There once was a time when tales were true
And fictional knights would go riding off into the sunset
We used to believe there was nothing we couldn't do
And maybe there still isn't, when this life we forget
There once was a time when imagination was fired
By the words of the teacher, or pictures in a book
We'd save the world over and over and never get tired
At least until the bell rang and inside we'd troop
There once was a time when things weren't so hard
Well, not like the way they are now
You look back and wonder, "Where did it all start,
When life lost its colour and we stopped saying wow?"
There once was a time when childhood was endless
You know, when life revolved around playtime, and stuff
Just look at life now when so much of it seems pointless
The fun things get you nowhere, and the meaningful's tough
There once was a time when we knew what we were
Just kids in a classroom, or friends down the park
And now that we're here all the words start to slur
Into meaningless rhyme and bumps in the dark
There once was a time when I knew what to say
Or rather, I'd say nothing at all
I guess the words I write are my own verbal play
'Cos words make you screw up and it's further to fall
There once was a time when something like this was simple
And I could rattle the words right off of my head
But now that I'm thinking, the pond starts to ripple
(And this rhyme's making me wish I were dead!)
There once was a time when the end was in sight
The last part of the game, or when night always falls
Still times keep a-changing, however much you fight
And where will we be standing when the Grim Reaper calls?
