Extra O(r)dinary Story Part 1
Return to Fantasy
Ep: 0
Version 3 Re-Write 1
For some it is a burden to be in reality while for others, reality is what they have to face and accept. But, what if there was another reality where one’s innermost fantasies come to live? What if one has the chance to go there? What if one has all the power one ever wished when one goes there?
These many ‘ifs’ in our everyday lives gives us these make-believe situations that’s never going to come true.
“Maybe if, there is no if, I wouldn’t be thinking about if.”

Extra O(r)dinary Story Part1
Beginning
Ep: 1
“... The ‘other’ world. Have you been to the ‘other’ world?”, “Have you seen the ‘other’ world?” or “Do you not believe in the ‘other’ world?” ... “You see, the ‘other’ world is not what some people refer to as the ‘spiritual world’” ... “It simply means another reality ... “Come with me then, come with me to the ‘other’ world where you can escape from all your troubles.”
School examinations were already over but the students had to attend school as per normal until their results were released. So during this period, it was fun for most of them. Classmates would bring in all sorts of games to play while some others sit idly or prepare themselves for next year’s subjects.
Four friends, classmates, sat together in class gossiping and wasting their time away while one of them fell into a deep sleep.
---
In a tunnel devoid of light, a group of people were crawling their way out. Jit Meng, the one who fell asleep, found himself wearing metal armour, gloves and a weapon attached to his waist. He felt weird and wanted to speak to the others but could not; all he could do was follow the sequence of this unique dream.
A girl’s voice spoke to him. “Here take this, it’s something useful.”
He obliged and extended his hand in front to receive the item she found in the midst of darkness. It felt warm, soft, furry and perhaps fleshy but whatever that was, it was certainly alive.
“Ah! What are you doing? You’re groping ... !” She gasped furiously.
“No, wait, WAIT! I could see! I mean I couldn’t! ... I ...!” Jit Meng desperately tried to apologize in his dreams.
“You pervert!” The voice chided and gave him a tight slap, wounding his face with burning claw wounds as a souvenir.
---
A loud thump woke him up. “Oi! Wake up! Our marks are being distributed!”
Jit Meng almost jumped and sighed when he realise it was only Ee Hwa, his classmate. “Huh?” Feeling sleepy, he rubbed the tiredness off as he turned away, “Chey (figure of speech), I thought I touched your ...”
Ee Hwa leaned backwards and frowned suspiciously, “Touched my what ...?”
He squeezed his cheeks which felt disfigured a while ago, “Mm, nothing, it’s nothing,” he replied laconically.
She continued staring at him, not giving up.
“Nothing!”
She insisted incredulously.
“What?! It’s nothing!”
She laughed and turned away, “Don’t angry lah (figure of speech), just joking only ”
And so their form teacher distributed the results one by one to the students. A joyous occasion for some while grave affair for the rest. In a class, there is always the ones who worked for it and the ones who slept through it.
Ee Hwa emerged top position in class, securing about ninety-seven percent of the whole year’s assessments. She was overjoyed. This was only expected after all the sleepless nights studying for exams and family stress.
Jit Meng emerged twelfth position reading from the bottom, securing about fifty five percent of the whole year’s assessments. He was not overjoyed. This was only expected after all the gaming nights trying to ‘de-stress’; or so he says.
Ee Hwa sighed with relieve and happiness, “Yay, finally got it! I may want to celebrate for my results, you all free today?”
“Yeah sure ” Eric, one of the four, replied spontaneously.
“I can’t make it today,” Chen Yi replied regretfully while spinning his pen trying to hold his concentration on what he was writing earlier on.
“Jit?”
He looked far out the window woolgathering about the dream just now.
Ee Hwa sighed bleakly, “Flying off to somewhere else again ... OI!” She slammed her hands on his desk.
He jumped. “What?” He asked irritably.
She looked at the other two and shrugged, “Aiya (figure of speech), never mind lah, he’s not listening anyways.”
“I am,now,” he insisted on knowing what was announced.
“I want to celebrate my results, you want to go or not?”
“Chey, don’t want lah, I want to go block 139.”
Block 139 was the apartment Jit Meng used to live in during his childhood. He moved to a new apartment a few years ago. Although his new home was better than his previous in every aspect, he would return whenever he had time. It held sentimental values to him; a whole lot of memories for the first thirteen years of his life.
“Of all the places ...” Ee Hwa sighed again, “why do you have a fetish for old things?”
Jit Meng winced a little at her comment, “It’s not a ‘fetish’ lah, just a place that means a lot to me. If I don’t go now, that building is going to be demolished.”
“What’s with you today? Bad mood?” She sounded concerned, for a while.
Ee Hwa was shortest among them four and perhaps most playful aside from Eric. But that was only because the amount of stress she suffers at home. Due to neglect in food control, she grew up to be fat (she looks bloated actually, which was why they love to tease her) and had been trying to slim down over the years with slow results. A fair skinned girl, she keeps a neat shoulder-length hair and is very particular about personal hygiene at times.
“No no no, it’s not that ...” Jit Meng shook his head trying to clear his mind.
“Then whatis?”
Jit Meng, the shortest male among them all, was actually a repeat student during his first year in secondary school. Through some incidents, he got close with the other three, whom he considered to be very important. A gaming fan of Role Playing Games, he shared the same interest with Eric and Chen Yi, leaving Ee Hwa out. He suffered some invisible stress from family as well but does not reveal it openly like Ee Hwa does, causing an invisible anger to build up inside.
Over the years, his classmates somehow got into the habit of calling him ‘Jit’. This name somehow brought him a sense of familiarity hence only introduced himself as that.
Eric laughed, “What got into you today? Spacing out like this.”
“Day dreaming,” Ee Hwa replied for him, “He always day dreams one (figure of speech) ”
Eric was another RPG fan and loves playing basketball just as much. He would ask Jit Meng and Chen Yi out at times to have a game with him but Jit Meng was usually the only one serious about it. He was always exaggerating things in a hilarious way which made them laugh their troubles off.
“Oh shit, I realised I haven’t complete my tuition homework,” Chen Yi rummaged through his bag to get his assessment book.
“Huh? Even after the exams?” Eric remarked absentmindedly.
“Ya lor, preparing me for future exams. You haven’t realised why I can score as high as Ee Hwa in every Chinese test and exam meh (figure of speech)?”
“Ha,” he laughed sheepishly, “I haven’t thought of that. Your parents must’ve high hopes for your Chinese.”
“Ya, they believe we should preserve our own culture.”
Wearing a pair of specs, Chen Yi was about as tall as Eric, if not taller and was another gaming fan who plays a wider variety compared to the other two. He kept slightly long hair and keeps centre-parting hair style unlike Eric who always change. Sometimes he would come up with really sarcastic actions that could mean a lot or nothing which never fail to make them burst out laughing.
After the short commotion, Jit Meng’s mind flew off to somewhere else again while others continued their random discussion. He used to be quite alert during his childhood but somehow grew up to be a daydreamer; the others he met assured him this was just a normal sign of growing up but he was not convinced.
---
The dream; his mind went back to the topic. What was it all about? The pain, the crawling, equipment ... all felt too real to be true and at the same time accompanied by a hint of reminiscence. And the girl who slapped him, it felt more like an animal’s scratch rather than ...
---
“Jit,” Ee Hwa gently shook him, “it’s time to go.”
“Eril...?” His voice sounded surreal, “huh? Ee Hwa?”
She said nothing but frowned suspiciously at him.
“Go home already?” He looked around the empty class.
“Who’s Eril?”
“Who?”
“Eril.”
“Eril who?”
“The name you just called out.”
“I did meh?” He looked away and scratched his head trying to recall where the name came from.
She stared at him silently.
“I don’t know where it came from, maybe I was dreaming lah,” he confessed, “aren’t you going already?”
“Chey, this is not fun, just when I thought I’ve found something new to tease you ... Anyway, Eric suggested we follow you to that place since we’ll be passing by, besides, we don’t want you to be knocked down by a car when you cross the roads.”
“How sweet,” he replied sarcastically.
She feigned a big smile, “We eat lots of sugar.”
He felt a sense of warmness rushed through him; it was good to know there were friends that cared about him. Although she said they were ‘passing by’, that place was rather far from their school but reachable by foot in thirty minutes. Ee Hwa went on ahead to meet Eric at the canteen while Jit Meng stuffed everything into his bag and rushed to their meeting venue.
---
He quickly made way down the stairs at the end of the corridor down two stories where the canteen was. It was packed as usual, being lunchtime noon, and he walked about trying to find those two.
“Oi!” Eric shouted from behind. He and Ee Hwa stood beside the drinks vending machine waiting patiently for him.
“Sorry to keep you guys waiting,” he apologised as he walked towards them.
“Always late. Why you always late one?” Ee Hwa frowned.
“Because you’re always later than me when we meet? You ar ...” Jit Meng shook his head bleakly. Whenever Jit Meng goes out on a friendly date with her, she would always come after him, no matter how early or late was he. Hence he developed a habit of being even later than before.
Along the way they talked a lot but were mainly covered by Jit Meng and Ee Hwa’s bickering, leaving Eric alone. Among the four, Jit Meng was considered closest to her and squabbles a lot more than the others. Of course, they were not serious about it despite the realism in the way they talk.
“Hmph!” Ee Hwa snorted and slapped Jit Meng’s shoulders a few times.
“Ow, ow, ow!”
This’ how their argument end and then came a new one. A daily routine that would never get old for them.
It was about half an hour when they reached the front of the old building. The paints worn off, stains everywhere and bugs in every corner. Stray cats too had their own sleeping spots all over the place. Ee Hwa and Eric shrugged at it --- how could anyone normal fall in love with it?
“Ugh! I hate cats! They’re disgusting!” Ee Hwa said.
Jit Meng sighed. “Please don’t start.”
“Have fun with your building fetish.”
Jit Meng scowled at her, “It is not my fetish!”
“Ha, bye,” Eric laughed a little as he big farewell.
Seeing the couple leaving, Jit Meng wondered why Eric had not revealed his feelings for her yet. Sometimes both of them were so close that they could be easily mistaken as a dating couple. Then again, maybe that was why rumours about he himself and Ee Hwa had been flying around in their class for some time now.
Looking up into the azure sky, he sighed, and thought, “I’m thinking too much again.”
He took a deep breath and took the stairs instead of the lift to the second floor where the block of rectangular, metal mail boxes were. It was his habit to check the mail box that belonged to his unit, except this time he had no keys to open it. Most of them were overflowed with letters and flyers while some were badly dented. Then, he climbed up eight stories to where his ex-unit was.
He sighed again as he felt the rusty door plate with his fingers, “Marcus, Rachel, where are you people? How are you doing now?”
Marcus and Rachel used to be his childhood friends whom he spent lots of time with but about four years ago, they went missing without a trace. Police gave up this case of disappearance while it was classified as an unsolved mystery. He was devastated at that moment for the two of his most treasured friends had left him without a word. The wounds healed when he met Ee Hwa, the one who made him feel companied, Eric, the one who introduced the world of gaming and outdoor activities and Chen Yi the one who taught him to be optimistic. They were great friends, they glued to each other but he had never forgotten the days he spent with Marcus and Rachel.
An urge to enter that unit once again made him thrust a hand under the closed metal windows to reach the inner lock. A simple ‘click’ signalled his victory. He pushed the door open and came into a living room of dust and emptiness. To the left was a room which used to be their bedroom (his parents and him used to share one bedroom but they slept in the living room with straw mattress most of the time), and in front was the kitchen.
Slowly, he walked over to the back where the kitchen and the bathroom were. He was shocked when he leaned over the kitchen window; the whole place was fenced up. It was impossible; if they had fenced up the place, he should have noticed it earlier but he did not.
He scurried to the front to confirm what he saw and it was there, the fences were there. It was impossible, definitely impossible, if that was still reality. Bending over the parapet, he spotted construction workers planting something underneath, something he did not wish to know. No matter how loud he yelled at the people, they did not look up, or react to it as if they could not hear anything. This made him even more frantic and desperate to get out of this creepy place. Then, out of nowhere, a crane machine with a big iron ball came into view. Perhaps it came in without him noticing, which was what he would like to believe but there was no time to think as the crane started moving.
“Damn!” He cursed as he scuttled to the windows at the back of the kitchen, thinking of jumping down but acrophobia hindered him. Hoping there was an alternative, he turned back only to find the iron ball crushing mercilessly into the room, smashing everything in its way. The ball, however, did not reach him; it stopped a few inches just before touching him.
