FAITH

By Mercury Angel II

Faith lay on the couch, thinking. Why was Gary not home at the time he always was? Faith and Gary had been married for five years. They were twenty-seven years old and had a 4-year-old son named Ken. She went to her bedroom, fell onto the bed and sighed. Suddenly, she heard the front door open. Faith pretended to be asleep. Soon, Gary entered the room. Faith glanced at Gary when he wasn’t looking. He seemed to have had a good sleep. Gary changed into his pajamas and lay down far away from Faith, leaving a big space between the two. Faith felt her heart started to ache again. It has been like this for three weeks already. Gary had been rushing off to work lately and arriving back later than usual. When she was about to doze off, the alarm clock rang. Faith got out of bed and was greeted by a Gary who was in a hurry to get out.

“What are you up so early? It’s only 4:30 in the morning. Where are you going?” Faith asked.

“Have a client today! Going to be late if I don’t hurry!’ Gary said coldly, while tying his brown Kenneth Cole shoes, the ones that make him look tall. He didn’t look up. “I’m taking Ken out today.”

“Why? I thought you were busy with your work?”

“The company is organizing a fun day for us. I thought I might as well bring Ken with me and let him have some fun,” Gary said, still not making any movement to look at her.

“May I come?”

“It’s only for office members and their children.”

“Oh,” Faith whispered as Gary grabbed his suit case and rushed out of the house with Ken. He didn’t even say goodbye to her. When the door closed with a bang, Faith slumped in a chair. A while later Faith took composure again and slipped into bed. A few days ago, a friend of her had witnessed Gary going out on a date with a blonde haired woman, but Faith just couldn’t bring herself to believe that Gary was cheating on her.

Later in the afternoon, Faith was taking a stroll at a nearby park. She was about to turn to a corner away from the park when suddenly she heard someone calling her son’s name.

“Ken!”

Faith jumped. Was that Gary? Wasn’t he supposed to be at the company? Faith thought. As she turned she saw, ten meters away, Ken was playing catching with Gary. They were shortly followed by a blonde haired woman. The lady managed to catch Ken and carry him up, making him laugh. Gary put his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek. Two couples walked past and exclaimed:

“Hey look! Aren’t they such a cute couple?”

“Yeah, they look perfect together. Oh, their son’s so cute! What a happy family!”

Tears fell as she watched the two people she loved the most walking away happily with another woman. Faith turned and ran back to her house. She packed up and left without a sound.

Gary didn’t notice Faith had gone until the next morning. Ken was crying because his mother had been missing since the night before. Faith’s closet was empty. Her photos on the wall were gone. She took all her belongings with her and vanished without a trace. The only thing she left was the divorce paper lying on top of the dinner table. Gary dialed her cell phone number. She didn’t pick it up. He called Faith again at work, but she had blocked any messages coming from him. A couple days later, Gary visited Faith’s parents’ house, hoping that he would find her there. He wanted to apologize. He didn’t want to lose his wife. However, her parents refused to talk and slammed the door on him. Soon, he lost track of her completely.

Gary didn’t meet Faith again until five years later. A long time before that, he had broken up with the other woman. He couldn’t forget Faith and the damage he had done to their marriage. The feeling of guilt was too overwhelming, and this deep emotion weighing his shoulders and heart was taking its toll. He never realized the importance of Faith’s presence around him until she was gone.

Gary was on his way home from work. He was taking the subway when he ran into Faith. He walked over and said hi. To Gary’s relief, she didn’t mind talking to him. They had a small chat on the subway about what happened to each of them over the past five years. Gary started to apologize for what caused them to break up, and Faith fell into a moment of uncomfortable silence. Just then, the subway came to a halt. Faith stood up.

“That’s my stop,” she said.

“You’re leaving?” Gary asked. He sounded a bit desperate.

“Yes, my husband is waiting to pick me up.”

She has married someone else, Gary told himself, and he felt the ache again. “Do you plan on coming to visit? Ken misses you a lot,” he asked with a tiny bit of hope.

“No, Gary, I’ve moved on,” Faith answered. “Life isn’t always going to turn out the way you want it to be. There are some things that can only be done in a certain period of time. Once you miss it, you’re never going back.”

The door slid open, and a man outside smiled tenderly at Faith. Gary assumed that was her husband.

“Goodbye, Gary,” Faith said before walking out of the door. “Promise that you’ll forget me.”

“Mm,” Gary managed to say. He held back the tears when he stared at Faith’s distancing back.

“Who were you talking to?” Faith’s husband asked her curiously.

“Just an old friend of mine,” Faith replied with a smile. The subway slowly began to move. Soon, the couple moved out of view.

But Gary never got over it completely. The overwhelming grief left him a permanent trauma for the rest of his life.

A/N: Sorry guys. I can't really write, since English is my second language. Please be nice to me, don't swear or yell at me in your reviews. I really tried to put an effort into this. I wouldn't have uploaded this story if it's just another "trash" story.
