Mrs. Brek Cohen: A Promise Between Friends

Summary: When Mindy makes her best friend, Liz, promise to introduce her to her celebrity crush if she ever became famous as an actress, little did she know that it would actually happen-- especially when her life seems to already be going so wonderfully.

Prologue

- Ten Years Earlier -

“He’s so perfect,” I sighed dreamily as I ogled a picture of the famous young actor, Brek Cohen. He was a fourteen-year-old child prodigy, starring in ten box office hits since he began acting as a five-year-old. He had an Emmy and an Oscar under his belt already and he had the vocabulary of a grown man. On top of all that, he was the most handsome fourteen-year-old I’d ever seen with his bleach blonde hair in an unusual “perfectly messy” style, big blue eyes, and he always looked so mature in every picture he took whether he wore a polo and slacks or torn jeans and a Radiohead shirt.

Liz glanced at the magazine I had in front of me as we laid down on my bed reading teen magazines like we always did every day after school.

“Eh, he’s okay,” she shrugged. Liz was more into the hardcore rockers.

“Okay?” I huffed. “Try gorgeous or-- or fantastic. He’s my soul mate, I just know it, Liz.”

She gave me a supportive smile and said, “You two would look cute together.”

I couldn’t help a smile from spreading across my face. “Have I ever told you that you’re the best friend ever?”

Liz nodded playfully. “Can’t say I disagree with you there, Mindy.”

I changed my lay-on-belly position to the more comfortable lay-on-back position and held the page about Brek to my chest. “Mrs. Mindy Cohen. No, no…. Mrs. Brek Cohen.”

“Oh sure, forget your name altogether,” Liz frowned. “I think Mrs. Mindy Cohen sounds better.”

“Eh, it’s okay,” I mocked Liz.

She hit me with a pillow and that caused a game of “pillow fight” to erupt. As we bombarded each other with fluffy pillows, an idea suddenly sparked. I allowed Liz to hit me on the head with her alligator throw pillow before I jumped onto my bed again and looked thoughtfully at her.

“What?” she said as she slowly sat down in front of me. “Why are you looking at me like that, Mindy?”

“Liz, you still want to be an actress, right?” I asked her.

“Yeah-h,” she replied.

Liz is a talented, aspiring thirteen-year-old actress. She’s got the looks, the personality, and the determination to make it in Hollywood-- and she also always kept her promises.

She promised me that one day she would have her name in every headline and in every box office hit once she was discovered and she would be discovered. She just knew it and she made sure every one knew it.

She promised me that she would do whatever it took to become a star beginning with long acting lessons-- and on that day, she got her parents to sign her up for those lessons with the best acting coach in Sacramento.

Liz was seven then and she was still taking those four hour lessons from the exact same coach. Her acting became more and more natural and polished with each day that passed.

“Can you make me a promise?” I asked her.

She studied my face before telling me to continue.

“If-- no, when you become a famous movie star,” I said, “you’ll be able to meet and befriend all of these other movie moguls, right?”

Liz nodded. “I hope.”

“Well,” I said, looking at her levelly, “if you happen to meet Brek Cohen--”

“Oh, Mindy, come on!” she laughed as she opened her magazine again.

“Seriously, Liz,” I told her in my most earnest voice as I snatched the magazine away from her.

“Hey!” she protested.

“I’m not joking around. If you ever get the chance to meet Brek Cohen, can you introduce me to him?”

She looked at me and studied my face again for the longest time. Then she sighed and said, “Okay. Fine, I will.”

“Promise me,” I urged.

Liz smiled and said, “All right, I promise that I’ll introduce you to Brek Cohen if I ever get the chance to meet him. Happy?”

“Ecstatic!” I exclaimed and gave her a hug. “Thanks, Liz.”

AuThOr’S nOtE: Well, that’s the prologue. If I get good feedback, I’ll be sure to put up Chapter One: Ten Years Later. :D I’d love it if you would please tell me what you think!
