"Where had the day gone," she thought to herself. It was days like this that made Kam glad to be alive; muggy with a light breeze. As her board hit the last wave of the day she knew that there weren't going to many waves left. Falling off her board into the salty ocean water, Kam let the wetness consume her, letting her bikini-clad body sink into the warm, safe, comfortable place inside her mind where only dreams and ambitions lay. She thought about her life so far, who was there, and more importantly, who wasn’t. She thought about her parents’ death and the leading frustration. She thought about all of this in only a split second before she realized that she was still underwater. Bobbing above the water she decided that a coconut lime smoothie was just what she needed.
Walking up to the tiki hut bejeweled with leis, old surfboards, and pictures of scantly clad girls, Kam heard the most familiar voice of all. It was the voice that she could pick out of a crowd of a thousand people, the deep, velvety, rich voice of her cousin, Myrnami.
"Hey you crazy bitch! What does the news from that fucked up place you call the mainland?"
"Nothing Myrnami, at least nothing that I care to talk about with you, you crazy dyke."
Laughing, Myrnami smiled, winked her beautiful almond shaped eyes, and handed over the smoothie that she knew Kam would have eventually ordered.
“Myrnami was always such a difficult child,” her mother would tell her friends when they would find time to discuss such trivial things as husbands and children.
It was true, Myrnami had always been something as a flirt, Kam remembered. Somehow, at the age of eleven, Myrnami already knew how to “make out” and proceeded to show all the boys.
“Come on, David it will be fun!” She would say.
Little did everyone know, Myrnami would turn out to be a hardcore lesbian, never looking at guys in a sexual way ever since that afternoon on the playground with poor David Kelsner. Now Dave was just a buddy, but back then, he wanted all of Myrnami he could get, which was too bad, seeing as how she never had a thing for guys.
Kam was never like that, she thought that boys were still gross, and had always thought of boys as being kickball friends, not boyfriends. Then she met him.
Logan.
