Outside Betrayal
Chapter 1
Jamie woke to the incessant buzzing of her alarm. ‘What the hell?’ She thought looking at the time. The glowing green letters on her digital clock read 6:00am. Jamie groaned and rolled over to get some more sleep.
“James, sweetie, you need to get up now.” Jamie’s mom called knocking softly on her door. “Jamie,” she sighed seeing her sound asleep. “You don’t want to be late on your first day of high school. If you get up now I’ll give you a ride.” Jamie’s mother said before walking into the kitchen.
High school. Jamie sighed. She hated school, high school especially. No matter how little attention she paid her teachers she got good grades, but that was the extent of her good luck in school. She didn’t have many friends, and the preps ran the school. If you weren’t a prep then you were a nobody; like her and her friends. Chloe was Jamie’s best friend; she was tall with long blond hair and dazzling eyes that constantly changed from blue to green. Maria and Nicole were also good friends of Jamie’s. Maria had long jet-black hair and gray-blue eyes; she and Nicole were both short. Nicole’s hair was short and a honey blonde and she had normal brown eyes, but they had golden specks in them. They were the extent of Jamie’s friends, the rest of her little ‘group’ consisted of Pam, the annoying brunette one that thought that every liked her even though they hated her; Agatha, the black haired one was very annoying and she only had about a total of one true friend; and finally Kimmy, the only way to get a good description of her is if you’ve ever watched Daria on MTV, Kimmy resembled Brittney perfectly.
Jamie grinned at her reflection in the mirror; she had recently gotten her long brown haircut so that it framed her pretty face. Her green eyes were unusually bright, but there was a reason for them to be. Jamie was finally going to be able to see her long time crush, Parker Scott, whom she hadn’t seen all summer.
“Jamie!” Chloe called seeing her walk up to the front doors of the high school; they had agreed to meet there. “Girl, what did you do to your hair?”
“Oh,” Jamie laughed. “I decided to try something new. You like?”
“I love.” Chloe smiled at her. “Want to go and try to find our homeroom?” She asked after they had chatted for a few minutes. Jamie nodded and the set off in search for their homeroom.
“Isn’t this it?” Jamie asked as they walked down the hall looking at the numbers on the doors.
“Yeah, go in.” Chloe nodded. They walked into the room and sat in the far corner, were they, if lucky, wouldn’t be noticed.
“Oh my god Chlo, he’s in this homeroom, can you believe it?” Jamie whispered excitedly as Parker walked in. “He looks ffffiiiiiiinnnnnneeeee.”
“Uh, sure Jame, if you insist.” Chloe shrugged.
“Hey James, how’s life?” Codey Miller asked sitting in the seat in front of Jamie. Codey was one of those preppy guys, but he was nice to Jamie and her friends only because they had known each other since pretty much forever; their mothers had been high school friends and had kept in touch through the years.
“Eh, the usual.” Jamie shrugged, not taking her eyes off of Parker.
“That bad huh?” Codey smiled.
“Yeah, that bad.” Jamie grinned back, finally tearing her eyes away from Parker.
The three of them sat in their little corner chatting away. Two minutes before the bell Kimmy came bounding in the room, in high spirits.
“Hi guys!” She exclaimed seeing Jamie and Chloe. They groaned silently as Kimmy skipped across the room to talk to them.
“Hey Kim.” Chloe sighed. Kimmy giggled and sat down next to Chloe. Codey got up and walked over to his preppy friends, he couldn’t stand Kimmy, he always claimed her voice gave him a migraine. So Jamie pretended to listen to Kimmy’s ‘wonderful’ stories about shopping at the mall, but instead stared past her at the door, dreaming of Parker coming over and talking to her. A cute boy with curly brown hair burst into the room just as the bell rang. He looked around sheepishly and slipped into the only available seat, the seat next to Jamie and in front of Kimmy. Jamie watched him, she had never seen him before, he must have transferred schools over the summer.
“Hi,” Jamie grinned pretending that she hadn’t been checking him out.
“Hi.” He said back shortly and looked at the black bored in the front of the room.
“Are you new here? I haven’t seen you before.”
“Yeah, I just moved here from Cali.”
“Oh, I’m Jamie by the way.” Jamie smiled and offered her hand.
“Jacob.” The boy said ignoring her hand.
“So, are you one of those preppy football or lacrosse players?” Jamie inquired, determined not to let the preppies take over another new student.
“Nope, I’m a swimmer and skater.” Jacob said glancing at her. “You?”
“Skater. Rollerblading is my life.” She smiled warmly at him, it looked as though there would be another person joining the ‘outcast’ group. “Swimming and skater is an odd combo.”
“Yeah, I guess. I’m also into singing and drama.”
“No kidding? I love drama. I got a lead role in our play last year.” Jamie grinned. This Jacob kid seemed to be a really cool kid.
“James, make her shut up, I think I’m starting to get a headache, her voice is too damn high and squeaky.” Chloe whispered to Jamie.
“Jacob, this is my best friend Chloe. Chlo, this is Jacob, he’s from California.” Jamie introduced them.
“Hi Jacob.” Chloe smiled at him. “Ok, now can you make her shut up?”
“Fine.” Jamie sighed. “Hey Kimmy, Phil’s looking at you, why don’t you go and talk to him?” Chloe grinned; she had forgotten that Kimmy was infatuated with Philip White.
“Ohmygosh! You’re kidding?” Kimmy squealed. “Sorry to ditch you, but bye!” Kimmy ran off to go flirt with Phil.
“Nice.” Chloe gave Jamie a high five. “I completely forgot about ‘lover-boy’.”
“Kimmy is really nice, but it’s impossible to listen to her for long periods of time.” Jamie explained to Jacob who had a confused look on his face.
“Oh, I see.” Jacob nodded; he then glanced around the room. “Why are the two of you off in this corner alone?” He inquired.
“Cause we’re the ‘rebels’.” Chloe explained. “We don’t shop in their preppy stores or play their preppy sports. We’re, believe it or not, our own people.”
Jacob grinned; he had just found two new friends. “So, when do we find out what classes we’re in?”
“Oh, um, as soon as our teacher gets around to it.” Chloe grinned.
“In other words now.” Jamie clarified. Just then their teacher, Miss. Waller, started calling off names. “I hope I’m in some classes with Parker this year.” Jamie whispered to Chloe, who just shook her head. When they got their schedules they started comparing right away.
“And we have a new student from California, everyone, this is Jacob Pierce.” Miss. Waller announced as she handed Jacob his schedule.
“Hey, you’re in all of Jamie’s classes, no fair, I just have history and bio with you guys.” Chloe groaned grabbing Jacob’s schedule away from him, then shoving it back at him.
“James, do I have the joy of putting up with you in any of my classes?” Codey asked sitting on her desk.
“I dunno, look.” Jamie said showing him her class list.
“Hey look at that, I get to see my favorite gal all day.”
“You’re not serious.” Jamie gaped.
“Nope, I am.” Codey grinned. “And guess who’s in my geometry class.”
Jamie’s eyes opened wide. This year’s gonna be the absolute best!” She exclaimed and jumped up to hug Codey.
“Whoa, girl, calm down. You hugging me is bad for my rep.” Codey joked.
“Ugh, I can’t believe I hugged a prep, gross, get away!” Jamie laughed.
“Aw, you know you wanna do more than just hug a prep, and not to mention the preppiest prep there is.”
“Get away before I hurt you. He’s sitting right there, honestly Codey.” Jamie hissed at him then turned to join in Chloe and Jacob’s conversation, ignoring Codey.
The rest of the day went by in a blur. Jamie only saw Chloe in the two classes they had together. Jamie hadn’t seen Nicole all day, but Maria was in her lunch shift along with Pam and Agatha, Nicole and Chloe had lunch after them. Jacob and Jamie had stuck together all day. Sometimes Codey would join them, but that wasn’t too often. The highlight of Jamie’s day so far was Parker sitting next to her in geometry.
Now Jamie had just arrived home, it turned out that Jacob lived down the street from her, so they took the same bus.
Jamie dropped her backpack on the floor and crashed on the couch with the phone.
“Chloe, hey I was wondering, want to go to the skate park?” She asked after Chloe answered her phone.
“Uh, sure, I’ll be over in 10.” Chloe answered.
“K. Oh, call Nicky and invite her, I’m calling Maria.”
“All right. Bye.”
Jamie’s conversation with Maria was similar. They had agreed to meet at the skate park. Jamie grabbed her blades and put them on before heading to the park. As she got near the end of the street she stopped and looked at the little house where Jacob now lived. She debated for a moment, but then decided to go up to the door. She walked nervously up the walkway, she really shouldn’t have been nervous, considering her and Jacob were pretty good friends already. Jamie took a deep breath and knocked on the door, she was just about to turn and go to the park alone when a woman opened the door.
“Yes?” She asked in a kind and gentle voice.
“Hi, I’m Jamie, I live down the street. I was just wondering of Jacob would want to come hang out with me and a few friends.” Jamie smiled sweetly at the woman who was most likely his mother.
“Oh, you’re Jamie, Jacob was just telling me about you. I’ll go get him. Oh, and Jamie, I’m Mrs. Pierce, but call me Michelle.” With that she turned to go back inside to get Jacob.
“Hey Jamie.” Jacob smiled as he came to the door.
“Hey, we’re going to the skate park, want to come?”
“Sure, lemme grab my board.” Jacob called running into the house. He came back out a minute later, skateboard in hand and followed Jamie down the street to the skate park. Nicole was already there skating around when they arrived.
“Nicky, hi.” Jamie called waving to her.
“Hey James.” Nicole grinned skating up to her. “I haven’t talked to you yet. So, is ‘the hottie’ in any of your classes?”
“Yep, geometry, he sits next to me.”
“Ahem.” Jacob said, grinning. “I’m kinda standing right here ya know.” Nicole raised her eyebrows in surprise; she hadn’t seen Jacob standing there.
“Oh, Jake, sorry.” Jamie laughed, after geometry she promised Jacob that she wouldn’t mention Parker in his presence. “Nicky, this is Jacob, Jake, this is Nicole.” She introduced them.
“Hi Nicole. Um, if you two are going to talk about him then I’m going, see ya.”
“Wow, he’s in a good mood.” Jamie commented. “So, anyways, can you believe he sits next to me?!”
“That’s great!” Nicole grinned. “But you’re starting to sound like Kimmy.”
“Oh, that’s not very good, now is it? Maybe I should calm down just a little bit.” Jamie laughed.
“Yeah, just maybe.” Nicole grinned.
Jacob stood behind a ramp listening to them talk about Parker. Jacob didn’t like Parker in the least bit and he hardly knew the kid. But not only did Jamie obsess over Parker, he got a bad vibe from him. He didn’t really know why he cared about Jamie being obsessed over him, he might have gotten a little crush on her the second he walked into homeroom and saw her, but that didn’t mean that he should be jealous of someone that she’d liked forever.
“Why you hiding over here Jacob?” Chloe asked suddenly appearing next to him.
“I don’t know, I’m just thinking. And besides, Nicole and James were talking about Parker.”
“Really? Then do you mind if I stay here with you?”
“Well, I was just going to skate around.” Jacob said right before leaving Chloe to stand alone behind the ramp.
“Aw, Jake, you look lonely.” Jamie called circling him.
“Well, I am the only guy here, and besides, I didn’t want to hear you go on and on about Parker Scott.” Jacob snapped. Jamie skidded to a stop and watched Jacob skate away. She had not expected his quick change in temper.
They headed home as the sun began to set, Jacob and Jamie walked down their street in silence.
“Jamie?” Jacob asked quietly.
“Yeah?” Jamie looked at him curiously.
“I just wanted to let you know that I have a bad temper. I wasn’t really mad at you.” He gave Jamie a small grin. “See you tomorrow.” With that Jacob bounded up the walkway to his house. Jamie shook her head and continued down the street to her house. She ran to her room and flopped down on her bed and turned on her stereo, Glassjaw blasted out of the speakers. Jamie grinned and closed her eyes to think about the events of her first day of high school as a junior.
