Short Story 1: A Blast From The Past

By Crimsondrop7

Yatsuko sat in her seat, waiting impatiently for the bell to ring that signaled lunch. 5 minutes passed and the bell finally rang. “Finally!” She shouted, throwing her hands up in the air and speeding out of the classroom. She grabbed the lunch out of her locker and ran up the stairs to the lunchroom. For the first few minutes, she gabbed and talked with her friends. The topic was very interesting, really. It was about Spirit Week, an important event at her school.

“Hey, that reminds me! You know, about the time when we were in seventh grade! With her t-shirt, remember?”

“Yeah!” Her friends agreed, “Tell us again!”

“Sure.” Yatsuko agreed. Her friends’ eyes glazed over as she began her story. Her eyes glinted an odd shine and a smile crept on her face.

The story takes place in a small middle school; this was in seventh grade. Yatsuko was in her seat, watching the game with anticipation. In order to receive the year t-shirt, she had to attend the first basketball game. Plus, it was a lot of fun, sitting there in the stands next to her friends, cheering her team on to victory, everyone getting loud and rowdy. The sixth graders were really loud, and they even had a cheering contest. Turns out, the eighth graders won, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit. It just made them cheer louder. In the end, her team won the game, thanks to the big crowd. That was how she received her shirt. Now, we skip further into the year, oh say, about December.

It was the day right before Christmas Vacation. At her school, they called this day, Holly Day. In the young teenager’s mind, this would be one of the best days she would experience in junior high school. In the morning, they have the Variety Show. This was when fellow pupils, can show their talents off to everyone. After the Variety Show, she went to one of her three choice activities. There was a wide choosing of things that you could do; volleyball, face painting, putting, manicures, baking, basketball, and so on.

Her first activity was baking cookies in the Home Economics Room. They smelled great! She packed the perfect cookies in a small container while munching on one, saving some for her friends. The bell rang and it was time to go to her next activity. Yatsuko’s next class was making friendship bracelets. She was happy about going to this activity because some of her close friends were in it as well. With a bounce in her step, Yatsuko hummed a little tune to herself as she walked to the Math Room; that’s where the activity was taking place. As Yatsuko skipped into the room, she smiled. She walked over to a seat in between Kaje and Usuko, two of her many close friends. They grabbed three strings of yarn and started to braid, listening to a Christmas song. Yatsuko was half way through braiding her first one when it popped out of the tape on the desk! She put it back under the tape, only to have it pop out again. She glared hard at the floppy string, willing it to spontaneously combust. It was just too stubborn. She gave up and settled for holding it in between her knees. Finally, the bell rang. In that time, Yatsuko was able to make three friendship bracelets, no thanks to the stubborn string that took about fifteen minutes to finish.

It was time for lunch now. Yatsuko quickly ran up the flight of stairs to her locker and hastily grabbed her lunch. Jumping down two flights of stairs, she made it into the lunchroom. She was the third person there. Flashing a 1,000-watt smile at the other two male students, the young teen took a seat at her normal table near the windows and waited for her friends to come. A few minutes later and the lunchroom was packed! Yatsuko was talking to Osaka and Jibun, only to turn around and say something to the person who threw a grape at her head. She saw Haki, Na-u, and Sanji snickering.

Yatsuko wagged her finger at them and turned around again to resume her conversation. She was met with the sight of Osaka laughing his head off and a red-faced Jibun standing up, out of her seat, yelling her head off at him. Jibun had a short temper, so Yatsuko tried to calm her down. She was starting to make a scene and Yatsuko didn’t want to draw attention to them or worse, get in trouble. Some people sitting around the group were already sending weird looks. Little did she know, that a few minutes later, something even worse would happen.

Jibun sat back down and started to squeeze her bought-from-school-in-a-carton-and-still-not-open, milk. Yatsuko watched her actions warily from the sidelines as Osaka kept on provoking Jibun. Her face got red, and more red, whether from embarrassment or anger, she couldn’t tell. In fact, it was a very good impression of a tomato. Finally, Jibun exploded. It seemed to happen in slow motion. She stood up from her seat and slammed her fist down, still holding the milk. The milk proceeded to fountain out the opening of the carton. Osaka and Yatsuko both wore surprised expressions and dove out of the way. Osaka was faster than Yatsuko, and was now, on the other side of the table wearing a victory smirk. Yatsuko glared daggers towards him when, something warm, jerked her attention from him.

It was the milk! She’d temporarily forgotten about it, until now. It was all over her hair and clothes, including her favorite spirit t-shirt. The lunchroom was deathly quiet. All gazes were on the two of them, silently waiting for one to make a move. Yatsuko was shocked and turned her murderous gaze on Jibun.

“Jibun!” She half whined, half screeched, “What were you thinking?” She jumped back from the table. Her face grew red with embarrassment and anger, as she stood there in the middle of the aisle, daring anyone to laugh.

Yatsuko heard a small snicker come form her table. It was Osaka, he was laughing silently. His body was shaking from the force of laughter and his face turning red. She knew he had a good sense of humor, but right now, his humor stunk. She narrowed her eyes in silent anger, daring him to continue his laughing. Not being able to contain his laughter, Osaka snorted quite disgustingly then, went to a full-out laugh. Yatsuko snorted at his actions and fell into smaller laughs. It must have been pretty funny. Seeing a seventh grade girl jump out of her table into the middle of the aisle, milk dripping down her hair and clothes, while trying to intimidate a boy sitting at her table who was laughing his head off. Soon enough, the entire lunchroom was laughing. Most of the people’s faces were red from laughing. Yatsuko was clutching her sides and having trouble breathing. The laughter died down finally, and the bell rang. The rest of the day proceeded as, watching a movie with her home base and another home base her third activity, and home.
