He Was Gone Before I Met Him

He was broken long before I found him.
He was gone before I came.
Nameless, tired, ever-suave,
A master of his craft.

His smirk—it held so many lies,
So easy to read.
But those eyes so coy, so cold, so dark…
Have deceived many.
Not myself—I had my time with him
Of my own accord
Despite his lies.

He was alive though he was dead,
Existent though his form was gone,
Strong though his life was over,
Soulless though his soul was bright.

He was gone before I found him.
Don’t believe me?—ask him yourself.
He was gone since she left him behind.
It wasn’t my fault.
I can’t be blamed.
I hurt him, but—
It was her fault.
His fault.

A stronger man would have
Lifted his head
And walked away.
A stronger man
—though none are stronger than my love—
Would not have been so hurt.

He was gone before I met him.

He had a daughter before I met him,
He had loss before I met him.
He had love before I met him.
He’s lost love many times before.

I loved him but I hurt him.
He hurt me, because—
He loved me too.
He changed for me, but—
It will never be enough.

Nothing will ever be enough for him.
…Nothing will ever be enough for me.
And that is why it’s perfect.
And that is why I had to leave.
So we could both wallow in our sorrow,
Forever awaiting the return
Of that special someone.
He—she—
Is never coming back.

And now he cries in his loss.
He comforts those I’ve left behind.
They comfort him, but it is never enough.
Not with my blue eyes now burned
Onto the surface of his mind forever.

Burned freshly
After many years.

He will die with that image in his head.

If he ever dies.
He may never die;
He may die tomorrow—don’t ask me.
I’m a psychic.
But Julian is unpredictable.

…He was broken long before I found him…
I swear.
