Chapter six
For some reason the group had decided to first ride the Ferris wheel, perhaps since it was the nearest ride, or the cheapest. Compared to the tiny roller coasters and other thrill rides, the Ferris wheel had a certain allure that could only be satisfied if one was to ride upon it. The sun still shone brightly above their heads, the rays collecting in Emma's golden hair creating a heavy sort of shine. Cocking her head gently to the side as they rode higher into the air, she felt herself scoot instantly closer to her partner, Justin.
"Did I mention that I'm afraid of heights?" Relaxing into the seat, she rested a single hand on the bar in front of them that separated the seat from a perilous drop forward. Squinting in an almost fearful fashion, she felt his hand reassuringly grip her own, giving it a soft squeeze before gently releasing it from his grasp.
"Don't be afraid, Emma. These things aren't dangerous."
Almost on cue they had finally reached the top, when suddenly the ride halted. The car rocked back and forth violently, although it abruptly came to a stop. Emma nearly jumped out of the seat when the Ferris wheel ceased its turning, it seems there had been an electrical error and there was nothing the operator could do about it. Justin upon hearing these rather unencouraging words emitted a callous laugh, hushing it as soon as he gazed upon Emma's obviously horror-stricken face.
"What if we're stuck, Justin?"
He gave a light shrug before shrinking back down into his seat, smirking gently as his face turned to view her own once more. Staring at her blankly, he gripped her hand within his own once more. This time it was softer, but she could still feel his energy as it pulsed through his veins, seeming to transfer into herself.
"This actually might give us time to, talk... I guess. There's something I wanted to ask you."
Her stomach lurched even more strongly than when the ride had ceased, her tongue tied itself in knots and throat closed tightly. He had a question for her? She could only assume this was a matter of relationships, something she was really no expert in at the moment. Her old beau, Cody, had been her first -- and only -- love. What could she say if that was what Justin wanted to ask her? Sighing deeply, her blue eyes darted downward, avoiding his own, her heart's pace seeming to race for a moment.
"I know that we don't know each other well, I honestly don't even know your last name... but Emma, there's something about you. I just want to figure out what that is if you will give me the chance."
He seemed to sincere, so kind... loving even. How could she say no, especially when the remainder of the summer was looking so dim? They could go on a few dates, talk a bit, it would work. Or so she thought. Her own hand delicately wrapped itself around his own, her torso sliding forward facing him, inching closer as her face paused only inches from his own. Her pale garnet lips pressing together nervously, all before he finished the job and pressed his own lips to hers. For a moment they remained locked in a soft, yet meaningful caress, finally pulling away. There, she thought, that wasn't too awkward.
