Chapter 6: To Hell With You and All Your Friends
“So how did Jenn Packwood ever get your phone number in the first place?” I asked Adam as we sat watching TV in my living room the next day.
“She said she got it from Jayden or something,” he sighed.
“And how is that possible? Jayden hates the bitch,” I said. “Probably more than I do.”
“That’s doubtful, but who knows. I’m not worried about it. I think I made it pretty clear that I didn’t want to hang out with her ever again. She’s a ditz,” Adam yawned.
I laughed and laid down on the couch while Adam was sprawled on the loveseat. “That’s an understatement,” I smiled.
Adam grinned and shrugged. There really wasn’t any more to say about the bitch. We had this conversation a million times before and each time we always came to the conclusion that Jenn Packwood wasn’t worth talking about anymore, so we’d drop the whole conversation. It usually lasted until she did something stupid again and we’d be right where we left off. “So when does Jay get home?” he asked, changing the subject.
“No clue. His mom said she’d have him call me when he got in. That was around noon. She said she didn’t expect him until at least 2:00.”
Adam nodded and yawned as the phone rang. “Maybe that’s him now,” he said.
I shrugged and glanced at the clock: 3:30. My dad would be home any minute. I reached over and grabbed the phone off the side table. “Hello?” I answered.
“Rachel?” a male voice chuckled.
I grinned, “Jayden?”
“Sup bitch ass?” I don’t think I realized how much I missed this kid until he said that.
“Not much man. What are you up to?” Adam watched me with a small smile on his lips.
I grinned at him. “Not much. I’ve been home for about twenty minutes and my mom just now told me you called earlier. So what is up with you my friend?”
“Not a damn thing. You wanna come hang out?”
“Hell yeah. I’ll see you in a few minutes,” he chuckled before hanging up.
“Jayden’s coming over,” I grinned, resting the phone back on it’s cradle.
“I gathered that much,” Adam smiled.
“Shut up, smart ass,” I grinned.
“Smart ass? I think not.”
“I think so.”
“You know what, Source?” he asked, sitting up.
“No, Lincoln, I don’t know. Why don’t you inform me?” I asked sitting up also.
“You’re going down, Source,” he said pointing at me with each word. “You’re going down to China Town.”
I smiled at him as the doorbell rang. “Jayden’s here,” I grinned, jumping up. Jayden lived two houses down on my side of the street, closer to Adam’s house.
“I got it,” Adam jumped up and raced me to the front door.
“Jerk,” I yelled chasing after him. We slid across the hard wood floor in our socks and crashed into the door, falling to the floor on top of each other, laughing.
“Dumb ass,” Adam laughed, lying back on the floor.
“Shut up, man,” I laughed as the front door slowly opened.
“Anyone home?” a male asked walking in the house. Jayden Tarry. He was tall, dark, and handsome. Had short black spiky hair and stunning emerald green eyes. He was lean and muscular. He wore a green Senses Fail shirt and baggy blue jeans. “What’s up guys?” he chuckled, staring down at us.
“Jayden!” I grinned, as I scrambled off the ground.
“Hey bitch ass,” he grinned, wrapping me in a hug.
“I missed you man,” I grinned as we let go of each other.
“Me too. Well look at what we have here. Adam Lincoln,” Jayden grinned as Adam stood up. “When the hell did you get in town?” he asked as they slapped hands and did their manly hug.
“Yesterday. How’ve ya been?” Adam asked, as they broke apart.
“I’ve been good. It’s great to see you two together again. It’s been too long,” Jayden said closing the front door.
“I know,” Adam said. “So now that Jay’s here, let’s go, I’m starving.”
“Oh man, me too. I haven’t eaten all day,” Jayden groaned, tilting his head back and holding his stomach. His eyebrow ring glistened in the sunlight. “I could really go for a burger at Becky’s,” he grinned.
I smiled, “Me too, let’s go,” I said pushing the boys out of the way and opening the front door.
“Damn bitch. Some things never change around here, do they?” Jayden asked, smiling.
I laughed and shrugged. “I guess not.”
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Adam asked.
I raised an eyebrow at him. “No, what?”
“Maybe shoes and keys?” Jayden said.
I blushed and shrugged, “Maybe.”
I walked into the living room with Adam and we quickly put on our shoes. I shut off the TV and grabbed my keys off the counter on our way of the house.
“It’s just like old times,” Jayden grinned as he sat in the backseat of my black beat up Honda Civic.
“I know. I like it though. I miss this stuff,” Adam said, leaning back in the passenger seat.
“Me too,” Jayden and I said together.
It was hard to imagine that I went so long with out seeing even him. Adam was understandable because he was on tour, but Jayden was just at school. Though he did go to Harvard in Boston and I went to Columbia in Chicago.
As we sat around Becky’s eating burgers, well me and Jayden were, Adam was eating a veggie burger, I couldn’t help but laugh at when Jayden was telling a funny story from school. He made Harvard sound more exciting than I thought possible. Sure it was all smart people, but Jayden had away of making it sound like one of Adam’s crazy tours.
“So Rach, how’d that intern go this year?” Jayden asked, suddenly changing the subject.
“Intern?” Adam asked.
“Oh yeah. I forgot to tell you. I was interning at Victory Records,” I grinned. “It was awesome. They asked me to come work for them once I got back to Chicago. I can’t wait. It’s going to be awesome. I’m going to be working there with my friend Kenny.”
“That’s awesome. Maybe we’ll get to see each other more then,” Adam grinned, picking up a French fry.
I nodded, “Oh yeah.”
“So Lincoln, how long are you in town for?” Jayden asked.
“Um, about a month, then I go to New York for a week before we head out on Summer Fling,” Adam replied.
“Damn,” Jayden said.
“I know, it’s crazy,” Adam said as the door opened and a group of blonde girls walked in.
I looked over to find no one but Jenn Packwood standing within the clutter. I rolled my eyes and glanced at Adam and Jayden who hadn’t noticed yet. At least that hadn’t changed. They never were the ones to notice a bunch of annoying giggling girls come walking into that place. They were pretty oblivious to most girls, especially when I was around. “So Jay, what’s the lady status?” I asked.
He smiled softly and shrugged, “I guess there’s some one back in Boston,” he said, nonchalantly.
I let out a small giggle at his shyness when it came to the ladies, well serious relationships that is, “Oh yeah? And what’s her name?” I asked.
“Taegan,” he replied.
“Oh really? And how long has this been going on?” Adam asked, jumping right in to help me interrogate Jayden.
“About six months. She’s awesome. I really think this is it for me guys, I think she’s the one,” he confessed.
My mouth dropped open, “Jayden Tarry is done with his man whorish ways?” I asked in disbelief. That was impossible. For as long as I knew him, he was always toying with the ladies. I think I was the only one of his girlfriends that he didn’t cheat on, and I think that was only because we were best friends before we dated.
Adam just stared at Jayden in shock. “Are you sure about this man?” he asked.
Jayden blushed, “Pretty sure,” he replied.
I grinned, “Our little Jayden is in love,” I said in a singsong voice.
Adam grinned while Jayden blushed.
“Who would have thought it’d be Jay to beat us to the ‘love thing’?” Adam asked.
I smiled and shrugged, “I thought it would have been you, honestly,” I told Adam.
“I thought it’d be you, Rach,” Jayden said.
“Me too,” Adam agreed.
“Now why would you think that?” a female voice asked behind us.
I turned to find none other than Jenn Packwood standing there. “Can we help you with something, Packwood?” I asked.
“Like you’d be able to help me with anything,” she smirked, flipping her blonde hair.
I rolled my eyes, “Why don’t you just get out of here. No one wants to you here,” Jayden glared.
“But that’s a lie. Adam wants me here,” she said walking toward him.
“I really don’t think he does,” I said, glancing at Adam.
“Aw Adam, tell them you want me to stay,” she said, running her fingers through his hair.
“I think you should leave, Jenn. You had your fun yesterday,” Adam said.
Her face fell before she smiled again, “Oh you don’t mean that.”
“Yes, I do. Please leave,” he said moving her hand out of his hair.
“Whatever,” she said, rolling her eyes and walking away with a flip of her hair.
“Some things never change,” Adam sighed.
“So what happened yesterday?” Jayden asked.
“Nothing really. Jenn got my cell number some how and called me, wanting to hang out. So I told her to come over to my house thinking Rach would be there too, but she left,” Adam explained.
“Well, she hates the bitch. Did you expect her to stay?” Jayden asked. I was glad someone other than me was telling Adam of my hatred for Jenn Packwood. God knows how many times I’ve tried telling Adam but he always just ignored it and said we should try being friends with her, though most of the time it was his idea to get her to leave. Well it used to be anyway.
“Yeah, so Jenn came over and we talked, well she talked. She kept trying to get with me and kept talking about how much she loves my band and just a bunch of bullshit. I made some lame excuse to get her to leave after about ten minutes.”
I was staring out the window watching the wind blow the leaves as the boys spoke. “So I talked to Cody the other day. He’s coming home soon,” Jayden said, changing the subject.
Cody Michaels. He was another childhood friend. He lived on Dekker Street his entire life like Adam and me. He lived across the street from me. He was always the comedian, but then again all these guys were.
“Oh really, what’s he been up to?” I asked, turning from the window.
“Not much, just doing the school thing like the rest of us…well everyone except Adam that is.”
Adam just smiled and continued eating. It was obvious he didn’t know how to respond to that. He knew we loved him and his band and didn’t mean anything by the comment. Sometimes he seemed almost jealous though, when we’d mention school. Like around last Christmas when we were all home for the holidays Cody, Jayden, and I were talking about our classes in school and Adam seemed almost jealous cause we were all worried about our grades.
