Chapter oneThe First Touch With The Magic
It was 9:18 in the morning when it happened. No one was really sure how it had happened, just that it had. All they knew was that a girl had been hit by a car, and that she had not only survived but not even slowed down.
Kathleen Bethany Cooper was a tall, slender, 15-year-old with green eyes and long brown hair. She had been going to school and hadn't seen the Sedan plowing towards her until it was too late.
Then, with a mighty cry of "LOOK OUT!" Something slammed into Kathy, knocking her across the street and out of danger. BAM! The car hit the thing hard. Kathy raised her head, trying desperately to process what had just happened, and saw that the thing was a girl.
The girl’s hair was short and blond, and she wore a black shirt with a skull and crossbones and a black leather duster. The lady who had been driving the Sedan leapt from her car and raced towards the girl, waving her hands. Suddenly, the girl's eyes opened. Kathy gasped. The girl's eyes were blood-red.
The girl got to her feet and skillfully back flipped over Kathy, landing safely on the curb. Kathy's jaw dropped. The girl stopped, smiled, and bowed slightly. And then she turned and ran off down the street.
"I'm telling you," Kathy began for the third time in an irritated tone, "This girl saved me and wasn't even hurt!"
"Honey," her mother started. She looked at her daughter with a no-way-that-could-be-true expression on her face. "That's impossible. She got hit by a car. Of course she was hurt."
"Yeah," Kathy persisted, "But did you hear the hospital staff mention any other girl found on the scene? Did you? Did you?"
Kathy's mother opened her mouth and closed it again.
"Mrs. Cooper, we need you to sign these forms," A nurse called from the doorway. "Will you come with me, please?" Kathy watched her mother follow the nurse away. Then there was a voice.
"Was she really not hurt?" Kathy turned. Her younger sister, Emma, was leaning on the wall near the window.
"No. She sure didn't look it, anyway. And her eyes---I'll never forget them. They were red. It was so strange."
"She could have had allergies," Emma joked.
"Ha ha, very funny," Kathy said. "But I just had a feeling---that she's going to be important to my life somehow."
"Of course she is," Emma said. "She saved your life, didn't she?" Kathy nodded.
"Yes. But something else just tells me she'll be important." Emma walked towards her older sister.
"She already is."
"You got hit by a car?!"
"Yeah. It's nothing, though. Not even a fracture."
"Damn you, Dark. You shock me more every day."
Darkchilde looked at her uncle and laughed.
"I do, don't I?" He smiled.
"Yes, you do." He leaned down to her. A soft growl rose in her throat and he straightened up again. He had forgotten just how much she hated that. "You know what's coming up?" he asked in a softer voice. She looked at him.
"Yes, I do. The day my parents died." He nodded.
"I miss them too, Darkchilde. Every day that goes by, I miss them more." Her beautiful red eyes narrowed. "And, Every day that goes by, the more I want to kill James Giovanni."
"I understand. But don't. Watch yourself, Darky."
"Always do." He nodded.
"Okay. love you."
"love you, too." Then he was gone. She turned around, coughing. Something landed in the floor at her feet. She looked. A dagger was embedded in the floor at her feet. She looked up. A man, his long curly brown hair blowing in the wind, was standing in front of her. His green Traveler's cloak billowed tightly around him. "Oh, holy shiiit...."
