam. I’m just telling you what I think.”
“Why should you care? I know that she loves you. I heard her song and everything after.”
Ryan nodded. “So you were the one who slammed the door.” He grinned. “Yeah, but you did hear the first part right? How she had a hard time letting you go?”
He leaned closer to the table. “Maybe you should go talk to her. And not to me.” He said, staring at his glass’s contents.
“Why should that matter now? She’s in love with you. She’s freaking dating you, and I’m dating someone else. Why should I talk to her about that now?”
Ryan shrugged. “Because you still love her. And as much as I’d like to agree on what you just said, I can’t let you or Adrienneto forget about the connection between you two.”
He sighed. “I love her, Adam. And I want to make her happy. So please, for both our sakes… fix your problems with one another and make up.”
Ryan stood up and patted me on the back. “No one should lose a friend over something like this.”
“Well, I already did lose someone over this.” I looked up at him with a dark look. “Two people actually.”
“I lost my best friend because I loved her…”
I stared down at my glass again. “And to make matters worst, I lost her to the guy I thought would’ve helped me out when I asked.”
Ryan shook his head. “I gave you almost six years to make a move. But you never did anything.”
“You never tried, Adam.”
