big shoes, strange town
footsteps leading up and down,
the shoes are big, in a strange town
familiar faces in and out
the mem'ry's faint; it gives a doubt
half-forgotten sleepless nights
those restless dreams, the endless fights
words exchanged without regard
forehead tattooed, and eyes all starred
.....a fire burns behind his eyes
.....a fever fills his foolish mind
.....he rises up, and sags back down
.....inside big shoes, in a strange town
his life's a blur, his shattered past
destroys his mind, but he holds fast
his dreams forgotten, all but one
he will not die before his son
his shoes are big, he knows the town
but still his feet move up and down
he has no life, he has no son
his wife? forgotten. stanza one.
on his tombstone there will be
no anecdote, no legacy
no one remembers this poor man
he was too busy with his plan
inside big shoes, in a strange town
are feet that walked all up and down
attached to legs that made their way
into the setting sun one day.
.....a fire died so long ago
.....it pains all who remember, know.
.....that foolish man was not a freak
.....his shoes? his town? across the creek.
