Guardian Stars

Prologue

It all started when I had been in my mother's womb. My mother, Diana Strawn, had always loved astronomy and any other subject related with the cosmos. The stars fascinated her and soon, I inherited her love for the stars.

It was that night in December, 1986 when my pregnant mother had been sitting on an arm chair. She was knitting baby socks when she looked up and found a streak of light passing through the brilliant night sky. It was Halley's Comet, a comet that was visible from the earth, only once in seventy-six years.

My mother smiled at her luck and talked to me. Even though I was still in her womb, she knew that I could hear her and understand her. A baby could always hear its mother from anywhere in the world.

Her voice was the gentlest I had ever heard. Every note in her voice was angelic. She said, "My little girl, I will name you, Halley. Do you like the name?"

My father told me later, that I kicked her in response.

Today, I am seventeen and I miss her. She died in labor but she continues to live on in the sky amongst the stars. If I feel like talking to her, all I need to do is bring the telescope to my balcony and gaze at the night sky. It's not that difficult to find her amongst the galaxies. She is always the brightest one.

I shifted the telescope while trying to focus on a particular set of five special stars.. They never changed position in the sky and always shone right above my house. I smiled as I found them twinkling brightly and were sparkling blue, tonight. These were my favorite stars. Ever since I had been little, they had been watching out for me and have led me in the right direction.

Who were they?

Sirius, Rigel, Castor, Mirfak and Dubhe.

They were my five guardian angels and I loved them all.
