He Who is Not to be Named1

Unlock the portal to a vast abyss

found in the ancient tomes of cryptic words.

Seek and expand your mind, forsake the bliss

of the placid isle of ignorant herds.

The King in Yellow haunts eternally2

and fires the will to madness divine

to Promethean heights with cruel beauty3

sundering the bounds of the human mind

Come whisper my name under pale full moons

and learn forbidden secrets of darkness.

Summon me forth from deep watery dunes

and utter the unspeakable promise.

You’ve now departed the realm of the sane,

bound thyself to me. Hastur is my name.

1 He Who is Not to be Named is not a Harry Potter reference but a reference to Hastur the Unspeakable. It is an entity found in the mythos created by H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), an auther of what later came to be known as ‘cosmic horror’ fiction. Lovecraft is often compared to Poe

2 The King in Yellow is a fictional play of the Lovecraft mythos said to inspire a creative madness in its readers. The King in Yellow is also said to be an avatar of Hastur the Unspeakable.

3 Promethean: Definition: Boldly creative. Prometheus in ancient Greek mythos was a Titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mortals to use.
