Prologue
A gentle feather brushed past her face as Kioku left the blazing building behind her. She turned to face her house which had been engulfed in a mass of fiery hot flames. Her blue eyes filled with a glowing hue of crimson and gold as she watched at the devastating sight before her. But despite the chaos of the scene, Kioku’s thoughts fell upon how she had escaped the terrors of the fire and made it outside. An angel was the only possibility of how the miracle had occurred, how she had escaped and survived that night.
Kioku tapped her pencil against the desk she sat at. Her mind now shifted from it’s thoughts of the past to the drawing she was working on.
“Kioku,” Her named mysteriously echoed through the small room. Kioku looked around to find who was calling her, but couldn’t see a soul.
Kioku was just about to turn her head back to her work, but her eyes caught a glimpse of something soft. A fluffy, white feather fell from the air and hit the ground lightly. Who had called her name?
Inner Beauty
Chapter One - Guardian Angel
Year 50 BC, Ancient Rome
Walking slowly on a small dirt road a small family drew nearer to the priests temple. Each one of them had on a long set of clothing for the occasion of the cold weather. The wind had been blowing roughly all that week and today was no different.
“Mommy, where are we going?” 6 year old Kera. Her long brunette hair brushing past her blue eyes.
Her mother looked down at her with her dark blue eyes and smiled warmly, but behind their warmth her eyes showed a sign of sadness. “Were going to temple.”
Kera smiled and took a hold of her mothers arm. She didn’t mind going to temple, even if it was hard to stand still while praying. Just as long as her mother, father and older sister.
They entered the temple with a look of solemness, all except Kera. She was too interested in the size of the cross around the priests neck.
How was he able to hold it up? Kera wondered as she looked at the cross intently. It’s size bigger than her head.
“Welcome, welcome,” He greeted as they walked inside. “I trust you’ve brought a virgin girl to repent for you sins.”
“Yes,” The father replied as he took a hold of Kera and brought her forth to the priest. “Our daughter, Kera.”
Kera looked up at the priest, he was big and his hair short unlike her fathers shoulder length brunette hair. His hair was the same color as her fathers and his clothes long and bulgy looking.
“Good, good,” The priest replied with a smile as he reached for Kera. “Your sins shall now be forgiven.”
Kera looked back at her mother who was crying for her daughter. She didn’t understand what was going on.
“Goodbye, Kera,” Her mother called to her a she exited the temple.
“Wait mommy!” Kera yelled. She tried to follow her mother, but the priest was holding her back.
“You’ll be living with me now,” The priests told her in an arguable voice. “Now come along with me.”
He took her down a small hallway and led her into a room with a bed, a desk and a single chair. Kera wondered why she had to stay with the priest, but she was to scared to ask him.
The priest shut the door of the room after he had informed her she was to sleep there for the rest of her life. Kera looked out the small window by her bed. She watched as the sun formed high in the sky and the birds chirped in the trees. She smiled as it warmed her face. Suddenly a chilling wind blew her hair back and sent chills down her back. Kera quickly drew the curtains by her window and turned to her bed. She fell face first on top of it and began sobbing. She didn’t want to live at the temple. Why did mommy have to give her away for her sins?
Kera felt a gentle rub on her shoulder. Was it her mother? Kera turned around, but no one was there.
“Hello?” Kera asked in her soft voice. She turned her head back to the bed, but before her head could hit the surface of it a sweet angelic voice called out to her.
“Kera, Kera don’t cry,” Kera turned around and found her eyes met with the most beautiful gold eyes she had ever seen. Kera fell back on the bed in fear. “Fear not, I am your guardian angel.”
“My guardian angel?” Kera repeated as the angel took a seat by her on the bed.
“Yes, and I will help and guide you through whatever trials you may have in your life.”
Present Day
“Hey Wings? Are you listening to me?” Kioku asked as she waved her hands in front of the angel standing beside her.
“Wha!?” The Guardian Angel looked down at Kioku in a daze. “What was that, Kioku?”
“Were you daydreaming Guardian Angel?” She inquired with a smile on her face as she leaned back in her chair.
“Just thinking back,” He replied as his eyes gazed into hers. “Now what is it you need help with?”
“I’m really not getting this math stuff,” Kioku looked down at her text book as she tapped the pencil to the page. The Guardian Angel smiled and shrugged as though he had no clue of what she was talking about. Kioku pulled at her hair and groaned. “Come on Wings, you’re suppose to help me out. That’s what guardian angels do, right?”
“Correction, we help guide you in the right path,” Wings replied.
“Well why can’t you help guide me to the right answers?” Kioku pleaded with a smile. Wings tried his hardest not to laugh at her remark of rebellion.
“Perhaps you need a tutor,” He inquired as he rested his arm against her chair.
“Or perhaps I need to acquaint myself with a little thing we all know and love!” Kioku said in a happy tone as she lifted herself from her desk.
“And what is it exactly that we all “know and love”?” Wings asked as his eyes followed Kioku.
“The TV!” She replied as she plopped herself in front of the screen and pressed the power button. After flipping through the channels she finally came to one that seemed very interesting.
“I suggest you focus on you homework and not the box with moving pictures before you,” Wings offered as she placed a hand on Kioku’s shoulder.
“Yeah, will just because your suggesting it doesn’t mean I have to follow you suggestion.” Kioku continued to watch the television and the news story that seemed both scary and yet inspirational at the same time.
“She miraculously survived the car crash with only a few injuries, some minor, some major.” The news castor reported as video footage of the crash scene came into view. “She was the only survivor in the crash. Both her parents died instantly from the impact.”
“Wow, that’s sounds pretty lucky,” Kioku inquired as she watched. But Wings knew that this was in no way the work of luck. This could only be the work of the girls guardian angel.
And now that this girl has had a near death experience she will begin to find out that she has a guardian angel since he has made his existence known, Wings thought in his mind. I wonder who exactly her guardian angel is?
After the broadcast was over, Kioku turned off the tv and hurried to finish her homework before falling face first on her soft, cushy bed.
The very next day as Kioku sat in her desk, looking over her school work Wings began to notice as her gaze turned to a young boy, one particular boy who she had liked since the day she had moved to that school. His name was Eric Goldman.
Kioku had always said that Eric was the most kindest, caring, sweetest boy she had ever known, or at least was acainted to. She’d spend several parts of the day just talk about him to Wings with poor Wings listening every second and every time.
Wings looked from Kioku to Eric, his golden eyes watching as Kioku swooned at his every move. Wings only sighed with grief, but as he did a familiar voice nearly scared the wings off him.
“Hey Angelo!” A cheery voice rang out. Wings, a.k.a. Angelo leaped from his floating position in the air. “Whoa buddy, didn’t know you were that glad to see me.”
“Geeze Mateus, you nearly scared me back to heaven,” Angelo scolded the blonde haired angel.
“Yeah, well looking down on this situation it seems like you may stay there,” Mateus replied as he looked down at Kioku as she glanced at Eric. “Looks like another love failed.”
“No. No, I won’t let this one get away,” Angelo’s voice raised. “I promised myself I would become human and if that requires me to get Kioku to fall in love with me than I’m going to do everything possible to show her that I love her.”
“But how are you going to do that? Angels aren’t able to show love you know, or at least the passionate kind of love.”
“I know, but there must be some other way,” Angelo thought aloud. “If only I could tell her myself, but unless I actually have the feeling in my heart I can’t say I love you. It’s almost hopeless.”
“Well,” Mateus responded with a grin. Angelo looked at Mateus with suspicious eyes. “I’ve heard of one way you can get her to love you. But you’ll have to go to Gabriel for the answers.”
“Gabriel? Of course, he’s head angel so he must know something.” Angelo spoke with confidence. “Thanks Mateus, I’ll speak to him right away.”
Angelo beat his heavy white wings and at the speed of light was on his way to heaven where Gabriel resided. His quest wouldn’t take long, or at least it couldn’t. He had a duty as a guardian angel to guide Kioku throughout every day of her life.
Angelo finally reached the dwellings of Gabriel. A small, yet quaint palace made of clouds. Angelo flew right in and immediately his mouth opened to speak to Gabriel.
“I’ve heard that you know a way to get a human to fall in love with an angel,” Angelo told him with a hopeful smile. Gabriel looked at him as though he was looking for more within the question.
“Hmm, yes there is a way to get a human to like you,” Gabriel began. He looked out his window for a brief moment and then turned his attention back to Angelo. “But it’s not as easy as you may think..”
Angelo’s smile turned into a frown as he heard Gabriel’s last sentence. “What exactly do I have to do?”
“You will need to possess a human that is of the opposite sex of the girl you guard. However, you can not possess any who she currently likes,” Gabriel started. Angelo listened intently. “Through this person you will be able to show the girl how much you love her. Once you are sure she loves you back you will tell her that you are her guardian angel in your own voice. Once she recognizes that voice, and knows it is truly you, than you will become human.”
Angelo almost laughed at the easiness of the task. “It doesn’t seem that hard to me.” But Gabriel wasn’t finish.
“But there is a down side to all of this,” Gabriel began as he sat in a chair by his desk. “As you already know, humans, unlike angels, have several feelings that we don’t have. While occupying the young boys body you will encounter several emotions that angels are not use to, meaning you may not be able to control how strong they come out. So be very careful and make sure to choose you feelings wisely.”
“Hmm, alright then,” Angelo replied with a smile. “Seems like you’ve told me everything. But it still doesn’t seem to bad for the cost of love and becoming a human.”
“Believe me, Angelo. Once you possess a human you’ll know what I’m talking about.” Gabriel said with smile.
Angelo waved good bye, as did Gabriel, and away Angelo flew, back to earth where Kioku still stayed in her class.
“Did you get any help from Gab?” Mateus asked as Angelo appeared in the class room.
“Yep.”
“See I told you Gabriel had the answers.” Mateus said it more to himself then to Angelo as though he was reassuring himself. “So what exactly do you have to do.”
“Well,” Angelo thought a moment. Thinking about if he should tell his friend. “Okay, well it requires possessing a human and somehow getting his emotions to work in my favor so that Kioku will fall in love with me.”
“With you posing as a human?” Mateus seemed shocked at the idea. “But don’t they have all kinds of weird emotions and feelings that you won’t be able to control.”
“Yes, which is why I may need you to pull me out of the rut if I can’t control myself.”
“I’ll try my best. But I’m not sure I can be around you 24/7. Rachael needs me to guide her every step of the way in her life.”
“That’s fine, I won’t let it cut in your job,” Angelo replied with a smile. “But at least watch me every second you get.”
“Okay.” Mateus winked and gave a thumbs up. “So when are you planning on possessing a kid, and which one.”
“Hmm, well I’ll probably look over the kids at Kioku’s school today to see which ones she come in contact the most. Then tomorrow I’ll possess the body I’ve chosen and make my first move.
“Awesome, I can’t wait to see this.” Mateus spoke with a grin on his face as he rubbed his hands together.
